why not? It is possible. I always welcome to new touch whatsoever. No doubt I will purchase new one. If it is true, I will love it.

If the iPhone is getting all iPhonechromatic - will the Touch's get color versions too?

I think if Apple incorporates a camera in the new iPod touch, the client base will sky rocket. For instance, I have a cell phone though my work which is free, so buying an iPhone for me would be useless. If a camera is implanted into the touch, people in the same situation as myself (or different situations) would eat up the camera touch.

It would also be nice if the new model(s) would include some sort of rubberized grip. it sucks trying to find a protective case that's 50+ dollars...and/or isn't the exact style, fit, or look you desire.

I will be so annoyed if the touch gets a camera... lol.

Although, then, those iPod's would FLY off the shelves.

If the iPod Touch gains:
- Camera
- Autofocus
- >= 3 Mega Pixel sensor
- Bluetooth
I would buy it online the same day it's released.

If it also is released in those cool Chromatic colors, I'll take leave - fly to Syndey Australia to stand in line to buy mine on the first day.

When Apple released the iPhone I think they wanted it to be THE device that people carried around, including phone, media player, camera etc. Then they released the iPod touch that I think they only wanted to be a media player, but thought "hey now that it has wifi we can't just not give it the cool internet stuff."

Apple might be now be turning the iPod touch to a the new device that people always carry, giving it camera and such, If they are giving it a camera I wouldn't be very surprised if they gave it HQ video recording (I'm talking SVGA at least now) so it could replace a digital camera and a camcorder. Because most people don't just switch phones just like that because there's a new one, but a lot more people would buy themselves a new mp3 player if they think their current one is too old

My "three-day wild guesses" right now:

iPod touch--will go to 3rd-generation iPhone shape but will have storage capacities of 16 GB, 32 GB and 64 GB.

iPod nano--looks almost exactly the same as current 4G model but will be slightly thicker to accommodate larger-capacity battery and a capacity upgrade to 32 GB maximum. This will likely be the final generation of iPods with the click wheel interface before the successor arrives in September 2010 with a true touch-screen interface derived the iPhone/iPod touch interface.

Camera hopes

If the touches are getting cams then that is great news!! There was a rumor of apple ordering large numbers of 3 and 5 megapixel cams in here not long ago. If this rumor is true that could mean the touches would get three mp and the iPhone would get the 5 mp ... And if that's true plus an autofocus I will cry with happynes!! Or shoot my load ;)

The only reason I held off getting an iPhone for the first year was downto the lack of a decent cam, and since getting the 3g everytime I attempt to use the camera I am very much dissapointed at the results, this has been long long overdue and the biggest mistake by apple so far... Let's hope I'm right!

I can already see iPhone sales dropping if the iPod touch gets a camera. Why spend, say, $1000-$2000 over two years when you can buy an iPod touch that can make calls (over Skype), take photos, have bluetooth capability (when iPhone OS 3.0 is out), and do pretty much everything else the iPhone can do?

Camera and other features migrating downward to iPT is an eventuality. Some people were pooh-poohing the possibility of it ever happening, but come on.

The iPhone will keep getting better as the primary innovator and the iPT will get those features a couple years later.

And, there is still a GIANT reason to get a phone rather than an iPT--incoming calls and constant (relatively) connection to communication.

Maybe they won't change the shape and design... that doesn't exclude that Apple might change the material they use to make it!

Metal, I want mettaallll

How come so many people don't like the white/black plastic? I like the look and feel of it. I have white. And didn't they stop using metal so they get better service?

Will all the new rumored features coming to the new iPhone FIT in the same form factor?

I was hoping that there would be a larger, higher res OLED screen in the new phone.

I am still not clear as to how a change in resolution would affect apps. Can current apps designed for 480 x 320 function on a new/higher res?

Any thoughts?

As to a metal back, aside from adding weight, will it not interfere with reception?

Apple seem pretty good at making small products. e.g. in the new shuffle
http://www.businessweek.com/technology/content/apr2009/tc20090410_507831_page_2.htm

The device contains a tiny lithium ion battery that costs $1.20, and that Rassweiler describes as "the smallest we've ever seen." And for a company that doesn't ignore the tiniest of details, the most mundane of components are the most advanced available. The device's so-called passive components—capacitors and resistors—are unusually small. Known by their numeric label 01005, which in electronics shorthand describes their dimensions in thousandths of an inch, they're about the size of a grain of salt and cost fractions of a penny each. But they're half the size of what had previously been considered the smallest device of their type, those labeled 0201.

It's just one of many ways that Apple continues to differentiate its products from the rest of the pack. "Until recently we didn't see passive components quite this small," Rassweiler says. "Here you see them working on the cutting edge, even on the passives." They also help save space inside.

The size per GB is decreasing - not sure if it's just halved, or more (if you check out the news on the recent Apple mass purchase of RAM you should be able to find out). If you just generally compare the EDGE iPhone to the iPhone 3G you can see they made decent space savings through the redesign. If they did go OLED, that might give them even more space.

As for other components - if they can go more towards a SoC design, that'd make more space.
For magnetometers- check out the relative sizes of the N97's.
GPS chip likely to get smaller.
Who knows, eh? iPhone 3G teardowns give a rough idea of how packed it is in there.

A camera? That's it? The new iPod touch better have:

- video recording
- GPS
- a built-in microphone and better speakers
- 802.11n and HSPA

I WILL not buy one until Apple meets my demands!
Just in case you didn't pick up on it, I'm being sarcastic.

I'd be surprised if they added a camera to the touch, but if they did they may keep video exclusive to the 3rd-gen iPhone to compensate. Apple loves the up-sell.

Well, I'm being serious when I say I wont buy one until I see:
-Built in Microwave
-Shaver
-Toilet Paper dispenser
-Back Scratcher
-Universal Mute button (capable of muting anyone you point it at)
-Space ship
-Toaster

^I demand these be fulfilled in the point of 1 month, or I will make online petition!

The big selling point is that the iPhone is a fricking phone. How you gonna make calls via Skype if you don't have an open WiFi connection nearby? Being connected via 3G or Edge is the selling point.

What makes you think it is? There's at least a reasonable chance that it's a June thing.
Apple usually updates their iPod line in September. They start their "Buy a Mac, Get an iPod" deal about when school starts, and once that has expired (to try and sell as many of the current generation iPods as possible), they update the iPod line. June events usually involve iPhone related updates.

An iPod Touch w/ camera would appeal to those who don't want an iPhone (someone asked earlier in thread). I don't have a cell phone but would love for a more capable iPod Touch. A camera isn't on my list but an iPod Tough w/ GPS

I would buy one of those! :D Bet the screen would never crack.

Hope Apple don't wait until September :( I crave the yet to be released iPod Touch.

So you're honestly suggesting that at the moment people are willingly paying "$1000-$2000 over two years" just to effectively have an iPod Touch with a camera?
