ok.. "confirm it"
He just told you. Doesn't that CONFIRM it enough? Don't you believe him? What type of rumor reader doesn't just believe everything her/she hears? PFFFT. ;)

Well, let's see if Swissboy is right on this one...I hope not, because an updated PM or PB would be more exciting in my opinion...
I think the video ipod is ready for prime time, contrary to what Steve Jobs and everyone else says. The hard drive capacities are there, and there's always the external video option. As far as AV content goes: music videos and "home movies" (made with iMovie) would be sufficient for the time being. When they work out the details of DRM and content delivery, then we'll see more offerings coming from the iPod Video Store.

Btw, I hope this post isn't repetitive. I didn't have the time to read all the previous posts. :)

After two days of bizarre speculation ALL posts are repetitive by now :)

Let's get this cleared up. I have the news you have all been waiting for. Since I'm not under any stupid Apple NDA I can talk.

Apple Insider and Think Secret are all wrong. I can confirm 100% for you.

1.There is NO and I can confirm NO Powerbook or Powermac updates.
2.There is NO iPod video OR 5G iPod appearing.
3.No Airport express with video out.

The product is the unveiling of Apple's new internet tablet (whatever they call it I don't know). While us developers at Nokia have been hard at work on the 770 we have as developers seen Apple's device from their developers. Nokia has officially delayed our product the 770 to see the final offering from Apple and to make adjustments if need be. (i.e boost our performance with more ram on shipping so I am told and finish the touches on our software to support the bluetooth keyboard officially)

The Apple device itself will sport a 800x600 screen size (similar to ours) and will contain WIFI. It will have bluetooth to work with their cordless bluetooth keyboard and mouse (one up on our 770 internet tablet the mouse that is). The OS is a VERY stripped down version of OSX. Safari,Mail,iCal,iTunes, and iChat. These will be like widgets which is a good idea kinda like our hildon widgets.

It is a very good screen (same screen?). It is also a touch screen. It is not very big in size. It has NO HARDDRIVE but uses NAND flash memory. I think 512mb built in or other.

It has its own dock and lasts up to 4 hours on a charge. In comparison our 770 lasts 3. But Apple is known for overstating battery life.

We at Nokia await to see the new product. Apple will help us to make the internet tablet popular and sell in Europe with Nokia's offering.
 BS

There are reasons to raise the iPod to 80 GB that don't have to relate to video.

* Demand is small for high-capacity players, but it's there. SOME people want them. SOME people have more than 60 GB of music.

* Others want the portable HD space. In addition to my music and photo libraries (neither is huge), I boot Mac OS X off my iPod, and run all my apps from it, and store all my projects on it. That way any Mac I walk up to is MY Mac with MY settings, able to do MY work. I just boot it off the iPod. Great when I visit family (they have a Mac) and don't want to lug my PowerBook.

* The clincher: 80 GB drives may not COST Apple any more than 60s. It often happens with HD space that the cram in more GB for the same cost--or even discontinue making the lower-GB version.

Reasons not to:

* Demand is very small. Do you have any idea how poorly the 60GB iPods are selling right now? Do you seriously think that upping it by 20GB will make it that much better a product. There is virtually no demand for that additional 20GB. Sure there are a few people. Most of them probally posted here. So, Apple should release a product whose market is 100 people? Great. You misunderstand what the iPod is for. The iPod is a mainstream consumer product, aimed towards the general population. The people that Apple targets think 1000 songs are a lot. Unlike the Mac, Apple shouldn't care about the 1.5% that have so much music it doesn't fit on thier 60GB iPod.

* The clincher: price. The reason the 60GB is selling so poorly is not because it is too small but because it is too big. They should kill the 60GB line and offer a 40 or 50 that's $20 or $30 more than the 20GB iPod.

BZZZZT! If you really do work for Nokia....

You just violated your Nokia employment contract/NDA and posisibly the NDA Nokia signed to see Apple's product.

I might be there with you if my 5300ce case hadn't cracked, screen came apart, etc. Took a year to get that one resolved. Still presently content with my 500MHz Titanium, and I work in an industry where much more would be much better. Oh well, till I see something I really like (don't like the aluminum books), I'll just plug along (and use the more powerful computers at work). ;)

Whoop, might have one here.... ;) :D

You're not the only Nokia developer on these boards -- perhaps you're the same person posting under a different name. ;)

Interesting stuff, though.

I agree but Apple has an additional option of providing content that would fill such an iPod. Will they...? Personally I am not sure network bandwidth it up to if for enough folks to drive much sales.

