If you're really upset about the new iPad, sell yours and buy it. The value of the 3rd gen is not going to be heavily impacted, iPad 2's still sell at the same price they did this time yesterday. The reality is, the new iPad isn't worth upgrading to and the 3rd gen looks exactly like a 4th gen with a different connector. It's a tiny little refresh.

I've decided to return my iPad 3 for a refurb iPad 3 or if apple will give a price adjustment. I don't think the iPad 4 is worthy upgrade for me. Me getting some money back in my pocket is the only way I can recover from apple releasing a newer iPad in such a short period of time. Apple has become like every other manufacturer. Before you could depend on apple to wait a year until a refreshed model was released. If apple made more improvements to this new model I wouldn't have minded so much.

Are we expecting another new one spring next year then or will it be this time next year now?

Wow. Are we Apple Devotees or are we really little children who can never be satisfied? Seriously, the new iPad is just a modest upgrade from the 3rd Gen iPad. And I'm sure the upgrade is partly, if not mostly, in response to the release of the new Microsift based tablet. Apple is just doing what it has to do to stay competitive. It's not like the upgrade is night and day from the 3rd Gen. It's not like Apple repeated the mistake it made when it dropped the price of the original iPhone 2 months after it was released. Threads like this make Samsung's commercials poking fun at iPhone owners look acurate. So sad.

This time next year - they reset the refresh cycle. From now on iPads will be released before Christmas, in order to capitalise on the holiday season demand (with a new product offering, not on that's 7 months old and just about to be refreshed). It's a great move, actually.

Thanks for the English lesson! I do know the difference between obsolete and superseded thanks to my college education. Simple definition: no longer in use or a kind of style no longer current. I think by today's announcement, the 7 month old iPad is now obsolete!! Will it still work? YES. Do existing apps still run, YES. That's beside the point!

"My college education"

Hope you kept the receipt, that's all I can say.

Wow, guess college wasn't even enough? You should have learned the difference between the two in High School.

The iPad 3 is not even close to being "obsolete", just like the iPad 2 and even iPad 1 are not obsolete. They are still, IN USE by well, 100 million people, and are still supported by Apple.

Obsolete products are SD TVs that don't receive digital broadcasts, CRT monitors that are literally failing through their lifespan, and floppy drives that are unsupported by virtually anybody.

Exactly my thought. Even though I'm a bit pissed since I planned on buying a refreshed iPad in March I totally understand why they did this.

Instead I'll be buying one in January.

Obsolete means no longer supported by Apple, not no longer in use. I can use a Newton PDA or G3 iBook but those would be considered obsolete. The iPad 1 is arguably obsolete as it's no longer supported by Apple with OS updates. The iPad 3 won't be obsolete until it stops receiving OS updates, which means not until OS9.

I'm hoping Apple will upgrade to the A6(X?) + IGZO + keep the huge battery. A flash storage bump for everyone would be cool too. But that's probably a lot of wishful thinking =P

Judging by the dimensions, we did indeed get the huge battery. And A6X.

Please Apple let it be IGZO!

Successfully returned my ipad 3 and placed my order for the refurb version. $135 back in my pocket. I feel better about the situation. No matter what everyone else says apple screwed us all and has broken our trust. There was no need to release a new ipad this early. Its the principal behind it not the fact that the ipad 3 is obsolete. Why make a new model? ipad mini, ipad2 and ipad 3 just weren't enough? Apple is getting really greedy Only thing about this decision that makes sense is that its just before the holiday season so that they can capitalize on it. Why isnt the ipad 4 thinner or lighter if it has the lightning connector? What will apple do with all the unsold ipad 3's? Their gonna sell them as refurbs and loose money. Doesn't make much sense to me. Not to mention confusing the customer even more with the ipad 2, the ipad 3, the ipad 4 and ipad mini. How do we know apple wont do this again with yet another product? Release a new ipad in march or release a new iphone before september.

What?

I'm getting mine replaced by a unit with Lightning, 2x speed, faster WiFi. That, versus a refurbished unit lacking those for $135? No, no thank you.

Thats your choice. I am not implying that everyone do what i did. The choice i made made sense for me. Every one has the right and choice to do whatever they like including me. I was merely sharing my decision with others. If you choose to buy a refreshed ipad which is lacking many features than thats your prerogative. Just don't force others to do the same as you. Or put others down if they dont share your same thoughts. Buying the ipad 4 will only encourage apple to keep doing this.

Again, what are you talking about?

I already BOUGHT the iPad 3. Apple is letting me return it within 30 days, so I get the iPad 4 instead.

The hilarity is that no one else in the world would let you do such a thing outside their stated return period. And yet, we get people whining about it and ending up with a refurb unit.

Hilarious.

The 30 day return is not a company wide policy. The nearest apple store to me is an hour drive there and an hour back, i called them up, they are not offering the exchange. Yeah, i'm going to whine when I payed $800 for a device that is now out-of-date after 18 days of owning it.

I wouldn't be too upset. It's only a minor update, it's still the third generation device, it won't have any advantages in terms of software. Also, the fact that they update products doesn't change your device at all, so it's illogical to care if they update it or not.

then why is it that "new ipad" (3rd gen) is not even listed on apple's site??? so virtually, there is no support for ipad 3... they just wiped it... I am surprised they haven't come up with an explanation regarding this.

Maybe our iPad 3's could develop an intermittent fault such as randomly shutting down;). Surely they don't repair them, just swap them for a new one?
Although I'm guessing they run a diagnostic and check their logs at the Genius Bar and I'm sure they've got plenty of iPad3's they can use to swap them over with. Oh we'll, just a devious thought - go on I bet others have had the same one?

I'd give apple a call and see what can be done.

If that were me, I would not be happy

Call AppleCare and escalate, at worse, they WiLL return it through the mail.

Good for you. You will have the best ipad on the market until march. When apple releases another lighter, thinner, faster one. Since you are so rich you can afford to upgrade ipads every 6 months. Times are tough I dont know what planet your living on. There is a global recession and apple products are expensive. Apple refurbs are just as good as new with an apple warranty and new battery. As I said before what I do with my money is my choice it has nothing to do with your ignorant and pretentious ways. If you want to buy new iPad every 6 months thats up to you. Your the one with yacht and private jet. Maybe you can buy us all new iPad 4's then lol.
