yes the defects may seem minute defects. I can accept 1 or 2 minute defects but these seem to be all over the phone - at the top on/off button, at the bottom speaker, most terrible at the home buttom where there are 2 defects, and lastly at both the front screen and back cover.

considering the price I paid for this phone (this is the most expensive phone i've ever purchased with my hard-earned money), this is not acceptable to me

my "some point when i'll need a different phone" is 2 years down the road when my newly signed contract with telco finished. I can't afford to get a no-contract phone.

the frustrating thing is I can't get a new set in exchange from my telco since it has a strict refurbished-set-for-exchange-only policy, regardless of whatever software or hardware problems the phone has, even if the phone is only 1 day old.

I have had refurbs in the past and they look fine. I'm not talking about just getting a brand new phone.. But that at some point in the warranty period something will likely go wrong and I'll end up with a different one anyway. I just can't fathom stressing a out scratches on the metal band. You could return it tomorrow and get one that has some other more major issue.. Then have to get another... Just doesn't seem worth it.

holy crap OP! If you are this anal/OCD/perfectionist you should NOT own expensive toys! You will never be happy with them. You know that you can buy a $90,000 Corvette and it will get rock chips on the body? You can buy a phone and get earwax stuck in the speakerhole.

I'm sure your phone works just the same as one without those insanely miniscule scratches as you have. Maybe my post could have been summarized into, "Oh, the stupid 1st world problems we have " but i wanted to emphasize how illogical and useless it is to get bent out of shape concerning something none of us can be 100% protected from: accidents/scratches/human error.

Take a deep breath, realize what you hold in your hand would be an object (being a smartphone, not specifically the iphone :) seemingly worthy of worship to billions of people born in the generations before us and be happy, not sad :)

Yes, it does, too. But the Corning page also says this:

Corning® Gorilla® Glass is used by more than 30 major brands, has been designed into more than 500 product models, and is featured on more than 400 million devices worldwide. Due to customer agreements, we cannot identify all devices that feature Gorilla Glass. (Emphasis added) Your favorite device may include Gorilla Glass, even if you don’t see it listed. Ask your manufacturer or retailer to learn more.

You should just call Apple direct, they'll sort you out.

That's unacceptable. You shouldn't have to settle for anything less than a pristine brand new phone after spending so much on it.

Take it back and get a replacement. Since the phone has been out less than a month, even a "refurbished" phone would be essentially new. Make sure you inspect it for any defects in the store.

But yes, don't listen to anyone who tells you you should settle because normal use would lead to small scratches etc... Take it back.

I have no doubt that they would replace this at an Apple Store no questions asked.

the new iPhone 4S which i bought has numerous cosmetic defects. Fortunately all the hardware is working well currently. Am I too fussy? but hey, this is the first phone which I own that has so many cosmetic defects, even on the supposedly scratch-resistant gorilla glass, so how did the scratches come about? I'm not able to get a new set for exchange as the telco in my country only provides refurbished set for exchange, strictly no new set for exchange.

(1) tiny scratches on on/off button (see 2 photos below)
(2) long deep scratch on home button and a slight chip on home button (see photo below)
(3) tiny scratch on steel frame at corner of speaker near to screw.
(4) Scratch on glass back cover. No photo as I'm unable to capture it despite trying various angles and different lighting) More visible under my yellow light Ikea work lamp and less visible under normal daylight or florescent light.
(5) Scratch on gorilla glass on front screen (at the white portion near home button). No photo as I'm unable to capture it despite trying various angles and different lighting). Scratch is more visible under my yellow light Ikea work lamp and less visible under normal daylight or florescent light.

I love these posts from new people, not that they may not have some validity- paid by the post ?

That new car will probably get into an accident someday too. Maybe we should pay dealers to smash it up a bit to get it over it so we can relax.

You're missing the entire point of the post. The point is to enjoy things for the PURPOSE they are meant to serve. A Corvette's MAIN purpose is to give the driver the thrill of driving (speed/handling/braking). It is also there to look good, but it's main purpose is the thrill.

A smartphone's MAIN purpose is to be....wait for it....a SMARTPHONE. Something that can do almost ANYTHING for us. A SECONDARY consideration is that it looks good.

Sure, if the OP wants to buy things just to look at them, he should make sure they LOOK GOOD all the time. He needs to put these objects in a vacuum sealed airtight display case.

But to buy a smartphone and complain about MINISCULE (admitted by the OP) scratches is illogical.

Just trying to insert LOGIC in here but i guess if someone sees a phone's primary function as something to look good, then there will be no logic.

And yes, you can have both, but if you don't happen to get a cosmetically perfect iphone, YOU HAVE LOST NOTHING! Your phone still is able to complete it's primary purpose 100% perfectly (just the same as the cosmetically perfect iphone).

If it came like that out of the box and it bugs you go to an apple store or dealer and see what they can do. I am OCD about scratches and stuff also so if everyday it gets to you, just take it back. Apple will refurb it and someone will get a perfectly functioning phone and be happy. I always hope I get refurbs that were cosmetic haha. Don't get bummed out by all the flamers, it doesn't get thrown in the trash. It will still be put to use. So if they let you do it...why the hell not. If a car dealer was willing to let me trade in my car for rock chips...hell yeah I would do it...and so would just about anyone else. :)

why is it that people act like this with iPhone's?

back in the day, people wouldn't be this bad with their brick phones. they were just happy they had a phone.

and don't give me the "he paid a lot for this phone" cause those brick phones costed more than the iPhone.

OP, you're going to get more (small) scratches on the phone probably within a few days of carrying it around.

You are extremely laughable.

OP: Here is your easy solution.

Buy a case, it should cover those scratches. Problem solved.
Buy a screen protector (Anti-glare type), it is cover your scratches on your screen and you won't see it. Problem solved.
also get a back protector to cover the screen. Problem solved.
As for your home button get a home button film and put it over it. Problem solved.

Really? So you find it perfectly acceptable for companies to sell you cosmetically defective products as new?

If the OP bought a B grade product then yes it would be, but no way in hell is it acceptable for any company, and in particular a company the calibre of Apple to sell new products with cosmetic defects.

Apple's mission is to make a profit. Most people do not scrutinize their devices like some of the OCD users in this forum. The iPhone is pocket change in the consumer electronics field. Some of you look at your iPhone as your GOD!

Then I realize that the average age of the forum members, here, is likely 15 or 16 years old.

Great another one for the mediocrity pile.

It is amazing. Buying used is one thing but something brand new in a box should not look like that. Is it the end of the world? Of course not but that is up to the buyer.

going crazy about cosmetic defects when the phone can still accomplish all of it's 32456234564 tasks 100% as well as a cosmetically perfect phone is the definition of insanity.

trying to bring reason and logic to people like the OP and itsmemuffins is probably a close second....

Not sure if just trolling or…

I would certainly take it back if there are manufacturing defects on the phone. If you are paying $200+ for a new phone, it should be in mint condition with no scratches or scuffs!

just like I said before in another thread, you paid for a phone...without scratches. Return it.

Just like new clothes do not have stains and holes, new shoes do not have scruffs or scratches

A new 250$-1000$ phone should not have scratches either.

Ignore the "first world problems" people on here. They say that to almost every post.
