I don't see how it can be thinner, better battery AND 3g/GPS. Something has to give.

I have been racking my brain to figure that out too and only one thing comes to mind!!!!!!!!!! OLED :D That would also explain the $700 price we heard about and why they would allow subsidizing now!

A phone with no battery life is no good. Plain and simple. If they want the iPhone to bomb they will make it with less battery life that the first one. The "iPhone 1" barely lasts a day with wifi left on and moderate use.

Exactly. I can barely make it through the day as it is. There will be a lot of people upset they ever wanted 3G if Apple hasn't found a way to dramatically increase battery size and just gives the option to switch it off.

On the other hand, the iPod touch is quite a bit thinner than it's same size memory iphone counterpart.

If you look at the tear-downs of both devices, the electronics take up the same amount of space more or less. It's at least conceivable to me that less chips, that consume less energy than the current ones could give a better battery life or that a more efficient battery could do the same job with less volume than last years.

Also, all the pics we have seen so far show a thinner iPhone.

Dude, the Touch doesn't have a phone. It's missing a key component to what make the iPhone a phone. Of course its thinner.

But the battery life is the issue. Thinner means smaller battery.
GPS and 3G mean larger drain on that battery.

Nah. A self-contained GPS receiver (the 3rd party kind that connects to a bluetooth phone, not a TomTom or Garmin with screen and speaker) runs about 30 hours on a regular 2800 mAh battery. The chip that would be built into a phone requires barely any power at all, since it's soldered directly into the motherboard and doesn't have send anything.
And 3G...no, with a dense network, it wouldn't require much more power than a GSM/GPRS setup either.

It may well be two phones. Would make sense. Still life in the spec's of the current model for certain geographical areas, just repackage it and make it smaller.

Then release the fat 3G super duper phone @ the same time.

surely has to be thicker! surely! 32GB max? touch has had 32GB for months - give us 64GB now, the 3G chip is about (or should be and also needs air around it to not get too warm) 50% bigger than the current chip, more battery = bigger battery (or as a minimum, same size), an extra camera in there, an extra sensor - can't be thinner.

i believe the rumours of the curved back - it would be ergonomic and attractive and would be thinner at the edges than the current model but thicker in the centre - thus causing some to claim its thinner and some saying its thicker.

and the price? this ain't so new anymore now. yes the 3G thing is wowing everyone but apple HAS TO attack the blackberry so, now the iPhone is going corporate, the price needs to be aggressive.

6 days left.

What's intriguing is that nobody is talking about the back camera. I don't know about you but 2 MP sucks. My 2 year old N73 has a better camera. A sophisticated device like the iPhone should have at least a 3.2 MP if not even a 5 MP camera.

I'll agree on that, something useful, not a silly GPS.

"Place your bets, folks....place your bets." With all of these great rumors rolling around here I am sure Las Vegas has a section just for the iPhone next week. Someone is going to make some some money off of this.

Let me throw one in: The iPhone battery will be...ran by AIR. Longshot, I know.;) Eh, if I win, you know where it came from!:D

You're probably right. But a product's thinness seems to take priority at Apple. When was the last time an Apple product became thicker in its next iteration? The ONLY time I recall was when the 15" Powerbook moved from Ti to Al, and it was only 0.1" thicker.

I was just in Vegas last week, and they opened a new section in the Casino next to the Sports Book for iPhone Wagers only. I say we all fly out and put down a 5 leg parlay on what is/or is not to be a part of this phone.

The case for price drop/spec increase.

With the price of Flash crashing faster than the real estate market, there's no good reason for Apple to up the gb and keep the price as high as it has been, same goes with GPS. I know it's the Jesus phone, but the price HAS put people off, and once Apple gets their hooks into you the barbs stay put. Look at the well documented halo effect of iPods apple sales in general, and the extra traffic driven to Apple.com and the Applestores.

I don't see why Apple couldn't make the new iPhone thinner. My Sony Ericsson W880i is over a year old 3G and is only 9.5mm thick and has great battery life!

As others have stated GPS chips are available integrated to main board and even some of those that aren't measure something like 7mm x 7mm.

I'm torn though- on the one hand sacrificing a couple of mm's depth to accommodate a bigger battery would be great, but I love how slim the iTouch is compared to the iPhone- looks and feels a lot sleeker.

it seems to me that the possible thinner edges and slightly thicker middle are reminiscent of the macbook air.... Maybe Apple is going that direction for all of their products. Will we see MBP's and iMacs with thin edges?

Just a thought.
