Mine has a fingerprint on the screen... I'm so totally taking it into an Apple store later today. F THIS S!!!

yes the defects may seem minute defects. I can accept 1 or 2 minute defects but these seem to be all over the phone - at the top on/off button, at the bottom speaker, most terrible at the home buttom where there are 2 defects, and lastly at both the front screen and back cover.

considering the price I paid for this phone (this is the most expensive phone i've ever purchased with my hard-earned money), this is not acceptable to me

Then get it replaced? Coming here and throwing a hissy fit about apple QC isn't gonna help you in any way.

just like I said before in another thread, you paid for a phone...without scratches. Return it.

Just like new clothes do not have stains and holes, new shoes do not have scruffs or scratches

A new 250$-1000$ phone should not have scratches either.

Ignore the "first world problems" people on here. They say that to almost every post.

Agreed.

I have similar (not as bad) problems with mine, OP. I got it yesterday, and plan on taking it in tomorrow for a refund (exchange if they have any in-stock). Didn't fork out £499 for a phone with scratches - even if they are small.

well

well relax... I have some very very small ones on my steel band. Well everything else is working perfect so I guess I will just stick to it...

I would say the scratches on the band are too minuscule to worry about, but if the scratches on the front and back are like the one on the home button, I would take mine back. Like others have, said I know it's going to get scratched up eventually anyway, just because of my lifestyle, but I would want my brand new phone to have scratches on the glass when I bought it. My iP4 has last me since almost launch day, going through numerous field drills, pre mobilization trainings, and now Afghanistan without scratches on actual viewing area of the front glass, thanks to cases of course. The same can't be said for the back of the phone where I set it down most of the time when it's not in a case.

The more people return the tighter Apple will clamp down on QC. ;)

The more Apple will clamp down on stupid returns hopefully. It is costly and we all end up paying for it in the long run.
Their stuff is not built in a vacuum by robots, it's going to have some imperfections.

I watched some lady in an Apple store return 3 iMac for some very small scuffs on the stand. It was ridiculous. I would have gladly taken any of them.

Refurbed stuff is great, so what it has a scratch or scuff. It will get many more over the course of time.
I say lighten up on the OCD, stop killing yourself with anal retentive behavior and just move on.

You have o idea what you are talking about. A company that starts getting a lot of returns doesn't turn on the customer, they turn to the source and clamp down on it. ;)

I can sympathise here as I purchased a wired keyboard for my Macbook Pro and when I put it on my desktop I noticed very distinct blemishes around the cursor keys. I took it back to the Apple store and one staff member told me the aluminium finish is prone to blemishes and it's a factory fault!! He let me have a replacement but said I would not get another if the replacement has blemishes. Guess what, the replacement has blemishes and although not quite as noticeable as the last one, it annoys me that products like this are allowed to be sold, especially at the prices they're sold for!

To those '1st world problem' posts (well, all the negative ones), stop it with your '1st world moaning!' Why do you care so much to spend the time responding so passionately when you could put that energy into doing something far more constructive, like going out and meeting people for example.

I just read this and it made me laugh.

You get this absurdity.

Flaws people, there are flaws in things, nothing is perfect. There are flaws in nature; apples have flaws, oranges have flaws, but when people go to the store they want everything to be perfect and they will rifle through 30 oranges to get one without flaws.
Well guess what? Nothing is perfect, you are not perfect, the aluminum cases are not perfect and oranges are not perfect.

Just get over it, OMG!

Your kids left ear might be lower than his right, your left foot is longer than your right.

Your comment is just absurd.

If you are paying top Dollar you want top quality, end of. No flaw is acceptable at the price point Apple charges.

I buy my iPhones sim free so pay premium prices for them.

In the uk I paid £504 for the iPhone 4 and the 4s is £499.

My point is when I'm the first owner it's not unreasonable to expect the handset to be unmarked. Any wear and tear upon using it is then down to me.

Sorry, aside from the chip on the home button (which is worth getting replaced for if the phone came that way), I don't see anything else that is going to be an issue.

After a month of use your phone will have more scratches on it unless you put a heavy duty case on it, and even than the case itself could cause scratches on the phone.

Get the phone replaced for the chip in the home button, than go home and enjoy it.

As far as the whole blemish thing goes, If I paid big bucks for something and and it had scratches on it out of the box Id be pissed...Thats poor QC.

I agree with the user above me. My phone was flawless right out of the box.

Then the genius chipped some of the white border that is around the screen trying to get my case off with his nails.

Since I did not have any wiggly home button, no scratches anywhere else and no yellow/green tinted screen, I just accepted it and moved on.

If you buy something cheap and something is wrong with it. People say, You get what you pay for.

Is that the same case with HQ Top of the line Apple products?

