As a developer I never bothered implementing 3D Touch as most of my apps run on the iPad. It was a good idea but gestures were difficult to discover so it didn’t become a key feature of iPhones.
I still use my Xs and I sometimes use it but I won’t really miss it when I’ll upgrade to a future iPhone.

Shouldn't this allow them to put a slightly larger battery in there?

The main thing I miss between 3DT and Haptic is the ability to select text while typing; that was super handy.

I’ll miss 3D Touch. Long press introduces a delay 3D doesn’t require.
Long press is the bane of my existence. Slight exaggeration, but it really irks me how much it slows me down. It would be fine if it only had to be done occasionally, but it doesn’t, it has to be done constantly for basic common things. 3D Touch was a better solution by orders of magnitude.

Apple first removed 3D Touch from the iPhone XR in 2018, replacing it with Haptic Touch. The feature was then rolled out to the entire 2019 iPhone lineup, and now, added to the iPhone SE.

Haptic Touch is similar to 3D Touch and offers a lot of the same functionality, but it is not pressure sensitive so there are no longer multiple functions for each press, such as the "Peek and Pop" gestures that were possible with 3D Touch.

Haptic Touch is more like a long press or a press and hold with haptic feedback, and like 3D Touch, it works throughout the iOS operating system. It can be used by pressing in a relevant location until a small haptic pop is felt under the finger and a secondary menu pops up, with content varying based on where the feature is used.

For those coming to an iPhone SE from an older phone with 3D Touch, the transition to Haptic Touch will feel unfamiliar at first because it's slower than the 3D Touch gestures, but because it ultimately works in the same way, most users should become accustomed to it quickly.

Eliminating 3D Touch in favor of Haptic Touch across the iPhone lineup allows Apple to provide a similar interface experience for all iPhone and iPad models. For more on how Haptic Touch works and where it can be used, make sure to check out our Haptic Touch guide.

I hate haptic touch compared to 3D touch. It's a difference between long tap (haptic) and analog controls (3D). Not to mention, the geniuses at Apple still haven't added a way to control the cursor from the more obscure number-only keyboard. There is no spacebar to long press. I have sent feedback, but I suspect it fell on deaf ears.

Full functionality of 3D touch is one of the reasons my X is on 12.4.1 permanently. Unfortunately when I upgrade to the 6.1 12 Pro I'll have to deal with the loss of it but I've been using long press on the iPad so I'll manage..

Before I switched to the 11 Pro, I really regretted updating my X to 13.anything. Those who knew how to use 3D touch lost functionality at that point.

As I stated in another reply, the long touch also doesn't work on number-only iOS keyboards where there is no spacebar. I can complain all day long, but the nonsensical, less-useful haptic touch has won.

Can someone explain why 3D Touch is so beloved? I don't "miss" it at all -- haptic touch pretty much does everything 3D Touch did.

No, it doesn't. Imagine using a Playstation or XBox controller, where pushing the controller just a little bit made the character walk a tad faster. The more you pushed it, the faster your character went. Analog.

Haptic touch would mean the position of your analog controller is irrelevant. Pushing the controller in any direction, regardless of how far you pressed it, would always start the character out slow. Holding it in the direction would eventually speed up your character.

Apple only promoted peek and pop, but 3D touch has insanely more levels of pressure detection than that.

I really can only remember long-pressing bringing up magnifying glasses when correcting text. What else did it use to do?

The replies here show the general problem with 3D touch marketing. The people who figured it out fully understood its benefits and distinction from a long tap. Those who never figured it out are clueless as to how they differ.

And don't forget that stupidly long UI animation that acts like you 3D touched it really slowly.

I don’t think it actually is/was that beloved, aside from some here and elsewhere that are tech savvy and found it useful. The fact that it was dropped from the hardware is a pretty good indication Apple knows this and acted accordingly to eliminate it. I love/d it but whenever I showed it to someone who wasn’t aware of, that person never, ever, showed any sign of interest. Occasionally a few responded with something along the line of, “Oh that is why my phone was doing that weird thing I didn’t understand and therefore didn’t like.” My wife straight up told me she will never use it.

I have an iPhone 8 Plus (with 3D Touch) and a 2018 iPad 6th, I really miss 3D Touch when I use my iPad.

I too have an iPhone 8 (non-plus) and I love 3D Touch. What I wish Apple would have done is NOT implement or force us older iPhone users to use Haptic Touch as it screws up selection and insertion of text all over the system and also within Applications (including Apple's). Only Notes uses 3D Touch correctly without screwing up trying to invoke Haptic Touch.
