In my opinion this is the most sell-out thing Apple has ever done. What is the point of YouTube? I know the philosophy, but the actuality falls well short. Apple: Get films on iTunes in the UK and stop messing around with triviality. Then again I guess this YouTube stuff will appeal to business men of the kind that sit playing solitaire all day long.

rubbish.

youtube is social media - that is what the web today is all about.

don't forget that youtube was voted the invention of the year by TIME in 2006.

you want Apple to pass this up this 'free' feature so it can sell a few videos to you in the UK? now THAT would be selling out.

Yup, if you want to get paid, you use Google Video instead.

well, google own youtube and they are in the process of trying to monetise it...

Couple of issues:

1. Only "original content" - meaning nothing of any interest, none of the cool stuff. Plus, what happens if YouTube gets taken down due to copyright concerns?

2. Probably going to have to pay out the butt to access that sort of content anywhere but at your home wireless hub (and maybe the bookstore).

iPhone the first major flop for Apple this decade.

iPhone the first major flop for Apple this decade.

Hey look everyone, it's Steve Balmer.

Hey, can we quote you on that, even after Apple sells it's 10th million iPhone?

So I guess all the tech analysts are wrong then.

Very interesting. The recent iPhone ads have actually been very, very good. I only wish more Mac ads would be as good.

Different Adds for different targets.
The Mac Adds need to balance the good features of a Mac. For people to want it, and the Bad features of the PC to want to make people stray away from the status quo. So it is the Bumbling PC vs. the Cool and Collected Mac.

The iPod/iTunes is already the market leader and its adds are designed to make people with iPods to like them even more. Or get an upgrade to a newer hipper version. No need to talk about the competiors because you risk getting people interested in what the competitor is doing. It is about feeling good with your product and if you don't have it you should feel good like everyone else with it.

The iPhone adds are mostly informational and demostrative. The iPhone is Unique in its market as a consumer smart phone. Unlike the others which are Buisness Smart Phones, or Consumer Normal Phones. People know what is on their current phones and shoing off the iPhone and what it can do will make them realize that the iPhone is a better product, then their current phone. So they will be naturally interested and if they are going to change plans the iPhone will require at least a look.

Still wish we at least had the option for Flash on the phone. It's not the real internet if you can't see half the sites... and cmon.. flash videos are just as fun as Youtube!
Exactly, bring me homestarrunner.com on the iPhone and i'd be much happier than youtube crap.

Seems like a stupid ad... then again, I havent really been liking these new iPhone ads, they are kinda annoying. That music is terrible! At least the switch ads had decent music.

It's interesting how different people's opinion can be...I love these ads, and I really like the music. I didn't think it was possible for a commercial to make me want the iPhone any more than I already did, but these commercials have done just that.

iTunes Store

I think I know the answer to my question already, (I think the answer is no) but I'll ask anyways....

Does the iPhone have a way to directly access the iTunes store from the phone ? (when connected via WiFi or EDGE). It would really increase impulse buying I think. Just imagine I am walking through a store and hear a song I like, I could go hmm I like that, click on the iTunes store and bling, I'm groovin' to my new tunes. or another example, I'm sitting at the airport an hour early and don't want to pull out my laptop (or maybe one of the hundreds of other reasons I may not have a laptop with me.) I could pull out my iPhone, buy some songs, or a movie or two for the flight. Then when I get home and "synch" with iTunes on my computer it would copy my newly purchased content into my Computer's iTunes library.

This would be the death of many peoples wallets (and would certainly shrink mine).

More on topic, it would also be great if you could download youtube videos directly onto the iPhone...

Side Note: I hope the Google Video site works on the iPhone (even if just in the browser) I actually prefer it to YouTube. even if you can't watch the movie right there (No Flash support in iPhone I believe) Google Video often has a download for iPod/PSP link where you can download an .mp4/h.264 version of the video

That would be pretty nice... especially if you could preview content as well...

Can't even do that (technically) on a computer... doubt that will be possible.:(

iPhone the first major flop for Apple this decade.

