As a photo retoucher by trade, paid to notice the most minute flaws, and a wristwatch collector, equally obessesed with tiny details, I feel categorically within my right to say the OP is being a little ridiculous. As someone else mentioned, take an equally close look at your car your TV your WHATEVER device you will see as many if not far more flaws.
Why is the iPhone supposed to hold up to jewelry standards? It's a TELEPHONE.

I especially like this comment you made: "I haven't yet. I'm wondering if I should wait to do it just before the warranty runs out."

I couldnt agree with you more like i previously stated. people have ridiculous expectations, its like they physically have to complain to a forum about minor flaws on something they have no control over. if the phone still works but you have manufacture set minor dents, scratches, scuffs, etc. Seriously I have a life far more stressful than to care about minor things of this nature.
Habitual riiiiiight.

Looks like there are two camps.
Those who expect to get what they pay for and get it in a new condition, not used.
And those who are willing to pay top Dollar for a new product but are willing to settle for a used product.
there are no sides, just people who are nit-picky and people who know what they are buying isnt always perfect.
everyone has to understand mass production at least I do, but then again I've worked in the field. Not every phone is going to be perfect when its mass produced but if people want to whine just take the phone back and get a different one.
OP isn't being not picky when his phone is full of scratches.
It happens instead of incessantly whining about it, he could of easily spent his wasted effort and time doing something about it. I.E. exchanging it for a new one that isnt "Scratched up, Dented, and Damaged".

Scratches are just one imperfection. Sharp, poorly finished edges, injection molding remnants, misaligned parts, uneven seams, etc these are all things you will find on EVERY mass produced product if you look closely enough.
The fact is, people hold Apple, and the iPhone in particular, to a ridiculously high standard a standard they don't hold over their cars, TVs, stereos, other cell phones, etc. If people held ALL their belongings to the same standard, the economy would collapse, because of all the store returns and exchanges.
The reason people obsess over the iPhone is because it's a trendy badge of entitlement, and entitlement is the new social disease.

Who cares, it's just a phone.
