Glad to hear another good iPad story. We need mor of those here. Do you mind checking the production week for us?

Friend, you keep trying to pin down what makes a good screen. What week number? What city? Which store? What serial code?

True, some people got decent screens with a DY serial, but increasingly, many did not. And by the accounts of those who have problem free screens, who have nothing in common in terms of serial, city, store, week number, etc., it all comes down to the same thing we've been saying all along...luck of the draw.

By continuing to investigate every possible variable, you are only setting yourself up for disappointment. Even if you arm yourself to the teeth with anecdotes that point to a specific iPad to buy, the odds of you finding that exact iPad, or even getting Apple to let you choose which one you get, are slim to none.

Your best bet is to either dive in and get an iPad, then deal with exchanges or returns if it's not to your satisfaction, or just wait, until maybe Apple changes something on the production line, be it process or supplier. Trying to buy your iPad by deduction is clearly an exercise in wheel spinning.

You're completely right... I guess I just started getting frustrated. I'm already on my 6th. All I want is a decent screen... :( thanks for the slap in the face tho I did need it. :D

Probably a dumb question, but how would anyone know if Apple fixed this problem? My friend gave up after the 6th iPad from 6 different Apple stores.

Whether the rumors of Samsung being the only panel provider are true or not.....there's not much you can do other than keep trying or wait.

After returning many...I've decided to wait. Right now to me even the uniform screens are awkward. The color shifting at angles are really narrow compared to the iPad 2. Even though the colors of the new iPad are supposed to be more accurate....I found my best panel still had a green tint to it.

I'm hoping that maybe all these are Samsung panels....and a few months in we start getting more reports of better screens, maybe from LG or Sharp?

In the end....you will probably not know. You'll have to buy and see for yourself.

Thank you....I will pass that along to my friend.

if they do address the issues, which they very well may not if the returns are within acceptable levels, then you will start to see a gradual decrease in the level of complaints here, followed by people who previously had issues discussing their new "post problems" version.

Have gone through about 5 new ipads, and this time I got a DY. Screen is definitely the best I've had yet! If we are being really picky, there is a small amount of backlight bleed when looking at a black screen with full brightness, but even this is minimal compared to past screens. Color is as close to uniform as I've had yet. Definitely keeping this one!

Just received mine today, perfect screen, For some reason the serial number checker doesn't say which week it was built.

Week 15

I have a week 15 DY. it has it yellow/green in the upper left and pink in the Bottom right. I set up an appointment at an apple store for Friday. Is it really true that they are only allowing a single swap now? What if I end up with one just as bad or worse :(

Update : Mine is dy 15 and it's a good screen but I have noticed a very slight pink tint at certain angles and from the button side of screen covering around 10%. But neither is enough this time to make me want to change.

Unless its truly obvious and bothersome I think you have to accept it or get a refund and wait for iPad 4.

Perfect Screen for me (2second Exchange)

Really minimal Bleeding and it get less every Day and the Screen is also white and nö yeloow

DY week 14 for me after many attempts around launch. Dust under the screen and some blue tinging. I really give up now. No iPad 3 for me. Apple's shocking build quality may well be the start of the decline I'm afraid. What a shame. I loved my iPad 2 - and really sorry I sold it now.

Bought a DY serial no. 64GB Wifi in India on 27th Apr launch here and it had significant pink & blue tint which was very much evident on the white screen (especially on the bottom left corner).

This was the only piece available in the shop (even in the morning of the launch date) and it proves that the defects are not serial no. bound but mostly due to bad QC.

Just gave it for replacement. If not best, hope to get at least an average one with least pinkish/bluish tint.

