no more two year agreement??? wouldn't that be nice.

They've updated the "Never Been an iPod" and "Calamari" ads on the Apple website, and they've removed that text from the ads. For some reason they've left the text in the "How To" ad. I'm sure they'll remove it soon.

I wonder why they've decided to remove it. Maybe Apple is still negotiating with AT&T about it...

It's off all the ads now... hmm very interesting....

no 2 year agreement on ads

If the price isn't subsidized like they normally do it would be nice to not have an agreement then. It never made sense to me to sell the camera for full price and have to sign an agreement, all other phones through cingular that are full price don't have any agreement restrictions.

If the phone is not subsidized (which I don't think we know for certain) then a contract commitment must get you SOMETHING--probably a rate discount, just like when you sign a longer contract for an ISP, cable TV, or apartment rental. That might be something AT&T needs to do in order to get the monthly cost below some level Apple wanted. I can see Apple wanting a full data plan to be unusually cheap--cheaper than with those other unsubsidized phones--since Apple wants to bring advanced Internet functionality to a wider, less hard core audience. Maybe a contract commitment is a way that can happen. And if that's all it is--a monthly reduction rather than subsidizing the hardware--then I can see it being optional. Just like with your ISP or cable TV. Commit to a shorter time if you want, but pay more per month.

Or the contract may well be 100% required still, just not mentioned in the ad because they decided it was a detail they didn't have to get into.

What's the little "2" in the bottom right of Safari in the ad, now that we can see high res? Maybe tap to cycle through multiple open pages, each one numbered? Or maybe it's the total pages open? I wonder how you close a page if you can have more than one open (as I think you can)?

BTW I really like how the iPhone hides the URL bar when you zoom in. More space to show more detail.

The Macs this year: an updated macbook pro, an updated macbook, and an updated mac pro. The macbooks are the least of my worries b/c their form factor was just renewed last year, but if the last 30 years were just the beginning and 2007 is the start of this whole new apple world, then why are they continuing to update products that havent really in their entirety physically changed for the last 4 years!?! The all titanium macbook pro hasnt hasnt been changed for the last 3.5 years and the same time for the all alumnium mac pro.

time for apple to update. they really need to introduce a whole new imac or any mac at WWDC.

So it's the appearance of Macs you wish Apple would change? That's the detail that has suffered when the iPhone made the MacBook Pro worse? :p Change is fun, but I like the current look just fine and it's not a big deal to me compared to functionality, features, usability, and what you get for your money. Which is a lot.

Believe me, I completely understand what you mean. What I say is that Apple is a company that wants to increase their income, and the iPhone seems to be the best move at the moment. Most people love the MBP design, most people love Tiger and don't care to wait 4 months for Leopard to be released, and they also love the Mac Pro and iMac design.

So if the vast majority of Mac owners is satisfied with the current products, and you have one new product coming that can make you win millions, why rush the redesign of an already top-selling product?

Roco you do not see or feel the stagnation but believe me others do. And the things that got Apple to where they are now are starting to be diluted by a need to grow in different directions.

Profit is a result not a goal of true innovators.

I for one have no argument with the fun, functionality thing.
Just commenting on the fact that after almost 4 years, 2 major product lines in the Apple quiver have only seen revisions and not redesigns.

I'm the first to recognize the longevity and true greatness of older Apple products. But it's time for some NEW computer stuff...thats all.
Oh...and a new iPod :D

Note that during this time of "stagnation" Apple took ALL their Mac lines and their entire OS to an entirely new and incompatible architecture, and completed the transition HIGHLY successfully in under a year. Apple's "other directions" didn't stop them pulling it off. In fact, those other products win a lot of switchers--and that helps both Apple and app developers bring us more cool stuff. Meanwhile Apple has done very significant things with OS X--and has delayed them only 4 months.

Profit is a result not a goal of true innovators.

Profit is a result, not a goal, of the iPhone :) Any company has to make money, but the iPhone's design truly is about doing things better--just like the Mac itself (and in fact it is a Mac in a sense). It's not about riding some fad to quick profits.

The iPhone will do a lot--even more than the iPod--to promote and enhance the Mac platform. And it will of course lead to really cool iPods too, down the road :)

I don't remember saying they were stagnant. I fully acknowledged the upgrades that have been made. I bought one! All I'm saying is the resources that would normally have resulted in a NEW MBP or iMac have been moved and caused this situation of no new innovation...but most definately much improvement....to the computer products.

I never suggested the iPhone was anything but amazing. It will make a bundle...I love it:D
And it is truely Apple in all ways...get my point?

You did a couple posts above that one :p

All I'm saying is the resources that would normally have resulted in a NEW MBP or iMac have been moved and caused this situation of no new innovation...but most definately much improvement....to the computer products.

By no new innovation you mean no new appearance, right? You're not referring to the internals?

The internals of the MacBook Pro are as advanced as could be had for the price. And a new iMac will of course be coming.

