I feel the same way. Features that I was really looking forward to (based on the rumors) were:

* OLED screen
* Matte case
* Black bezel / no chrome!
* Front facing camera
* 5 MP (at least) rear camera

Not even *one* of these items showed up in the iPhone GS. I've been using Cycorder for over a year now and it meets my needs just fine for video. I don't need to open my apps a couple miliseconds faster and the current battery more than gets me through the day. The extra storage is nice but nothing that's needed for me on a daily basis.

Really nothing the gets me excited in the least.

Well that's what you get for believing rumors...

LOL, did you really just say "not"? Did some eight year old tell you that was still cool? :D

Also, regarding your signature, if you really think so little of this website that you have to note it in every post you make, why are you here? It's your opinion of course, but kind of ridiculous to voluntarily hang out at a place you think is lame. In fact we might have a good example of irony at play here.

It is my opinion! but nothing more.

The new features aren't too bad. As much as people are slagging it off the compass has a lot of possible uses. I think it will be very handy, especially with the maps integration and the future app uses. Battery life improvements are the processor upgrades are very welcome as well. A real shame they went to no effort to upgrade it cosmetically though. Rather surprising given apple's predilection to slightly but recognisably changing the look of their products through the iterations.

I've had no problem getting current 3G speeds in my not so big city in Alabama.

Yet now it's integrated, gives you audible feedback to make sure it heard you right and it does more than just dial the phone.

Others will disagree. Three more hours on Wi-Fi is nothing to sneeze at when you're on the road and surfing the web.

Not every app or thing you want to do is as zippy as opening texts and you'd notice that speed, not to mention everything just being snappier.

Amazingly, you aren't the one and only member of Apple's target customer base. Shocking, I know.

It eliminates one of the key bitch points people have had and allows for editing right on the phone. It's a pretty nice upgrade.

The point that whizzed over your head wasn't that people who make a living as photographers will be using it. The point is, harping about a 5MP camera vs a 3MP is stupid. You can get better looking photos from a 3MP than you can a 5MP one depending on the lens and sensor each uses. Plus, this one has autofocus, tap to focus, is better in low-light conditions and auto-white correction.

I'm sure there will be a nice update next year. Apple typically does upgrades yearly of stuff like this so big deal. It's going to sell a bunch more iPhones and not because of blind Apple fanboys. A lot of the original (non 3G) users will jump on this and it will bring in even more new customers whether it meets your personal checklist of "wow" features or not. There are enough really nice upgrades for it to be worth a lot of people's while...even many 3G users depending on what they deem to be important in feature sets.

I'm sorry but this is in fact a lackluster update plain and simple. For those still with the 2G or have never owned an iphone, this will be a good thing if they choose to update - you are correct. I was just hoping for more and by "more" I just mean something different. I was never on the bandwagon of design changes and massive new features. I just wanted something "different" and I don't see adding a compass, a recorder, and video as being all that impressive. I'm sorry if you disagree but like I said its great for people who upgrade or have never owned an iphone, but for someone with a 3G, I'll just pass and wait for next year.

still debating if i should upgrade from my 3G to the 3GS. i would only want more storage, faster speed, and longer battery life, but those features are not worth $518 to me. better camera, video recording, compass, and voice control are "cool", but they are not ground breaking.

so this is apple's answer to the smartphone market. i hope the palm pre or a new blackberry will bury the 3GS this year.

i think i'll pass on this one. new iphone = fail for me.

(hopping over to any 4G iphone rumor threads now)

Fail my ass, thats what you think.
Its going to sell like crazy.
If you dont like it dont get one.

this thing won't sell like crazy
everyone willing to buy an iPhone at the 199/299 price point already has
now, if they, the loyal apple customers, want the new iPhone, they have to pay 399/499? nobody will do that. Even a current customer who has a 16gb will have to pay 299 to upgrade to THE ORIGINAL 8GB 3G! not the new 3GS, the 3G

if anything sells, it'll be that $99 3G, and only to customers who don't already have iPhones

they won't draw anyone from verizon with this, nobody with old 3G iPhones will buy it (until they're upgrade eligible)

and since it looks the same, most people won't even know its new.
Apple has shut out everyone with this iteration

the 3GS is going nowhere

LOL you mean the Palm Pre which sold 50 000 units in its first weekend will bury the iphone?

Yeah and people said the iphone 3g won't sell, the original iphone also wasn't supposed to sell.

Great, I forgot how we have to sit through weeks of bitching after every apple presentation.

Somehow its always "the biggest letdown ever!"

WTF were you expecting that was so damn revolutionary?

