True. From reading posts it sounds like a lot of people would've preferred a whole new redesign of the phone with no real performance upgrades rather than the incremental upgrades of internal hardware.

I'm ashamed to say I'm one of those people! :D I'm sure if I had a 1st-gen phone, I would want to upgrade, but the differences between the 3G and 3GS are so minor (for my purposes) that I won't bother. I'm not looking to shoot masterpieces with my cellphone camera or video recorder, and the speed is fine right now for the kinds of things I do. The only really attractive new feature to me is the voice control, but considering that I don't like looking like I'm talking to myself in public, I'd probably use it for a few days, then get bored with it.

I, for one, think its a pretty decent upgrade. The ONLY thing that dissappoints me is that it doesn't have the matte back...if it did, that baby would be mine in a heartbeat. Time to retire the 2G.

So here's what I'm going to do now....wait for AT&T to announce its plan pricing, and lastly, Wait to see if current 3g members are able to upgrade at the subsidized price

If current 3g owners can buy the 3gs at the subsidized price, I would assume that the same would happen the next time a new iPhone was released.

If that were the case, I would buy the 3gs now, get a good year of usage out of it, then see what the deal is next time.

so it will look exactley same on outside, but inside will be different wow!!! honestly that wont be enough to get most people to fork over 300 for a faster phone!

only good thing is the video, which with a 3.0 mp camera will still suck! yay i dont feel bad having my 3g for longer! ill just upgrade when im able to!

They've made meaningful improvements and that's a problem for you?

Mike, are you seriously complaining because it's not pretty enough to wear as a necklace pendant?

Oh, I see. You have a 3G and you're so relieved you don't have to upgrade now to look current. As you infer - you're not able to do so now.

I value the performance increase. Being able to play higher bitrate video is most welcomed.

It wasn't fail. The potential customers for the new device are stuck in contracts and can't upgrade. Hence the only people left to attract are new customers and the 3GS will suffice in catering to them

like i said i am a 3g user and this offers nothing new for me. the faster iphone will not be that noticabley faster! probably not the normal human being! and a video and compass are not enough for me to pay 600 or 400 for a new iphone! i have a 3g and am under contract! its a waste of an upgrade for most 3g users. didn't say it wasn't for 2g users, but most people won't go ooh 32gb for 300 thats good!, because those same people would have just gotten the 3g with 16gb.

Thanks for voicing your opinion as fact chief!

Phew . . marketing 101. I don't get it.

Just pointing out that if the 3GS was housed in different externals, a lot of 3G users would want to upgrade. It's obvious though that Apple isn't focused on the 3G user, but new users this time around. I'm happy the 3Gs came out, as gloss said a few posts up
Twice as fast, twice as much storage, same price? Yes please.

Ordered.

All I wanted was video without jailbreaking and front facing camera. I can jailbreak and get video for free.

I'll wait til next year to upgrade phone. 3.0 satisfies me

Massive, massive FAIL!

Speed upgrade = Again, obviously useful but not something most people are gonna struggle to live without!

Battery life = Not massively better, but better all the same.

Upgrade in storage = the best thing about it. Obviously useful.

1mp camera upgrade = Dire! Should be a minimum of 5mp these days!

Video recording = Depends on its quality as to how much of a point there is to this.

Voice Control = Big deal!

Digi compass = WTF! Useful for ramblers/walkers/mountaineers i.e not the majority of people!

All the other 'features' Apple are advertising for the 3GS on their site are coming with the free software 3.0 update!

MASSIVE fail except for 1st gen owners or iPhone newbies! Unfortunate!

That begs the question, would a redesign to encourage 3G owners to upgrade preclude a marketing drive directed at new users? Why not attract both audiences instead of just one?

I love how they talked about messages opening up quicker. If I recall my phone opens texts and stuff pretty quick. I guess some people can't wait that extra 0.33 milliseconds.

I am really looking forward to a tear-down of the 3Gs (what a lame name) to see the technical specs.

Could be interesting, but why, oh why, do you have to double tap the map to reorient it? Should do that in real time.

If I remember correctly, most of these little things were the things people were bitching loudest about, especially voice control, storage, and lack of video....

Apple: Giving what the customers ask for, fail.

Ideally a new redesign would attract new users quicker as well as tempt current owners to upgrade now. I don't understand why Apple did not follow this route this time around, though I suspect that a new redesign will occur when exclusivity ends in order to attract both groups.

I think that when people think map, they think of your standard upright facing north map. Starting always facing north is a good thing IMO for anyone that is used to using a map.

Once you do the double tap it keeps changing to your orientation, so is it really a big deal to double tap once?

I don't understand why people want a 5MP camera with a sensor this small. The amount of grain in the images is unbearable and the amount of image processing required to reduce this makes the images terrible.

It reminds me of the former megapixel wars with standard cameras. If you don't want a DSLR what do you get these days? A small camera with lots of megapixels, a small sensor and worse pictures than cameras produced years ago with half the megapixels.

Oops

11:41 am Can adjust guitar tuning without actually physically changing anything -- nothing can be demoed however, as the hardware accessory isn't communicating with the iPhone.

11:39 am More demo technical difficulties -- trying to show how easy it is to switch between settings on an amp and guitar.

Not sure why people are complaining about the new iPhone. Ok, yes... the name sucks (3gs... really?), but in terms of features imho there's actually more than there was from the original iPhone to iPhone 3G:

iPhone 3G basically got 3G & GPS. That's about it.

iPhone 3Gs got: more RAM, a new Processor, Video, & Voice Control.

*shrugs* I'll be gettin' one. :)

Apple owners are some of the biggest whiners I have ever seen.
They bitch about iPhones being sold at Wal-Mart, they bitch about the rumor of Macs being sold at Wal-Mart when it doesn't concern them, they bitch about new notebooks.

No wonder Apple users get looked upon as snotty stuck up idiots. Half of them are and they ended up on this site.
