Has no one suggested that the hole on the right could be for a possible LED indicator, with volume/mute buttons remaining in same place?

If this is true, I'm stalking up on iPhone 4's. I love the industrial box look of the 4.

Did some quick calculations

Kudos. But weren't the 5.0" and 2.8" the external measures of the 3rd party case? Still, I believe a 4" display would fit if the edges are narrower than currently.

Either way, my 3G can finally go to rest when the 5 comes out!

So, which one is it: 3.8" or 4"?

Definitely under 4".

A droid X with a 4.3" screen is a size that has some people complaining that it is getting too big.

To put this in perspective. The width of that screen is 2.11".

The width of iPhone Aspect at 3.8" is also 2.11".

With that in mind I would expect the most likely size will be 3.8" or less.

Why would you put an LED indicator on the side of the phone? And why would you need to have a hole that large for one?

It's not. I wish it were, but it's not. Jobs is saving that for 3 generations later when it can be introduced as "revolutionary."

If there's a big increase in screen size, wouldn't they have to rework the buttons and UI elements to make them the same size? Wouldn't there be fragmentation between apps made for each screen size? This makes me skeptical of anything over about 3.7"

I wouldn't think so. If you go from 3.5" to 3.8", say, that's less than 10% larger, which should be well within tolerances for UI controls, and at the same resolution you're still talking about around 300 ppi, everything should still look sharp. Going smaller would be more problematic.

If thats what the new iphone will look like.... Im sad to say they got me. I notice theres no 40 pin in that mock up. Wouldnt it be fabulous if they created some wireless charging apparatus for it. Fully wireless syncing. If not this model then the iphone 6 will.

the hole in the upper right of the red case

i hope that hole is for a thunderbolt port and not a camera hole
sorry i just had my 3rd shot of jim beam bourbon at happy hour bar
my freind has reminded me not to leave the iphone 5 prototype behind this time

And to think Stevie said nobody would want a phone with a big screen. And of course all the blind loyalists agreed. But now this next iphone looks like it may very will be bigger and with a bigger screen, and again, the blind loyalist have changed their tune to say they would love a bigger screen. Everyone will also welcome and praise the new hardware, all the while forgetting that they routinely profess that specs don't matter.

Apple has no choice but to play catch up from this point on. Samsung will be introducing their next superphone in Feb/2012. So it should be a great shootout to see the iPhone 5 vs Samsung Galaxy S3. If the iPhone 5 clearly shows to be superior in performance, you can bet I'll ditch my Galaxy S2 for it, otherwise I'll be looking forward to a Galaxy S3 Windows phone.

Don't see why Apple has to play catch up with the other companies. iPhone 4 is well behind the Android phones when it comes to hardware, but people are still buying iPhones and not android devices. Makes no sense.

This is absolutely perfect if true. It's only a hair wider than the original iPhone, if a good bit taller and even thinner than the iPhone 4. In four years of ownership I have yet to find a pocket my iPhone didn't easily slip into.

So you don't think the reason the iPhone sells so well is because it DOES have a small screen and smaller form factor then?

No, it sells because it's Apple's latest. I agree the iPhone 4 is a great looking phone. The retina display is beautiful. However, for many, including myself, the screen is just too small. A 4" screen could still have close to a retina display. Also, I bought a case not for protection but for bulk; the small form felt too small (I know, very subjective)

It's very similar to the dilemma of the mbas. Initially, the 11" catches your eye. After a while, the looks matter less than utility and comfort. So, the smaller screen and form factor become less desirable and some switch or wish to switch to the 13" (obviously there are many who prefer the 11" just like those who prefer the 3.5" iphone screen). Although, in the mbas case, price is a big factor.