I agree 100% I thought this was a GREAT WWDC!!! So many surprises I am very impressed. I wish I was in the market for a new iPhone and a new Macbook.

Most people will wait for their contracts to be up.

They're selling to ORIGINAL iPhone owners (and people without iPhones at all).

Anyone who thinks this won't be a huge hit with those 2 groups is blind or in denial.

Another one I agree with you. Really now much more can they change the design? Again I wish I was in the market for a new iPhone, at least I get 3.0 :D

Yeah and people said the iphone 3g won't sell, the original iphone also wasn't supposed to sell.

I agree with the person you qouted in that the $99 iphone will sell like crazy but I think the numbers for this phone will be below those of the 3G, but what do I know ?

Who on earth ever said this ?

The Pre had a limited release. Either due to manufacturing reasons or cynical hype-building on Palm's behalf. As the articles you've linked have stated. Sure it won't bury the iphone, but you keep quoting this number as if it's all that palm could sell. If the supply was there the numbers would be much higher and there wouldn't be waiting lists. But it's very unlikely it would have beaten the iPhone launch which was massively successful.

How did it have a limited release, keep lining up the excuses. You guys shoved this phone down our throats for 6 months but it comes in and sells 50 000. Heck the original iphone sold more than that and it was a 600 dollar phone.

People need to relax NO ONE told you to upgrade to the wack 3G last year. Now you want to be mad at the world because some can upgrade and you can't. I'm actually excited about this one. Better Camera than both phones, auto-focus. . . Faster. You should have waited like the rest of us Original iPhone users. So forget the rest get an iPhone 3GS! ;) (That's a cool line, Kinda)

And if the price is "Too much" look elsewhere for a phone. . . Better yet save your money and keep supporting the recession

so it will look exactley same on outside, but inside will be different wow!!! honestly that wont be enough to get most people to fork over 300 for a faster phone!

only good thing is the video, which with a 3.0 mp camera will still suck! yay i dont feel bad having my 3g for longer! ill just upgrade when im able to!

So thats all you see as a value. A new hardware look. Well your post is pretty much FAIL.

The value added to these new iPhones for the same price with updated internals, OS, SDK.... oh well you can't see that, all you see is the outside look. Your thread = FAIL

How did it have a limited release
There weren't many manufactured/available in stores were there ? This was widely advertised leading up to release. They even limited sales to pre-existing customers first.

keep lining up the excuses.
I'm not making excuses for anyone. Just pointing out that direct comparisons of sales are flawed as neither the iphone or pre opening weekends saturated demand. It was a good few months here before initial iphone demand was satisfied with units as well. The iphone sales could have been much higher initially if the stock was there.

You guys shoved this phone down our throats for 6 months but it comes in and sells 50 000
I did nothing of the sort. But either way reading about something on the internet constitutes having it shoved down your throat ?

Heck the original iphone sold more than that and it was a 600 dollar phone.
It did, but again making direct comparisons based on the numbers sold isn't simply down to demand for either phone. There are other factors in play.

I'm really impressed and excited for the 3.0 software but the new 3GS...Not so much. I really only need the 32GB space, everything else just kinda fell short of my expectations.

Agreed. That's the boat I'm in.

I didn't want to buy a new iPod that would give me the same space. At least now I can have all my music.

Plus - I just bought a car. The TomTom App + Dock will be awesome. Any word on that pricing?

Well I got the white 3G two months ago and it's absolutely spotless in perfect condition still, so I'll just pretend it's the 3GS since they don't make the white 3G anymore and make myself feel better. Though this upgrade is really nothing special.

CNBC news just said the Pre sold out this weekend. Over 100,000 units but I',m looking forward to buying the new 3G S.

And still no zoom...

I still like how they can upgrade the camera and not include a zoom. This is the feature I wish it had the most when using the camera.

32 GB storage would have been enough reason for me to upgrade....

Faster processor and 3-4x loading speeds seals the deal immediately. The speed bump is going to be soooo obvious between the older iphones and the 3Gs that people are going to be really envious.

im not saying it won't sell! but im saying anyone who has been holding back on getting an iphone wont just make the jump now! because there is nothing enticing! i guarantee you the faster speed is not even noticable to the average person!

and the prices are the same so if you wanted one now you could have just gotten one before!

video isn't that big of a selling point! most people don't even use the damn video on their phones! and most phones have video!

im wondering if the phone supports faster 3g speeds! even the battery life for 3g talk is the same, so wth. battery life isn't even that better. It wasn't ment to be a big update so anyone who has a 3g shouldn't be that upset.

I was a bit confused as well. Does it support the 7.2 MBPS speed? Will they release the processor info?
