Correct. 32GB is the sweet spot right now, so I'd expect the next gen iPhone to be offered with a base of 16GB and top out at 32GB

I saw news stories like this over a year and a half ago: http://techreport.com/discussions.x/13442

You're telling me they haven't been able to break the 32GB barrier for over a year now? I don't believe it.

EDIT: Maybe the memory development industry moves slowly...considering this just came out a couple days ago: http://www.tomshardware.com/news/samsung-movinand-32gb-flash-memory,7782.html

Crap...I'd still gladly pay more to have a slightly thicker iPhone that had two 32GB chips in it.

Are you kidding me? there is no way the screen could be a 6 inch diagonal. The device would be almost four times as big! I dunno what kinda pockets you have.... not to mention how rediculous we would all look holding that up to our ears...
Well the exact size can vary just so long as it still fits in a shirt pocket. My current ipod touch leaves plenty of room for growth - about an inch all around.
but why would you want to hold your ipod touch to your ear? That's what headphones are for.

People need to stop seeing the Touch as an iPhone without the phone function because I do believe that it is going to be pushed into another direction and have capabilities the iPhone doesn't

Why do you say that? I don't see Apple leaving their flagship portable device in the dust.

Actually it is a word:

usage Irregardless originated in dialectal American speech in the early 20th century. Its fairly widespread use in speech called it to the attention of usage commentators as early as 1927. The most frequently repeated remark about it is that “there is no such word.” There is such a word, however. It is still used primarily in speech, although it can be found from time to time in edited prose...

from... Webster ...
No offence, but Webster's is not a Dictionary that you can use to prove something "is a word."

When someone says such and such "is not a word" they mean "is not an English word" most of the time. The only dictionaries that can tell you what words are English words, are English dictionaries.

Webster's is the dictionary of the American dialect and the variations of English that arise in the USA. It is not a dictionary of English or the English language.

I'm not trying to be mean here, (or anti-American) but when someone says "that's not a (English) word" they usually mean that it's some recent variation that some people use but not an official word. Webster's is basically a catalogue of the American variants of English, so unfortunately, it doesn't count.

Well in accordance to the holding up to the ear, I thought we were talking about the iPhone, so I take that one back.

As for the dimensions of the unit, the screen alone would need to be just over 3 inches wide and 5 inches tall to achieve a 6inch screen diagonal... if i have done my math right (since i don't have a ruler) the current screen is about 1.85 inches wide by 3 inches tall.... thats a big increase still.

Not to mention the pain it would be on the App store to have developers remake apps since I don't think the screen res on the 6inch would be the same as the screen res on the 3.5inch.

All they can do is bump up internal specification of the hardware really, and that's all they need to do.

Ya. I would really like a speed boost. A few apps that are available through the store could use a little more horsepower. As far as design goes, I'm ok with no change. The beauty of the full touch screen is that they can really modify how the phone "looks" and works by changing the software and keeping the same exterior...

It would be cool to see the front of the iPhone/iPod touch that is not the screen shrink...ie device gets a bit shorter, so the same size screen takes up more of a percentage of the front face.

Not everyone relies on pockets... like sightly more than half the population + anyone who uses a tote.

Very comedic indeed.

So a quick hypothetical:

They give the iPod Touch EVERY feature an iPhone can do, only any iPhone can naturally make calls.

You would abandon your old phone, pay 30$ more a month on your service, and get horrible voice quality, JUST because its a phone?

I PERSONALLY would get an iPod Touch, have no commitment or contract, and keep my current phone. You know, so I can actually hear what the other person is saying.

Hmmm

Well, voice AND 3G data (always connected.)
I wouldn't turn up my nose at a free (including service) iPhone, but out of pocket, I don't need to spend 1.5 grand/year because I can't wait for a hotspot to get data.
touch is fine with me.

Exactly my point.

woot woot

Makes sense. Apple will still call the iPhone, 3G. This way they don't have to change anything to make it look different, just the hardware inside and software. I hope though they would add at least one more color, black and white is boring now. =)

I don't think camera on the Nano would hurt, it will be cool feature, now iPod Touch is getting very very close to being iPhone. Camera was one of the biggest differentiators from iPhone. Weird move.

Agree with those who say GPS would be an even better addition to the iPod Touch. And work with Garmin or one of those companies to make an app for turn-by-turn directions that functions just like their own devices. Except it'll be even more seamless, fading out the music when directions are spoken, and then fading it back in.

This is such a no-brainer, I'm still surprised Apple didn't get it done last year!

I agree - I think they could get away with calling it the iPhone 3G. Will they keep the current model though?

16GB old model, 16GB new model, and 32GB model in new colors perhaps? The mockups of nanochromatic look plausible. Hasn't there been some modded iPhones to be non-monochromatic?

If they put a camera on the ipod touch I might get one.
This is sounding cool! let's see if more rumors appear on this till September

Right...it's more of a convenience thing. I don't enjoy having to pick and choose stuff, because who knows what I will suddenly feel like listening to at some point later in the day or week or whatever.

Moreover, I do some professional audio work and often need to find house music that "fits" the event I'm running...so I need to have a really diverse collection at my fingertips, ready to go.

Congratulations on displaying outstanding patience with the silliest string of questions I've long seen.
The HORROR of you actually wanting more than a few hours of hi rez music on your iPod. Imagine!

:)

I'm holding out for an ipod touch that has gps (assuming the ability to use preloaded maps).

OR

An iphone that MY carrier will sell at full retail price and let me use with my existing plan. It's currently only available at the contract price and there is an "iphone surcharge" to purchase it. No thanks, I already have the ultimate plan and I'm not messing with it.

Putting a camera in a nano is insane. Maybe Apple thinks everyone working out in gyms uses the Shuffle but there are plenty that use nanos. Just about every gym I've been to in the past few years has an explicit ban on cameras. You see where I'm going. Apple will kill a good segment of the nano market if they build in a camera because they'll be prohibited.

I don't know where you got 1.5 grand a year. Sure, if you talk a whole lot on your phone, then it might be that much to get a plan with enough minutes for the iPhone. If you don't have a cell phone plan right now, then it means you probably won't be talking much if you get an iPhone either so you could get by spending $70 a month which only comes out to being $840 a year, not the nearly double $1500. If you already have a basic phone plan and only pay $40 a month, that comes out to $480 a year so the difference really is $360, which is how much the data plan is. With the rumored price of the data plan going to $20 a month, that's really only $240 a year extra you would be paying so spending $1500 a year doesn't make sense if you already have a phone.

About time real iPhone rumors have been coming out. There has been exciting 3.0 stuff but it's good to hear changes in the iPod line. Just a little dissapointed in apple's choice in sticking to the same shape/material for the back; don't mind the shape, but I desire an aluminum backing in the 3G's current shape though.

Surely for a company where every gram and millimetre matters, adding a camera to the nano would make little sense? I'd rather better battery life than a camera.

Well that size would be about perfect IMO (3x5) Basically a fat ipod touch.
It would fit a shirt pocket just fine and I wouldn't care to have it in my front pockets cause I carry metal coins and keys there. Back pockets and I am going to sit on it. It would fit most any cargo pant just fine too.
You could just have slightly larger pixels or have side bars that could be programed with buttons or such. Not so hard to do.

The ipod Touch is the size it is because it was built with basically the same parts and form factor as the iphone which was a proven winner. I think the evidence is in that the ipod Touch is capable of standing on its own with its own feature set. Thus I think it should evolve towards an internet tablet more than a music player and to that end it needs a larger screen. Not a huge screen mind you but just a bit larger - a fat Touch as it were.

I think the back is going to be the shame shape except it's metallic:
