Still wish we at least had the option for Flash on the phone. It's not the real internet if you can't see half the sites... and cmon.. flash videos are just as fun as Youtube! ehh... Battery life we're all used to phones with none anyways.. I want flash!

disclaimer: i have no first hand knowledge.

flash will be available for the iphone by the end of the year. if you look at what apple is doing, or more accurately what they're not doing -- they're basically shutting out anything outside their control -- no flash, no sdk, no additional plug-ins.

they're doing this, i believe, because of the massive scale of the iphone and the already large number of new variables apple is dealing with:
  • first time in a long time working with a partner like at&t
  • totally new market, never tried before and far more critical than an ipod
  • the device itself has so many potential points of failure compared to the ipod (sensors, touchscreen, wifi chip, cell chip, etc...
  • the ipod got a bit of a stealth release "apple was doomed" back then so it got some play in the tech/geek press and a bit in the mainstream, but nothing like the hype for iphone. this device will launch as perhaps the most scrutinized piece of technology in history.

once the phone launches and apple works out the kinks we'll start to see things like flash and the SDK... though with flash keep in mind i have visited some sites that will bring a dual 2.0 ghz G5 to its knees. i'm sure the iphone will choke on those and kill the battery life.

Good Point. I'm just waiting for revision 2. My friend's brother (who works for ipod division and is testing on iphone now) says it'll be worth the wait. (I don't know how much he really knows...but I was planning on waiting anyways - as I am a poor graduate  )

It will be interesting to see how this all goes in the next few years.

can you read/write comments on YouTube with iPhone/AppleTV? a lot of the comments that members write really make YouTube one of the most disgusting internet sites... catering to idiot 12 year olds.... totally...

Combine this with myspace and you have the ultimate banes of the internet on your phone, a young teen's wet dream.

Ah, I want it so bad.

YouTube on a phone makes so much sense. Even more sense than 30 minute clips and/or movies...

I wonder what the practical limit will be for length of clips without getting a lot of buffering and timeouts. Thirty seconds? A minute?

TV webisodes are a natural extension. I hope more shows do them this fall.

A decent ad....think the person who uploaded the YT video got paid because they used it? :)

No. The YouTube user license agreement states that they can distribute your videos through any media channels they see fit without need to pay royalties.

Check it out here.

Perfect way for Video Bloggers to get on phones.

Whoa! What a concise mouthfull of potential in the above sentence.

This could create a whole new category: interactive video blogging-- to/from your iPhone.

Or, maybe a new name for a new category: "Phlogging" anyone?

Not much is known about the iPhone camera, but I assume it can taks short video clips (limited by available memory), then post them to a blog...

YouTube Doesn't Respect Orientation ... ?

Interesting to note: on every other iPhone commercial showing off the multimedia capability of the phone, the application in question responds to the orientation of the device (portrait -vs- landscape). But if you watch this commercial, the YouTube application starts up with a landscape orientation by itself, and the user rotates the phone to view it.

I wonder why.... Prior rumors were that Apple was in talks with YouTube to convince them to provide their content via H.264 encoding for the iPhone. So you'd think that resizing the viewer (to switch between the two orientations) would just need to be done in software on the phone itself. Maybe it's a bit of a rush job?

Just random musings.

No, even regular video viewing on iPhone requires the iPhone be in landscape mode. Look at the first TV ad, for instance:
http://www.apple.com/iphone/ads/ad1/

As you can see, as soon as the video starts playing, it is in landscape.

i did a quick search on youtube. the clip appears to be of Tyson the skateboarding dog posted last year by "shelleyladd", though the name on the profile is Tyson and the age is 32. I'm a novice you-tuber: I'm sure many on the forum can check the information and better interpret the findings.

In my opinion this is the most sell-out thing Apple has ever done. What is the point of YouTube? I know the philosophy, but the actuality falls well short. Apple: Get films on iTunes in the UK and stop messing around with triviality. Then again I guess this YouTube stuff will appeal to business men of the kind that sit playing solitaire all day long.

A YouTube video showing a camcorder recording of a PVR recording of an iPhone ad demonstrating YouTube on the iPhone.

The Apple address of "1, Infinite Loop" has never been more relevant. :D

Just had to give props for this. It really is amazing how much technology and 21st century thinking is happening inside that little clip.

a456, I couldn't agree more. The iPhone hype is starting to get on my nerves a bit, and while this is neat, does anyone honestly thing this is a selling point of the phone?

I find it hard to believe that someone thought, "I wasn't going to get an iPhone, but now that I can watch youtube on it, I most certainly will!".

Youtube is neat for uploading videos to share with your friends and family and sometimes is a fun time waster for a few minutes, but most stuff on youtube is crap or illegal.

I think they would be better off adding more content to iTunes and going international. I am in the US, and I'll say this, the chances of me getting an iPhone are slim to none. Yeah, I'd like one, but I ain't paying that price or canceling my current contract early.

But, if I could rent movies/tv shows on iTunes and there were even more TV shows/movies available, I'd probably upgrade to a new iPod and get an AppleTV today. It'd also be nice to rent the shows from the AppleTV.

Personally, they could have used a better video than the skateboarding dog.

How about El Chombo's Chacarron? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=njrmL1y3ul8

How about Aries Spears doing his impersonation rap medley?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rP3qL4UG1TI

Or the beatboxing flute player?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=clcza815sao

Or the David Blane Street Magic spoof?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PGrTvNzGCZE

:)

please tell me the first two are supposed to be funny because they're mocking similar serious videos? the third one's got a darn talented musician, evoking Fatboy Slim before he gets to his tv-themed riff. Nice. And the Magic spoof, well, yeah, that's worth watching.

Signed: NOT a ten year old idiot.

I guess the HSDPA version of the iPhone will let you post videos to youtube that you take with the camera!