Is everyone still forgetting the damn red movie curtain and no updates to the videos on iTunes? There has to be something movie related or video related whether it's an iPod, or some new feature or something on the iTunes store. And the invite indicates it's something special you would think, he never says that catch phrase unless he's showing something to wow you.

Agreed. This is either going to be the long-awaited 5G iPod with some sort of video tie-in, AirPort Express A/V, a Mac mini media center or some combination of the three.

What about the BBC thing?

Has anyone thought about linking this up with the leaked BBC story? The BBC is currently trialing a video on demand service so maybe they will be supplying some kind of exclusive content to an Apple Movie/Video service?

There is meant to be an announcement of something being broadcast on the beeb on the 12th.

Something tells me there are more than 100 of us waiting for higher capacity. I bet you thought the origianl 5gb ipod was unnecessary too - People only need 64mb, or 128mb at most, right? You probably think a computer with 1995 specs is more than anyone could possibly need too.

Look forward man, progress - It's the future!

Let's see..
Christmas is coming up..
Mainstream consumers are gonna want a new toy.
The operative word here is mainstream consumer ok?
NOT pros or scientist or musicians.Mainstream consumers..
you know those folks..The ones that like to take pictures of the family, listen to music, make home movies, surf the web and do email..

Visualize..Visualize.Visualize and most important.Think Different..

Think the new low-end eMac,iMac and perhaps even MacMini ( remember the one that got weird speed bumps with NO fanfare?)

I'll just spit it out...

Low-end "consumer oriented" macs..
iLife,OSX and a few other apps have been natively ported to Intel already..
The apps that "mainstream consumers" will want to use over the holidays.
I'd be willing to bet Office for the Mac has been ported to Intel from the same time OSX was..

Visualize and Think Different..

The first Macintel low-end machines for Christmas.Who wouldn't want one??

Either we're gonna see routine product updates Tuesday and/or Wednesday morning at their normal time (8AMish Eastern, 5AM ish Pacific) and something unexpected Wednesday at the press conference.

Or the press conference will be a full keynote style presentation and have several things announced with a one more thing at the end.

As for possibilitues:
  • Upgraded PowerBooks
  • Upgraded PowerMacs
  • Announce the Mac Mini upgrades that have been in stealth mode so far.
  • Larger capacity iPods.
  • One more thing - tablet*? AirPort Express A/V? Video iPod? Movie Store? some combination?

* I may as well add to the speculation, so: At this point would a tablet be PowerPC based, or with a stripped down OS X, could it be an Intel based tablet?

Yeah not apple... but S.J. you can.

How about those crappy little flash-based players he talked about? Jobs says something is not right for reason 'x' then has the engineers create a reason to outweigh problem 'x'. If you could read everything he's said about a possible video iPod, they all have an out. No content? Make content. Full-length movie on small screen? Make shorter video content available. Poor UI? Make it better. That's one of his genius-like qualities.

Please correct me if i am wrong here (as if you wouldn't!) but those curtains could also refer to a stage? think Opera, musicals, .......BANDS..........................................Asteroid!?

they have been good at keeping things on the quiet recently, it was the "worlds first firewire guitar" on macbytes that sparked this little brainwave into existance.

Could be onto something there. The only thing is, that wouldn't be as much of a mass market product as an iPod. Good thinking, though. The Beatles announcement coupled with Asteroid would do it, though.

Well enough that any other player maker would kill for those numbers :D People like to call the 60 GB iPods a "failure" because they sell in lower numbers. Of course they do. That's what a high-end model IS. That doesn't mean it makes no profit. (And a high-end model is also useful for mindshare, when people compare Apple's lineup with other companies.) YOU don't need 60 GB. Most people don't. But thousands of people have bought them. Do you think I should have to carry an iPod PLUS a separate portable hard disk? Compact storage has value.

ctachme said:

No. Going from 60 to 80, if that's the only change, would make it only a slightly better product. But if 80 GB costs Apple the same as 60, then why not make it a slightly better product?

Only if a 40 or 50 COSTS Apple just slightly more. That's assuming a lot. And even if so, then why have the 20 at all? And then you don't have a sub-$300 player.

You're assuming you know the costs of HD components better than Apple does. But remember when the 10 and 15 went away and we only had 20? Very odd if you look at just demand: 10 would be fine for most people. But if 20 doesn't COST Apple more--or even costs LESS because it's a newer and higher-volume component--then selling less than 20 no longer makes sense. We saw that happen.
