If it doesn't have a home button it's not an SE anyway.

Call it the iPhone S. For Steve. Because Steve would want Apple to keep making an iPhone with a home button.

Always keep it as small as possible.

iPhone 15 S.
iPhone 16 S.
iPhone 17 S.
iPhone 18 S.
etc.

The iPhone Mini should not have a home button, and should also always be as small as possible.

The iPhone SE is just not worth it.

You can buy a refurbished iPhone 13 mini 128Go in mint condition for the same price as the current 128GB SE model. Why would you consider the SE instead?

The iPhone SE 1st gen was great. But ever since, it just hasn't been worth it.
You must not have small hands.

The distance from your thumb to the top of the screen, where Control Center is activated, is farther on the 13 mini compared to the SE. Because the top of the screen on the SE does not start at the very top. This makes the SE much more comfortable when you're trying to reach the top of the screen while holding the phone with one hand.

Also, you're comparing a phone with a home button (SE) to a phone without a home button. The SE doesn't require Face ID, which means you can make it so your phone doesn't lock instantly when you put it to sleep. You can make it not lock for 4 hours with Touch ID. Lastly, not everyone wants to have to look at their phone to authenticate stuff.

Perfect phone for those who want to live in 2011 forever.
Too bad Apple is too cheap to add a bigger screen to it. I mean, it does 99% of what people need in a phone, they just can't upsell you on paying for a bigger screen when you have it. So Apple really needs to get its head out of 2011 by now.

The mini was discontinued because it didn't sell well enough but you can still buy a new one from Apple and other places for as little as $629 retail (13 mini).
If you can still buy a new one from Apple, then it wasn't discontinued.

Discontinued: (of a product) no longer available or produced.

It [iPhone 13 mini] just wasn't updated.

Where can I buy a refurbished iPhone 13 mini in mint condition for $150?

(Yes, I know you said 128GB SE, but some kids just need a basic phone and 64GB will do)

With ever increasing chip capabilities it likely makes no sense to have an SE product when an older model of a highly capable iPhone is available.

Exactly if the SE doesn't have Touch in some form, why wouldn't you get one of the many others with FaceID. I just want the SE+ they mentioned in the very beginning. Something similar to an 8+

No iPhone xr se with USB c .. i stick with this new infinix pro 30 . ain’t paying iPhone 15 only usb c .. As desperate xr upgrade we moved to infinix as no iPhone match with my price and worthiness.

Technically still available, at least until September. Would be awesome to see them keep it around another year and instead oust the standard 6.1” iPhone 13. But not holding my breath for that.
Apple kept the 12 and 12 mini when iPhone 13 dropped but ditched the 12 mini when 14 dropped.

If Apple follows this strategy for its line-up, then 13 mini will be ousted when iPhones 15 launch.

I see both iPhones 12 and 13 mini (and iPhones 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max) getting the boot when the iPhones 15 line-up is revealed.

Standard 13 and 14 and 14 Plus get to stay though.

I don't even think the current iPhone SE support 3.45 GHz 5G on AT&T, and it doesn't support mmWave, so it's pointless in a lot of places that only have that available as a high-speed form of 5G.

If Apple brought back the "plus" phones, that had the best commercially available displays ever made, I'd buy instantly. Otherwise I'll just stick with my SE, the only phone left with non schizo-inducing LCD. Think OLED/PWM isn't schizo-inducing? Look around at the OLED screeners. Just look at them.

Yep, and this is why it is unlikely the 13 Mini gets another year.

Still, a hypothetical lineup where the 13 Mini stays instead of the 13 would be compelling for its lack of overlap since the 13 and 14 models share the same processor.

iPhone Mini - $599
iPhone - $699
iPhone Plus - $799

Sure, the Mini sells in small numbers, but the bottom rung legacy phone does as well. Why not keep the uniquely sized Mini around for another year at the same price rather than giving up another $100 of margin on the 13? Just some food for thought. As I say, I don’t believe this will happen, but it does at least present an interesting business case to ponder.

The iPhone SE is used for a lot of prepaid carriers. You can get a new, unused iPhone SE 2022 for $149.99 right now on many prepaid carriers. It’s basically a catch-all, bringing more and more users into the Apple ecosystem. It’s a very important device, IMO.

Nobody should expect the SE to be on a yearly refresh cycle. I wouldn't even expect it to be on a two-year cycle. And the current phone with an A15 chip in it is a beast and a bargain even today. Even better if you decide to pick up a used or refurbished one, which can be had for under $300 fairly easily. That gets you performance comparable to flagship Android phones as far as the chip.

Funny how an SE conversation has transformed into a mini one. These are two different products with contrasting goals. I am a happy mini user and satisfied with its capabilities without SE's compromises, large size and weight for my liking. Long story short, Apple should try to make every slice of their user base happy. SE is great for some and mini is great for others.

You can also get certified refurbished minis from Apple with new battery, new outer shell, same as new 1 year warranty, etc. for as little as $439 (availability varies).
The market for an iPhone-13-mini-type phone is a lot different when it is not competing against a similarly small and budget-oriented iPhone SE based on the iPhone 8 design.