The iPhone runs OS X and took some people off of the main Leopard project to the tune of a mere 4 months (not the 4 years you're talking about). But the iPhone did not make it impossible to come up with new appearances for hardware.

One VERY good reason why the first Intel machines look similar to the last PPC machines is that this comforts the skeptical through a "scary" CPU transition.

Meanwhile, the iBook/MacBook WAS totally redesigned during your period of "no" new innovation. As was Airport and a bunch of iPods. Meanwhile the MacBook Pro, iMac, and Mac Pro got major redesigns as well (not to mention a new size of iMac). While looking similar on the outside, they are totally different inside. (The outer dimensions of the MacBook Pro aren't even the same as the first Al PowerBooks.) And I suspect pro buyers often care more about functionality improvements than changing the style just for style's sake.

And all this time, during the iPhone project, new Macs HAVE been designed. Even new appearances. That doesn't happen instantly, so as we see the fruits of those projects in the year ahead, you'll know the iPhone did not prevent them. One, I hope, will be a subnotebook :)

And Apple's software and OS innovation continues as well--at full speed ahead. The iPhone is actually a PART of that. Leopard for Macs is another, as we will see soon enough.

While I have zero personal interest in buying an iPhone, I have to applaud Apple for this ad campaign. It's what the infuriating 'Get a Mac' ads should have been: simple, elegant showcases of the great technology in the product. Here's hoping that we see more ads like this, across all Apple product lines.

So this is the new Safari UI? (see dropdown)

Good catch :)

I'm going to guess that that's the look for iPhone Safari (aqua glass doesn't really make an appearance there), but that this doesn't tell us either way about Leopard Safari.

Whether or not that excites me really depends on if it has Flash.

Flash on iPhone would be awesome. Access to flash sites, flash videos, and flash GAMES (picture gaming on multitouch)...

Nokia phones have flash, so why wouldn't the iPhone?

someone probably knows the answer to this

will the iPhone sync "completely" with Address Book and iCal and Mail?

--will all the content of a contact--multiple phone numbers, addresses, notes, show from Address Book sync?

--all iCal functions, including full calendar entry and related notes, alarms, etc.?

i'd appreciate any info anyone can provide. Having all my notebook computer's pertinent contact/cal/mail info at my fingertips is a key to the iPhone purchasing decision for me.

Great ads, all of them

I really love these iPhone ads! They've all been so good. Simple and to the point. And you know what the best part of them is? They actually SHOW the friggin' device being used! What a concept!
Now, Apple, why oh why do you not do Macintosh ad like this???

When's the last time anyone saw a Mac based ad that actually showed Mac OS X being used for all sorts of cool things. I'm not saying all their ads should be this way. The Mac/PC ads have been very good and entertaining, but I'd like to see some ads that show off Leopard features once the OS is out. I really hope they do this.

What about the iPod? If you ask me, the iPod "was/is/and-probably-is-going-to-be" the reason for which Apple is where it is right now. Not the Mac, the iPod.

Yeah, it's for multiple open pages/sites. Steve demonstrated this feature with NYTimes and Amazon at around the 1:10:15 mark of the MacWorld podcast. You can close a page by going to the multiple page view and tapping the red X.

Someone asked if Safari has some sort of "article sensing", as it seems to neatly center around articles when the guy double-taps around. But if you look closely, you can see that the spot on which he taps on is exactly where after the zooming the middle of the screen will be.

I guess this guy had to practice that a thousand times until he got it right, but now it looks like the phone magically centers around an article, but in reality it's just good aiming.

Well, already iSync can sync multiple phone numbers, addresses, notes, and pictures from Address Book to some smartphones. (My Nokia smartphone syncs all that.)

Nobody (that isn't under Apple's NDA) has seen a fully functional calendar on the iPhone yet. We don't really know what will happen on the calendar. During the January keynote, all that was shown was a static picture of the calendar, no actual demo of how it works.

I was attending a Macromedia Conference (Max2005) and they showed off the flash player for mobile devices.

Sine Adobe and Mac are so tight i would not be surprised to flash on the iPhone.

Actually it DOES "magically" zoom exactly to fit any column of text (or image) you double-tab. No practice needed--the phone is that smart, as was shown in more detail in January, as well as in the Apple.com demos.

NY Times page cached from Oct 2, 2006

Didn't read the whole thread so I apologize in advance if already mentioned...

I saw how the NYT page was chached so we didn't have to watch it download for three minutes over EDGE.

Grrr.

Yup - definitely cached. If you look closely, the date on the NY Times page is October 2, 2006! If you notice, he doesn't "click" on any link on the page - he just moves it around the different areas of the page. He doesn't even load the initial page - it just opens to NY Times after hitting the Safari icon.

Excellent ads!

These are classy and effective ads, Apple, showing off the features of the iphone and your innovation with elegance! Great job!! :apple: I look forward to the roll-out, and to any additional features that are added down the line. :)
