I don't like it. No hyperbole, it wouldn't be 'ugly', but it would be the least beautiful iPhone design IMHO.

I think what the issue is for me is the 'cutout' looks kind of like a compromise... like they want a simple piece of glass as a phone, but have to put the pesky camera and earpiece somewhere ... so they have to do that weird cutout. Whereas before, the bezels (whatever one thinks of them aethestically) had a form that followed their function, with clean lines that segmented the area of the phone they were there for - the top for the earpiece and camera, the bottom for the home button, together they balanced the design.

That cutout looks 'try-hard'... like they wanted to elimate the bezels so much they are putting up with it until they can figure out how to do it properly.

But no-one, including Apple, should care what I think, I am happy with my SE. :D

Interesting - let's say this is final design - where is Apple putting all these display icons

View attachment 705425

We know that Apple is going back to bars, not dots, for the reception indicator, so that frees up some room. They could easily fit the reception bars/provider/wifi/location services on the left, and battery% + indicator on the right. If they enlarge the indicators somewhat (and it looks like they could based on the area) they could put the % inside the battery icon, and then the bluetooth/alarm/orientation lock should be able to fit alongside.

As for the time stamp, it remains to be seen. But don't forget that by not having the physical Touch ID button and large bottom bezel that essentially gives Apple yet another full 'row' to utilize on screen. Of course there will be the Touch ID area, but it may be just a simple extension of the dockbar downward (with the 'Touch ID row' always on screen, even in apps). The remaining indicators could be put in this area, or the control center.

I wonder if the new iPhone's will have a similar dock area in IOS 11 as the iPad Pro will be getting? It would be interesting to see what happens and what Apple are holding back like they usually do until the new phones come out.

Hope it's easier to hold. I hear jet black is tackier. I'm still on the 6S and after many unwanted drops begrudgingly put it in a thin case for better grip.

The mock-up does look good though.

Thats the photo from the iPad Pro box AND its upside down.. Fake... maybe its a cutout from the iPad box and placed under the glass.

Queue the “it’s an iPhone 7 with a bigger screen” people ;)

Personally I’d be happy with this design. I’ve been waiting a long time for them to get rid of the chin and the, er, forehead?

If they use the screen either side of the cutout for the cellular signal/battery and such. Or maybe move the clock to the right hand side. That would be fine with me, it’s making use of otherwise not so useful space.

The rest of the screen could be the available space for apps and we would have a persistent clock/cell/notification/whatever area that could perhaps be blacked out if an app wants “full screen”.

I don't really understand the fascination with removing bezels at all costs. As noted here by several others, the cut-away at the top of this example creates dead space, which is either useless or requires inelegant placement of various indicators that currently run across the top of an iPhone screen. Next, you have the rounded corners. Since approximately zero content starts out with rounded corners, this mock-up concept either gives you clipped corners or bezels masquerading as useless screen space.

I wouldn't be surprised if, as they've done with iPad Pro, Apple will work to further reduce the size of bezels, but they're not going to have cut-aways and rounded corners that make for a dandy wallpaper display while gobbing up functionality.

I really don't care about all the fuss around the 8. in fact, the 7S isn't doing anything for me either. I am perfectly happy with my 6S. BUT, based on all the positive fanboi comments about the 8, it just might be time to buy some more AAPL stock!!

I can't wait for the keynote in a few months, hopefully the live stream doesn't judder too much.
As is always the case, (a lot of) people expect leak photos to be the final design/product.
This cutout at the top, Apple have already spent millions on R&D, and if this is the final design, we can expect them to get it right.
I've queued up for only one product, the iPad 2. It wasn't an early queue up, as it was at a local store and for some reason they couldn't start selling till 4pm or 5pm (I forget).
Don't think I would queue up again, launches aren't quite the same with Jobs not at the helm and his luring keynotes.

The top screen cutout makes no sense. It can't be used for anything and breaks the phone's symmetry

Am I the only one that finds the “widows peak” unattractive? I’d rather see a slight bezel at the top and bottom for symmetry sake. I also wonder what the content will look like if it runs all the way up to the top. Or will there be a black bar that’s occupied only by the signal, time and date?

Still thinks it's a dumb move to have the screen "shoulders" up top. Either you bleed the full screen to it making it look very awkward, or you keep it black and reserve the space strictly for the status bar, which seems like a lot of work for a very inhuman and unnecessary change.

Actually the cutout would make more sense on the bottom, where you would be able to use that space for an always-on dock, or back button, or volume controls while watching a video.
