They are only going to upgrade the connector. Its not the end of the world. They will most likely say "oh yeah and the 3rd gen iPad will now ship with the new lightening connector" when talking about the connector on the iPad mini.

Woo Hoo! It All Came True!![]()
Are we expecting another new one spring next year then or will it be this time next year now?
Thanks for the English lesson! I do know the difference between obsolete and superseded thanks to my college education. Simple definition: no longer in use or a kind of style no longer current. I think by today's announcement, the 7 month old iPad is now obsolete!! Will it still work? YES. Do existing apps still run, YES. That's beside the point!

This time next year - they reset the refresh cycle. From now on iPads will be released before Christmas, in order to capitalise on the holiday season demand (with a new product offering, not on that's 7 months old and just about to be refreshed). It's a great move, actually.
The iPad 3 is not even close to being "obsolete", just like the iPad 2 and even iPad 1 are not obsolete. They are still, IN USE by well, 100 million people, and are still supported by Apple.
I'm hoping Apple will upgrade to the A6(X?) + IGZO + keep the huge battery. A flash storage bump for everyone would be cool too. But that's probably a lot of wishful thinking =P
Successfully returned my ipad 3 and placed my order for the refurb version. $135 back in my pocket. I feel better about the situation. No matter what everyone else says apple screwed us all and has broken our trust. There was no need to release a new ipad this early. Its the principal behind it not the fact that the ipad 3 is obsolete. Why make a new model? ipad mini, ipad2 and ipad 3 just weren't enough? Apple is getting really greedy Only thing about this decision that makes sense is that its just before the holiday season so that they can capitalize on it. Why isnt the ipad 4 thinner or lighter if it has the lightning connector? What will apple do with all the unsold ipad 3's? Their gonna sell them as refurbs and loose money. Doesn't make much sense to me. Not to mention confusing the customer even more with the ipad 2, the ipad 3, the ipad 4 and ipad mini. How do we know apple wont do this again with yet another product? Release a new ipad in march or release a new iphone before september.
What?
I'm getting mine replaced by a unit with Lightning, 2x speed, faster WiFi. That, versus a refurbished unit lacking those for $135? No, no thank you.
Thats your choice. I am not implying that everyone do what i did. The choice i made made sense for me. Every one has the right and choice to do whatever they like including me. I was merely sharing my decision with others. If you choose to buy a refreshed ipad which is lacking many features than thats your prerogative. Just don't force others to do the same as you. Or put others down if they dont share your same thoughts. Buying the ipad 4 will only encourage apple to keep doing this.
Again, what are you talking about?
I already BOUGHT the iPad 3. Apple is letting me return it within 30 days, so I get the iPad 4 instead.
The hilarity is that no one else in the world would let you do such a thing outside their stated return period. And yet, we get people whining about it and ending up with a refurb unit.
Hilarious.
I wouldn't be too upset. It's only a minor update, it's still the third generation device, it won't have any advantages in terms of software. Also, the fact that they update products doesn't change your device at all, so it's illogical to care if they update it or not.
The 30 day return is not a company wide policy. The nearest apple store to me is an hour drive there and an hour back, i called them up, they are not offering the exchange. Yeah, i'm going to whine when I payed $800 for a device that is now out-of-date after 18 days of owning it.
