Told you so!
I always said 3D-Touch or Force-Touch was over-complicating things!
Building in a force-sensor that cover the whole screen, and thus adding weight and cost, for the sole purpose of adding a "right-click" feature, was stupid. It could just as easily be done with a slightly longer press. Just as Apple now obviously have realized.
(Yes; I do know that 3D-touch could discriminate between many different pressures, but that was never used in any meaningful way. 3D-touch never grew into anything but a two-function feature. Good riddance!

I always thought 3D Touch was an expensive and over-engineered solution to a question nobody asked.

I think Apple themselves realized this when they were able to incorporate the same functionality with a long press on hardware that didn't have 3D Touch capability.

But...but...but...but.... 3D touch was essential! So essential and innovative and cool that it needed a special vibrations motor so you can really "feel going in" (crap I suppose in hindsight)....and...and....and...wait for it....there was no more room for the headphone jack! (that took the same "courage" as the D-Day landings)

Anyone remember that? The steamed pile of crap they served us to eliminate the jack and buy crappy perishable airpods?

It was a good feature, but I didn't use it as much as it frustrated me that it wasn't consistent between my iPhone and the iPad. So if they weren't going to ever add it to the iPad then I think this made sense.

Elimination of 3DT is a real loss as far as I'm concerned. Looong press is not a substitute.

What I take issue with in this post is the reference to Airpods. Nobody was suggesting anybody buy airpods, instead of either:
1. using the dongle and continue to use your wired headsets or,
2. buying some other (other than Apple) crappy brand of perishable generic bluetooth headsets

Am I the only one who turns on the flashlight or camera by mistake because of the dumb implementation of haptic touch?

You're not the only one. Haptic touch essentially implements "unintended input" as a feature. 3D Touch was the direct opposite of unintended input.

With the headphone jack Apple did it early as they always do and this causes people to get their undies in a bunch. Now other brands have done it but no one notices or cares.

When it comes to 3D touch it was a failed experiment. Yes some people who are techies and live in these forums will miss 3D touch but that's a very small part of the iPhone customer base. The average iPhone user never even knew 3D touch existed and perhaps that's part of the problem. It wasn't something most users just came across even by accident and Apple didn't market it properly. Perhaps they should have had some pop up reminding users of it and what they could do. Many apps didn't have very good 3D touch integration and if they did anything it was gimmicky. In the end it wasn't worth the added bulk and cost to continue.

Agreed that long press doesn't have all the utility but I think it's like Magsafe... Dead (I really miss that one BTW)

Bluetooth is the future. After using AirPods and other Bluetooth earphones I can't go back to wires. I don't mind wires if I'm sitting in a recliner listening with huge over the ear headphones but if I'm moving or doing something no way. 1895 called and they wanted their wires back 😂

Here's the thing. With the first mainstream (non-budget model) iPhone that Apple released that removed 3D Touch last year, they simultaneously also released the first iPhone "Pro". As far as I'm concerned, the low uptake of 3D Touch combined with the impassioned minority who uses it frequently, suggests that it is a "pro" feature. The iPhone 11 Pro should have included 3D Touch regardless of the cost difference.

The point of a "pro" model is not to save cost, reduce components, or lower the price. The purpose is to offer a higher-end option that might come with a higher price tag, but also deliver all the features possible for those who really want or need them. 3D Touch could have, and perhaps should have been left off of the iPhone 11 -- but it should have been included in the iPhone 11 Pro, full stop. There's no reason for the first "pro" model to have dropped one of the most beloved pro features after Apple has managed to include it in every mainstream model since 2016 including the cheapest iPhone 6s, then drop it from their "Pro" models that are no less expensive than the similarly spec'd XS and X models that came before them.

You really think people aren’t buying the iPhone because of it doesn’t have 3D Touch LOL. I think like most people you feel that just because you like or don’t like something or feel someway about something that everyone else must feel the same way. Just because you don’t buy the new iPhone because it doesn’t have 3D Touch does it mean other people won’t. There are so many other factors involved and iPhone sales. Sure the pro model is about including all the features but if there’s a feature that isn’t wanted or used but adds extra buck and cost there’s no point in putting it in there. I loved 3D Touch but it died because people never adopted it plain and simple.

I didn’t say that, and you completely missed the point.

Regardless, the iPhone comes with a number of components that some people don’t use. I don’t see them dropping the third lens camera that most people don’t even know how to access, nor the UWB radio that only provides enhanced location awareness for AirDrop and AirTags that may or may not ever surface.

I’ll reiterate the point. The purpose of the Pro model is to include the best hardware that they can to meet everyone’s needs. It’s not the mainstream model anymore and it shouldn’t have features cut to save Apple an extra buck. At $1249, we’re paying handsomely for the best hardware that affords all the capabilities out there. For everyone else there’s the iPhone 11 and SE.

So even if you don’t want 3D Touch, no one would be forcing the hardware on you. But if someone is willing to pay a bit more for any "pro" feature — be it a better camera, OLED display, or 3D Touch — the Pro model should fulfill that demand, and it was hypocritical of Apple to remove 3D Touch from the only phone they’ve ever released with the "Pro" moniker.

I guess you completely missed the point where I said it makes the phone have more bulk? I’m pretty sure everyone knows how to use all the cameras. Comparing 3D Touch to the camera is just silly.

How come we cannot long press or 3D Touch or haptic touch or whatever it’s called on the lock screen anymore? Was this a function of 3D Touch only?

A few disagree and found 3dt to be useful, however it is gone.

I heard a YouTuber say this and I'll repeat it here,

The iPhone 6 design started without 3D Touch and is also ending without 3D Touch.

Rip.

I really really loved 3D touch.. shame really.

Also can't believe my iPhone X has all the 3D touch hardware and sensors, yet the functionality has been forced off my phone :(
I totally agree. So much so, that I have stuck with IOS12 on my iPhone XS Max and refuse to update because it will effectively “switch off” my 3D Touch sensor!

Haptic press is not as good as 3DT, but one gets used to it. The additional functionality over two iOS releases plus security updates makes it worthwhile to update.
