I just got the tape measure out and saw just how much bigger half an inch is!!:eek::eek::eek:

ummm... wow. they used to teach that stuff in 2nd grade.... :)

Oh, sorry I cannot completely accurately measure half an inch with just my eyes, no measuring tool in use at all. I'm so happy you possess this apparent super power, can you fly too? And you also took me out of context, I was referring to the size half an inch adds to the iPhone 4!

No .5 would be five tenths of an inch. ;)

.5 is usually a half, yes.

I work in centimetres and millimetres haha. In the UK tape measures are set in 1/8th markings. But yeah it is half an inch. Pitty.

The antenna problem was overblown...

I don't disagree at all, but perception is reality for consumers. My guess is that they feel they need to change the design so that they can say they have fixed the issues and restore faith in their engineering abilities.

I have heard rumors that the updated iPod touches will have 3G. If this is true I would assume a complete redesign to accommodate the 3G chips.

Based on the white iPod touch screens/bezels we saw a day or two ago there won't be any redesign. Apple has no competition for the iPod touch; only the iPhone, and iPad. An iPod touch with 3G equals an iPhone.

If this is correct, I assume Apple have increase the screen size by 0.2", to 3.7"; therefore, maintaining 300+ ppi - which SJ marketed brilliantly at WWDC, saying it's a 'magical number.' Apple, I think, may have kept the bezel the same size as now, so you have something to rest one - that's why it's bigger; as you can fit a 3.7" screen in the current iPhone case, just with a smaller bezel.
Doubt it, I'd very much expect them to make it slightly wider but then quite a bit longer to a 4" screen.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_2_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/533.17.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.0.2 Mobile/8C148 Safari/6533.18.5)

Could Apple make a 720p HD screen with the wider body? Even call it "iPhone HD"?

I will reserve judgement until oficially announced but here's one question: wouldn't a "teardrop" design be akward to use in landsdcape mode?

I was hoping I'd be able to resist buying the new iPhone 5 but after to seeing it.
I want one. iPhone 4 for sale.

A 4" screen sounds perfect to me. It would mean a 30% larger screen, which seems a good trade off for the slightly increased height and width. And I'm guessing it will probably be thinner on average.

I'd be surprised if they increase the resolution as it would mean a lot of pain for developers, who would have heard about that by now. It will still be plenty enough pixels per inch, and probably still enough to call it a "retina" display.

hmm, think I can jump on this one - the Box look did not do it for me, hold on to the 3GS till they change it.

The iPhone 4 does indeed have an ugly shape. I'm expecting the next iPhone to be thinner and shaped somewhat like and iPod Touch.

They have said that a rumoured cheaper iPhone 4 plastic type of device will also be more powerful then the current iPhone 4, may be more interesting, perhaps it could have an A5 chip that's lower clocked, or maybe the massive iPhone will have much more powerful hardware then the A5 chip? I mean rumours are calling a iPad 3 by Christmas? Quad core A5's?

Headphone jack at the top? Space for a flash? Mute switch?;)

You know, to be fair, that doesn't fully mean it can't be related to the next iPod touch.

Headphones, sure maybe.

Flash? Maybe they're bringing to the iPod line - I mean, it wasn't so long ago that even just a hole being there would give the same argument - " Oh it can't be an iPod touch case - it has a hole for a camera!". Features trickle down to lower models - it's an effective business strategy for providing a product line with a stream of updates every year.

Mute switch? Again, the iPad has one, and it's not a phone. Sure you can argue it's more for orientation-lock for that device, but even then, the switch is actually mute by default, and the iPod touch as a genuine iOS device could use one anyway. just making all the devices have the same controls is useful.

Not saying it is, but a lot of signs that my be unique to the iPhone doesn't mean it always will remain that way.

This is very very very very very very very bad if true! I just got the tape measure out and saw just how much bigger half an inch is!!:eek::eek::eek:

Sorry but no way and no thanks. I would settle for a 3.7" screen, 4" really pushing it, but if Apple's gone the 4.3" plus router, not for me.
I like a MOBILE phone, not a bloody HD telly in my pocket! And I would even go as far as to say it would turn potential buyers away if it's too big.

Hmm, that Sony Ericsson Ray is looking better....

The iPhone 4's screen is very small. 4"-4.3" screens on android phones are the big sellers.

I love the box design, it looks extremely professional, very sturdy design and just oozes gorgeous. The rounded backs have always seemed more 'playful,' 'toy-esque' to me, I'd get used to using it I guess, but I would much rather prefer a continuation of the iPhone 4 design.

I would like to know why exactly the 4 design fell out of favour with some of the executives.

As mentioned, the iPhone 4's screen is small. Also, the phone itself is tiny.

Even though I am not a big fan of a thin phone, if the screen is increased, I'm upgrading.

Ok, but why would apple of all companies make their devise thicker just for these additions?

if you think like as making dough, take the shape of the iPhone 4 and smash it with that big round wood hammer and you get the next iPhone design. :D

That would be great. I expect for it to be as thin if not thinner than the SGS2 seeing as that's the competitor to beat at this time. Also, a screen size increase (if even 0.5in) would be very, very welcome.

Did some quick calculations to ascertain possible screen size. For simplicity's sake, let's assume bezel width has stayed the same and the added length and width are purely devoted to screen real estate.

iphone 4: 4.5 x 2.31"
Screen: 3.5" diagonal ratio: 3:2 (2.91" tall, 1.94" wide)

iphone 5: 5.0 x 2.8"
Screen: xx" diagonal

Since both dimensions increased by half an inch, only the longer dimension (screen height) can increase by that much, else the 3:2 ratio would be broken. So, screen height increases by 0.5" and screen width increases by (2/3) * 0.5" = 0.33"

So,

Screen: 3.41" tall, 2.27" wide -> 4.096" diagonal screen. So, a 4" or 4.1" screen.

Assuming 960x640 resolution: 281 PPI. Just below "retina" resolution of 300 PPI.

As a Samsung Galaxy S owner I am VERY happy Apple is finally going with a larger screen. I think 4" is perfect. My Fascinates 4" screen is just right. EVO's 4.3" is too big IMO and iPhones 3.5" is just too small.

Huzzah! Finally, Apple has a phone I can get down with. =D

What he said - 4 inches is the absolute sweet spot in screen sizes... I've had them all and completely agree with this guy.

The whole bigger Home button just looks off. Is Apple really doing this? If we have a larger screen, what's the point of the larger home button? Looks to be a bigger lint/dirt trap to me.

Still waiting for a touch sensitive home button so the whole front can be a smooth piece of glass.

no no no
this is not what i expected
why made so much changes, apple really know how to spring an surprise.

I wanna see a Desire HD-like iPhone. That would be awesome.

In fact, if Apple and HTC just went right ahead and made a phone together, with Apple on the software and HTC on the hardware, that would be amazing
