New iPhone SE Supports Haptic Touch, With 3D Touch Now Officially Eliminated From Apple's iPhone Lineup

If anyone wants the latest iPhone with 3D Touch while they still have the chance, Best Buy has a great deal on the XS starting at $699.

Unless you're running iOS 12 or earlier, it won't matter.

ok, why are so many people saying that 3d touch has been removed from models that have the 3d touch hardware?.. did you guys check your settings?...

Starting with iOS 13, devices with 3D Touch hardware were still limited. Wallpaper i had since the 6S (wallpaper that would literally change position based on how much pressure I exerted) no longer animated based on precision, but solely on long tap. That means, it animated all the way when tapped and held, and reverted back when I let go. Prior to that, I could suspend the animation mid way based on pressure alone. While that example is more about fun than anything else, it was a prime example of the removing of functionality come iOS 13.

One of the most poorly-handled features by Apple. They spent time and money developing and releasing it, then didn’t support or promote it properly. They promised those of us who love it that they had big plans for it — that was clearly a lie.

I’m happily still running on 12.4 with full 3D Touch functionality. Apple purposefully nerfed the feature on iOS13 because haptic touch sucks in comparison.

Wondering when Apple’s patent expires if more android makers build it into their displays. It’s just so much more pleasant to use.

Also it’s weird the dimensions of the SE are identical to the 8. You’d figure they would put in a bigger battery without the 3D Touch layer.

Fine with me. Always seemed gimmicky and pointless. I think the biggest thing it ever did for me was make controlling Fallout Shelter harder 😂

I don’t really understand why Haptic Touch is a ‘feature’. I mean it’s basically the touch screen equivalent of a right (or secondary) mouse click with a vibrate added...

On a Windows PC, you long press for a context menu... this is basically same thing.

At least 3D Touch used specialized hardware.

While 6s/7/8 users might miss this (which is probably a small percentage to begin with), other users coming from the older SE or iPhone 6, or those coming from Android won't even notice. I'm sure Apple has the data of how so few people used 3D touch, thus their decision to scrap it in lieu of larger battery. Seems like a good decision imo.

I mean if Android didn't even copy the feature, it's probably not that popular... 😅

You're right, it doesn't make sense from a logic standpoint, but it's absolutely correct. The reason they killed 3D touch is because they couldn't get it Work on iPad models

Do you have a source for this? Because I think there’s multiple reasons why Apple deleted 3D Touch, part of its cost savings, Part of it being it allowed for a larger battery with the removal of the 3D Touch module. I don’t think I’ve ever heard any type of explanation that 3D Touch was removed because they couldn’t get to work on the iPad‘. I don’t believe Apple ever Had intentions to utilize 3D Touch on the iPad displays.

3D Touch is great and was ahead of its time. Now that they have created the clear distinction between iOS and iPadOS, it should have been its time to shine in the pro line (to start with).

With the old SE I never had 3D touch, never felt I was missing something. The new SE just adds some haptic vibration to the same press-and-hold function. Hopefully it's at least as quick as with the old SE.

Full functionality of 3D touch is one of the reasons my X is on 12.4.1 permanently. Unfortunately when I upgrade to the 6.1 12 Pro I'll have to deal with the loss of it but I've been using long press on the iPad so I'll manage..
Yep I’ve kept my 7 on 12.4.1 for this reason. They ruined it on iOS 13 for the devices with the hardware.
I never thought I would miss it on my 11 Pro but I do ever so slightly, still use my 7 some days

Haptic touch, and the user interface that resulted from the elimination of 3D touch is a distinct downgrade from how 3D touch worked. Sad.
100% like they didn’t need to destroy the software on the devices with actual hardware support

I loved 3D Touch, but don't miss it on my 11 Pro like I thought I would
Absolutely same exper for me. I was so sure it would annoy me missing 3D, but it is actually working quite well for me without it and I barely think about it.
But it definitely was a unique and beautiful feature.

Also can't believe my iPhone X has all the 3D touch hardware and sensors, yet its been forced off my phone :(
I can accept Apple moving to the more ‘universal’ (lesser and cheaper) Haptic Touch in later models but to wilfully cripple 3D Touch via iOS in models with the hardware, is really really shoddy 😤

Sadly I was “encouraged” to upgrade to ios13 (via Apple Store) without knowing in advance it would purge my X of an elegant and practical feature I used and really liked.

I will always miss this feature. Keyboard text selection—and text selection in general—has certainly gone downhill on iOS since it’s removal.

There were a lot of features tied to 3D Touch that allowed me to be faster at more complex tasks. I‘m worried we’ll never get that back.

I completely agree. The advanced text selection is what makes my iPhone X work well as a 'Pro' device, unlike any of the actual iPhone 11 'Pro' models. As much as I want to upgrade it would be a step back for me at this point in terms of productivity.

I don't take photos with my phone for a living. I communicate and write text as a professional a hell of a lot more.

Apple should rather get rid of the notch or their super confusing product lineup (especially MacBooks and iPhones) instead of 3D touch. It is super convenient and makes touch interactions more efficient and faster tbh ...

Won’t budge from my 8 until the software updates stop coming (which I could see them cutting out iPhones with 3D Touch so they won’t have to support it). This may be the first time I stick with an old iOS version for a feature because the text selection is horrible without 3D Touch. Yes you can highlight words but it is so much more cumbersome for people with small hands.

Am I the only one who turns on the flashlight or camera by mistake because of the dumb implementation of haptic touch?
