I do wonder how good the camera would be on the ipod touch?

Everyone must be dense here.

All the newer smart phones are said to stream video, flash, mepg, xvid, meanwhile, which is a shame as the iPhone will never live to its full potential.

Anything that takes away from iCrude rentals or Apple TV, e.g., video on the iPhone/iPod, will never make it to the iPhone.

What Apple will do to sidetrack questions like this is that they will release some crummy iVid iLife program that allows you to shoot video on your iPhone while you are camping in Rome with Geo Tagging. Oh boy, I can hardly wait for all the crummy demo's at WWDC, camping and oh yeah, super imposed backgrounds. Something that will be a novalty in no time flat when in fact, most users want VIDEO STREAMING and not iTunes rentals and APPLE TV.

The future is streaming video on devices, in other countries they have full TV on their phones.

Apple, once again, worrying about the .01 % of Apple TV users, will therefore not release the iDEVICE to stream video unless it's a rental.

They did the same thing with Macbook, fearing the PRO users (.1%) would use the MACBOOK instead of the PRO, Apple cripples the MACBOOK, removes FireWire, no dedicated GPU.

Yay, more useless one to one, I don't know PRO APP apple trainers but do know how to shoot a cheap iPhone video, iVid movie for iLife.

Ugggg.
:p

I guess when the iPod Touch and Nano came out they were marketted as media players, but the success of the App Store has seen Apple now pushing the iPod Touch as a portable gaming platform, and maybe wants to push the Nano that way too. Adding cameras would help position them - certainly the Nano - competitively alongside the Nintendo DSi, albeit both have their USPs

Ugh. The single most important improvemnet the iPod touch can get right now is 64gb of storage. Every other likely upgrade will be a severe let down. I cringed at the thought of a camera in iPod touch, I am really hoping the camera hardware does not take precious flash storage space inside that tiny case.

Can you elaborate on streaming video and give an example?
Just TV like Qualcomm's Media Flo? Or wireless transmision of video?
Or video recording and streaming upload, like Kyte and Qik?
Have a look at this patent by Apple - A docked iPhone able to wirelessly transmit video, controlled by an Apple remote.

I saw news stories like this over a year and a half ago: http://techreport.com/discussions.x/13442

You're telling me they haven't been able to break the 32GB barrier for over a year now? I don't believe it.

EDIT: Maybe the memory development industry moves slowly...considering this just came out a couple days ago: http://www.tomshardware.com/news/samsung-movinand-32gb-flash-memory,7782.html

Crap...I'd still gladly pay more to have a slightly thicker iPhone that had two 32GB chips in it.

i think it has to do with the yields in the 45nm processes an below. in 6 months 32g will become common place and 64 will be the treat

Excellent... But

I'm on the verge of buying a new MP3 player. I have an iPod 80GB. I want to buy the iPod Touch but for me the selling point would be size. The 32GB Touch out right now doesn't cut it for me. I'm hoping they'll announce a bigger size Touch anytime soon. The camera is very welcomed. There have been rumors of a touch screen Zune also so I'm hoping Apple announces the bigger Touch before I go out and buy the 120GB Zune.

I suggest you wait and see what is announced. I love my itouch but the new zune HD might be pretty nice.

Cameras in the iPod line would be an utter disaster for me, since cameras are not allowed at my workplace. It would force me to get another brand of MP3 player. Heck, the inclusion of the camera in all models of iPhone has been what's holding me back from getting one of those.

That would be the iPhone/iPod via WiFi answering the call coming in on the iPhone attached via hardwire.

Will the new itouch come out in june/july at wwdc??

I'd say iPhone at WWDC, iPod Touch in September/October.

I DON't WANT A CAMERA IN MY TOUCH!!!

Jeez, calm down. TBH, I certainly hope that your wish doesn't come true, I would love a camera in my iPod Touch, I wouldn't mind if they put in a built in microphone so I can make Skype calls without using my headset.

:) It wouldn't be a biggie if it did get one, it might be cool, but you know how everyone whines about the quality of the iPhone Camera now

I think that the idea of a video camera on an iPod or iPhone is in response to the success of Flip HD and the like. The Touch platform would be perfect for something like quick video. Right now, the cheap vid camera market is outselling the dedicated, more expensive video cameras and i think, if this rumor is true, that Apple sees an opportunity for yet another selling point for someone to upgrade to a new iPhone or iPod. I know i would love to have a quick and dirty vid camera while i"m at concerts.

I can't see adding GPS to an iPod Touch anytime in the near future.. GPS chips are still costly, and would put the retail price of the entry level Touch far above the subsidized price of the iPhone..
a camera, on the other hand, would be nice.

And to all those who wish for a metal backed new iPhone, NO! I don't want any worse reception than i already get.. If you put a metal back, you'll need a huge plastic section somewhere on it anyway for the 3g/wifi/gps signal to pass through!

An iPod Touch w/ camera would appeal to those who don't want an iPhone (someone asked earlier in thread). I don't have a cell phone but would love for a more capable iPod Touch. A camera isn't on my list but an iPod Tough w/ GPS is.

A Nano with a camera is a bad idea...let that one focus on music...