2 Faced Fools!

Are you serious?

holy crap OP! If you are this anal/OCD/perfectionist you should NOT own expensive toys! You will never be happy with them. You know that you can buy a $90,000 Corvette and it will get rock chips on the body? You can buy a phone and get earwax stuck in the speakerhole.

I'm sure your phone works just the same as one without those insanely miniscule scratches as you have. Instead of worrying about COSMETIC blemishes why can't you just be THANKFUL for incredible FUNCTIONALITY and the GENIUS of a 4 inch tall object that can tell you the weather/search for the nearest Thai restaurant/see the latest pictures from your halloween party posted by your friends/play a first person shooter/shoot amazing pictures and video/check your online savings account balances/be a calculator/be a level/show you the time in London/write a text message/write an email/read a magazine/check your 11 calendars/make appointments/remind you of birthdays/keep your grocery list/watch an episode of Lost on Netflix/show you the bad storm on LIVE radar/keep your 873 contacts phone numbers, addresses, emails, anniversaries, job descriptions/purchase any item you want through amazon,newegg,bestbuy,ebay,etc/remind you of great Groupon deals/learn Spanish through an app/tell you what's playing at any theatre for any price and watch any trailer, see the cast, read the summary/know what's on tv/track your fantasy football/find out the score of the Steelers game last night/read a book to you/browse the 234523652356 pages of the internet....

I mean COMONNNNNNNNNNNNN!!!!

Maybe my post could have been summarized into, "Oh, the stupid 1st world problems we have " but i wanted to emphasize how illogical and useless it is to get bent out of shape concerning something none of us can be 100% protected from: accidents/scratches/human error.

Take a deep breath, realize what you hold in your hand would be an object (being a smartphone, not specifically the iphone :) seemingly worthy of worship to billions of people born in the generations before us and be happy, not sad :)

Are you serious? This person bought something new and actually expected it to look like it was new. How unreasonable! Are you suggesting that he should just be thankful that Apple was gracious enough to give him the opportunity to spend his hard earned money on their GOD-LIKE product and that he should just shut up and take what he gets? Things like these defects may not bother you and that's fine. They do bother some people and it would bother me if it was mine. Maybe you should step back and take a look in the mirror. You are berating this person for having the audacity of expecting a new product to look new and you find his expectation to be unacceptable to you. Can you also see how intolerant you are of someone who has different expectations than you do? Do you really think you would be OK buying a "$90,000 Corvett" that came from the factory with rock chips? I'm willing to bet if this had been someone posting here who just bought a new Samsung Galaxy SII that you would have been all over Samsung for their lack of quality control.

My suggestion to the OP would be to take it back and tell the store that they can either give you a new one or a refund. My guess it they will choose to give you a new one rather than lose a customer. Best of luck!

Go buy a brand new car and inspect it like you do your Apple product.
You will find many more blemishes, flaws and over tolerances.
Yet, you drive away with something that costs 200 times more than the iPhone and you don't put up a tenth of the stand.

Your expectations for a "flawless" product are simply irrational and unreasonable.

Get your phone and go home people and the first 3 times you shove it in your pocket, throw it in your purse or drop it, it's going to look like it does.
What's the difference? Because you did it?

I have nothing to substantiate this, but I'm willing to bet that the stores in other countries don't have the amount of anal returners like the stores in the US.

I'm with the crowd who thinks this is more than a little ridiculous. The supposed "defects" are so tiny as to be immaterial, and really there's no guarantee that they weren't created while the phone was in use.

And it's a phone, not an objet d'art! So get over it ... it's still just as useful as ever, anyway. And honestly, even with a couple of microscopic nicks it's just as handsome, too.

So what if you just went out and ordered a car, say a lexus and it was delivered to the dealer with scratches on the dashboard, paint or whatever...Dont know about you but Id be pissed

Sorry, but at this price point every phone should be close to being identical, and they should arrive blemish free as mine did.

Believe me, if you went down to your local Lexus dealer, found the very best car on the lot, and went over it with whatever magnifying glass the OP apparently used ... you'd be horrified.

Lots of people just like to be angry, though, and I suppose that's their prerogative.

Finally, a reasonable thinking person with some sense.

Incidentally, I was looking at car portable GPS units, they go for around $350 and in my curiosity, I opened one up and went over it. Just as I thought, imperfections, flaws, over tolerances, etc. etc., blah, blah, blah.
I picture some of the posters lined up at Costco going through 25 boxes of the Nuvi GPS unit, just to find the perfect one and waiting until they hear the chorus sings "Hallelujah"

It reminds me of people ripping open ears of corn and then throwing them back in the pile because they weren't perfect, a couple kernels were out of place. Then I come along wanting some corn and I have to get the toss me outs.