Yes in general, overall speaking DY units are all with good quality screens I have come across atleast 5 different units all with serial numbers made in Factory DY and jolly good screens . I just wanted to know one more thing here. I am planning to buy one moreunit and just wanted to tread cautiously and so I asked the store guy to give me the serial number of the unit which was only left with him, which I likely will purchase here is the screenshot of that

Serial Number: DYXXXXXXXXXXXX
Name:iPad 3
Group1:iPad
Group2:WiFi-4G
Generation:3
Machine Model:iPad 3,2
Model Introduced:2012
Production Year:2012
Production week:15 (April)
Introduced Test:GOED
CPU Speed: 1.04 GHz
Family Name: A1430
Screen Size: 9 inch
Screen Resolution: 20438x1536 pixels
Colour: Black
Capacity: 64 GB
Factory: DY

Now I am planning to go ahead with the purchase, but I am getting what this family name A1430 is ? Of all the other DY Units that I have seen in the store in display though they mention 15 DY But none of them have a family name and a number against that. My guess was all 15 DY had good colours no yellow snow whites but now this looks like an exception as it has a family name with a number against it? Should I be worrying about it or what should really matter is it should be DY and nothing else to worry about...So what could be this family name, This looks one is the only unique one which has a family name, none of the others in the display of the store had it when I fired the query. So I was getting a little skeptical should I go ahead and buy this one or what?

Please help me with a quick response, as the store guy has told me this is the last one he has then I will have to wait till new stock arrives and who knows then will I get DY Unit or not ?

So I am planning to buy it today evening only.

Thanks in Advance

As my DY unit has the same pink tint issue, I would suggest you to be cautious and not to go on serial no.'s per se (May be I was unlucky to have the single faulty DY series device). But the best way is to test the device then and there in the store before leaving, to be absolutely sure.

Just been through 3 DY models.

1st one had perfect white screen but lots of dust under screen.

2nd one had dust under screen, (didn't check the colours).

3rd one, that I have took home has pink screen under natural daylight, backlight bleed in one corner, but no dust or dead pixels.

Am gonna play with this one for a few days and see how I get on.

The screen doesn't seem as sharp as the 1st one either. (maybe i'm imagining it?).

totally possible. sharpness and contrast levels are not consistent from unit to unit, especially if it exhibits other issues.

I must admit after using it for the last two hours, all of my concerns are drifting away. Am loving the punchy colours and sharper text. The only thing that concerns me is that the screen seems to turn pink when I move into natural daylight, but seeing as I use my iPad mainly indoors, I'm not that bothered now.

I also have to say that I have no heat problems or wifi signal problems that others have said about. I don't think I will risk changing it out for another one. Knowing my luck I will get one with dead pixels or more dust under the screen lol.

Ok, it turns out my DY screen isn't as perfect as I thought it was. When I'm reading a pdf in a dark room at 80-85% brightness I can see that one half of the screen has a pink tint. If I turn it around it changes sides, so it's not the viewing angle.
The websites and other stuff look ok, but it really bugs me when I'm reading pdfs and since this is the main reason I bought the device for I'm not happy.

The problem is, even though I bought it 5 days ago, I can't return it for a refund as I bought it from a shop with no such return policies. I could take it back and then they might send it to the country's Apple service (there are no direct Apple shops here). The question is, would Apple service even do anything about it? Seeing as some of the posters here got their yellow screens returned and the tint isn't that obvious when you look at it during the day.

I have a "DY" iPad and the right half of the screen is very yellow. It's almost impossible not to notice - everyone I've shown it to, sans one person, noticed it right away. The one who didn't could easily see it after I told him. It's going back early next week. Hopefully I don't get one that's worse!

I swapped my "DY" today at an Apple retail store (they were great about it!) and got a "DM"/week 16 model that, so far as I could tell with a quick inspection is perfect. It is at least a fairly uniform color across the screen, can't say for sure if it has a tint to the whole panel or not. I'm a bit color blind so it may have a green or red/pink cast that I can't see but I am a happy camper at the moment.

Congrats, now close your eyes and enjoy it:p

Hah, I wish. I've had some time a home with it now and it actually does have a bit of a yellow tint on the left side. It's not nearly as obvious as the last one and a much smaller portion of the screen. I did t notice at all at first, but it's there. Not sure what I am going to do now. I don't love near an apple store (closest ones are an hour east or west of me) so I don't want to drive back again. I might just live with it - it's not nearly as obvious as the last one. We'll see I guess. The big test will be reading with it. The last one would make my eyes feel funny because of the difference in color from side to side.