1. (sarcasm) Yes, because if YouTube gets pulled, then every computer with a web browser in the World will be sued for looking at the site. The browsers will then cease to function. (/sarcasm)

2. So what happened to a 'one contract for everyone' agreement? Like, you know, the 'One OS for everyone' idea, and the 'One price for every song' idea and so on. Surely there won't be pay-as-you-go for using EDGE? Surely?

iPhone simply will not flop. Keep the faith.

A mobile iTMS would be fantastic. Not sure if it would be any more of a drain to one's wallet than the compulsive purchased made via computer (like I do  ), and I'd imagine that Apple would keep AT&T from finding a way to charge you for the downloads. How long would it take to download a 1.5GB movie via EDGE?

cjewby, actually you can. If you're using Safari on a Mac, open up your activity window (Window/Activity). Click on the arrow to the left of the site you are viewing. You will see a long list of every CSS, Javascript, image, ad, etc. that that page is loading. On one, you will see it have something like "http://xxx.xxx.youtube.get_video.xxx.xxxx" (where the "x"s represent different letters depending on what you are viewing). But basically, anything that has the " . . . get_video . . ." is what you are looking for. Now all you have to do is double-click on this address and it will start downloading. Once it finishes, change the name to "you_tube.flv" (or anything you want to, not just "you_tube") but it must have the ".flv" extension at the end. Now all you have to do is play this in any FLV player (I use flvThing) and there you have it. A downloaded YouTube video, anytime you want to play it. Pretty cool, huh?

sorry but this YT thing for the iPhone is really not a big selling point for me. it cool you can do that but really the only use is if your really bored and watched all of your movies and tv shows on your iPhone.

disclaimer: i have no first hand knowledge.

flash will be available for the iphone by the end of the year. if you look at what apple is doing, or more accurately what they're not doing -- they're basically shutting out anything outside their control -- no flash, no sdk, no additional plug-ins.

I have a theory. And it goes with the whole YouTube QT thing. First, YouTube is now going to put it's whole library in h.264. Apple has gotten them to do it. The AppleTV is h.264 YouTube as well. Pretty soon, all YouTube will be QT. No more flash. Apple's QT is a complete competitor for Flash. Not just as video, but as interface design as well. There is ZERO flash on the Apple website. None. Anything cool that you think is flash, is actually QT. My guess is Apple would like to be where flash is. So, they won't support flash. BUT - the next update to QT, possibly around June 29, will support current flash playback. They may also introduce an app to more easily create interactive QT content. This is their plan imho. To go head to head with flash. They are slowly and surely taking out many of Adobe's apps. My guess is they don't trust Adobe and Adobe doesn't trust them. With the whole FCP and Premiere bad blood, and now Aperture and Lightroom you've got to wonder. The two are actually more in competition than Apple and MS.

I think you can turn on flash playback capabilities in the current release of QuickTime For Mac OS X, not sure about windows). It's not on by default, and I'm not sure how well it does, but it is there.
I use the Flash Standalone player for most flash stuff local to my computer, or VLC (videolan.org)

I'm not sure how the Mac OS X is implemented on the iPhone, and for that matter how QuickTime is implemented, but if flash can work on the Computer version of QuickTime, couldn't it also work on the iPhone ?

I browse with plug-ins and Java disabled because Flash banners are extremely annoying and I haven't seen anything require Java in over 4 years now.

I can use Apple's website with no problem, except for the videos and QT VR pictures since they require QuickTime. Most of the website uses web standards (XHTML, CSS, Javascript), like a real web site should be. No plug-ins should still give you access to the navigation and the content.

cjewby, actually you can.

Yeah I know, that's why I said " you can't (technically)" lol...
Still doubt that if they don't openly support it now, that they would on the phone.

It is very cool though.. i enjoy it. Would be nice on the phone as well.. Anything to not have to buy edge service - wifi FTW

that makes sense... but why would they have pushed so much for the cs3 release... seems like there's a healthy relationship between the two companies. maybe that's just what they want us to think though.

I don't get it -
Is the iphone "just the internet" on the phone, or kinda-sorta the internet?

If it is in-fact the internet, then wouldn't www.youtube.com be available on the iphone just as much as www.nytimes.com?

I guess another way to phrase this is that I already assumed it would be available, as it is a website that is available.

Not knocking anything here - the encoding will be great, etc. but it seems redundant.
