Nobody should expect the SE to be on a yearly refresh cycle. I wouldn't even expect it to be on a two-year cycle. And the current phone with an A15 chip in it is a beast and a bargain even today. Even better if you decide to pick up a used or refurbished one, which can be had for under $300 fairly easily. That gets you performance comparable to flagship Android phones as far as the chip.
The biggest problem with it, of course, is the huge forehead and chin, coupled with the increasingly obsolete and unsightly home button.

Why is the home button “increasingly obsolete”? (The rest is opinion anyway)
Look at the devices Apple has released over the past five years -- especially the past two years. Notice a pattern regarding the presence or absence of a home button? The reason is that it takes screen real estate while being unnecessary functionally. Gestures on full-screen devices accomplish the same thing.

Apple released a device with the home button last year (and is actively selling it), so surely it can't meet any reasonable definition of "obsolete"!

Yes, that is why I said "increasingly obsolete." They released ONE device with a home button last year. The number of devices they release with such a button has diminished year by year. I expect that they won't be releasing another such device again. And that brings up the issue of what the next iteration of the SE will look like and why people are mentioning the mini. It would make sense for Apple to modify the 13 mini in a year or two, soup it up with a new chip, and market it as the new SE.

Fair enough, though (as I'm sure you're aware) there are reasons folks prefer the home button which i won't rehash. I think people are mentioning the Mini for no reason other than wishful thinking – I haven't seen any rumors that Apple is considering using the Mini chassis for the SE (as opposed to using the XR or something else).

I haven't seen any rumors about the next SE either, which makes sense in how it seems to be a ways off. But I and many others in this thread seem to want to the 13 mini to serve as the design basis of it. IMO it does make sense as a design choice.

What we need is an iPhone SE+.

Home button AND big screen, single small camera, no idiotic notch. And if Apple REALLY wants to do the right thing, they'll put a headphone jack on it.
To get the phone you want, I think you may have to locate a time machine -- and I don't mean the program on your Mac.

Where can I buy a refurbished iPhone 13 mini in mint condition for $150?

(Yes, I know you said 128GB SE, but some kids just need a basic phone and 64GB will do)

I said 128 because the iPhone 13 doesn't sell in 64GB, not by choice.
Also, I'm comparing prices on Apple Store. Don't know what this offer is or whether it comes with a plan.

Simple. The LCD screen. It does not cause eye discomfort and headaches like Apple's OLED screens.
I think the screen is actually what's make the iPhone 12/13 much better. Bigger screen, higher resolution, better contrast, better brightness, better colour gamut, etc.

But OK, everyone is entitled to his own opinion, but we can safely assume that the vast majority of people would prefer the screen of an iPhone 13 over the one of the SE.

The iPhone SE is used for a lot of prepaid carriers. You can get a new, unused iPhone SE 2022 for $149.99 right now on many prepaid carriers. It’s basically a catch-all, bringing more and more users into the Apple ecosystem. It’s a very important device, IMO.
I'm not familiar with those carriers, but I assume you have to go with that carrier and have a plan with them, right? It's not just "get the iPhone for $150 and leave the next day for free" or is it?

I love the SE. It's small, simple, has an unobtrusive camera lens, and it does everything I need a phone to do--communicate with others. Most of all, it's affordable. That's all I want.
Sorry, but it's very old tech and it's embarrassing to have it around today 😏

You must not have small hands.

The distance from your thumb to the top of the screen, where Control Center is activated, is farther on the 13 mini compared to the SE. Because the top of the screen on the SE does not start at the very top. This makes the SE much more comfortable when you're trying to reach the top of the screen while holding the phone with one hand.

Also, you're comparing a phone with a home button (SE) to a phone without a home button. The SE doesn't require Face ID, which means you can make it so your phone doesn't lock instantly when you put it to sleep. You can make it not lock for 4 hours with Touch ID. Lastly, not everyone wants to have to look at their phone to authenticate stuff.
My elderly mother has an 11 pro and she doesn't have to use the Face ID, the phone is just unlocked, simple 😊

An iPhone wouldn't be of great use without a SIM card from a Carrier 😊

That one hand scenario is not realistic. I handle pro Max with one hand, no problem.
I don’t grasp it but hold it comfortably, so it lies more or less on my finger tips and that gives me enough room to reach the whole screen with my thumb. Everyone does it like this, it’s just not an issue and people with smaller hands like big screens too.

The "catch" is that those phones are carrier locked. The day before the SE 2022 was announced, I picked up the SE 2 from my carrier for $199. I've been using it with my carrier ($35 a month, no contract, w/unlimited talk and text, 10GB LTE data, unlimited data at a lower speed after that), but I could've bought it and never activated it for service (and use it as an iPod Touch Pro).
