Also:

1. Longer battery life.
2. No Glass back.
3. Higher flash capacity.
4. Usually more RAM resources.
5. Freedom from people trying to rag on you about AT&T, even though AT&T is fine for many users.

The only disappointment for me is the lack of GPS. An iPod could be an excellent backup device for GPS users.

As to cameras I'm not thrilled with cell phone cameras at all. So it will be interesting to see what this sensor does for us. Ideally it would have good low light performance. Some are dismissing the video camera but it might be a smart move on Apples part. It keeps the device thin for one. Plus video is more popular than ever, if the sensors quality is good people will put it to good use.

Dave

You'd be AMAZED at the quality of the camera on an iPhone 4, and what certain photography apps allow you to do with images. I'm kinda blown away by it, actually.

They keep touting the iPod Touch as a "mobile gaming device" so adding vibration is a given really. Surprised it's taken them so long to include it.

That's awesome! Vibration AND a camera finally (things that should have been there a long time ago, I think), I might actually upgrade from my 1st gen now! :D

I think people are crazy that only want to upgrade from a first gen because of a camera / vibration. The reason to upgrade is the new screen, the A4, the additional RAM and the additional battery life. Even the third gen (32G or 64G) was a big reason to upgrade from a 1st gen and anyone with a 1st gen who used the 32/64G third gen for an extended period realized that the 1st gen was dog slow and crash prone with the newer apps (especially with IOS4). Many of the newer apps are not designed with the 1st gen low amount of RAM in mind so many of the apps perform slowly or crash on a 1st gen.

The camera / vibration is a nice addition but even without them, you should want to upgrade from a 1st gen.

bad idea. apple is killing themselves in my opinion. apple needs to keep the iphone better in more than one way. why would you want someone to buy a 230$ thing instead of a 600$ thing?

iPhone prices with monthly plans are artificially low. Conversely, iPhone prices without a monthly plan are artificially high because they want you to purchase the monthly plan. The real difference in manufacturing costs between an iPod Touch and an iPhone is probably something like $100, maybe even less.

Because you want as many people as possible to buy 230$ things and 600$ things (and 499$+ iPad things) to increase the number of people using FaceTime and iOS so that they become the de facto standards of mobile computing/communications.

ipod touch

at first i was sad that the ipod touch price went up 30 (they prices where supposed to go down for the new one. was rlly just a might) until i find out that they didnt just turn up the processor but almost everything else
:D

Surprised more people haven't commented on this...

I think it's a good idea to add this, for both accessibility and gaming. I'm going to love being able to get notifications without hearing them. That will be nice for loud places too, like at a mall or something.

As some people already pointed out, this is very unlikely to be the vibration device. It looks more like a miniature microphone capsule, probably the only one as there is none at the bottom.

You would need one as you don't want to have a headset on while using FaceTime. But it won't be at the bottom, mainly because the touch isn't to be held like a phone.
The thing where the pointer points is too small and lightweight to be a vibration motor. Plus, it's too firmly attached to vibrate altogether. You need a small motor and an off-center weight to make the thing vibrate. I can't see this there.
In fact, I can't see this anywhere in the FCC teardown. I'm not saying it is definitely not there, but I looked closely at all the pics and couldn't find it.

So we have the following differences between iPhone 4 and iPod touch 4G:

1. No 3G radio and SIM slot,
2. Worse camera (only on the back?),
3. No GPS,
4. No LED flash
5. No microphone at the bottom (no noise canceling with only one mic)
6. No glass back (stainless steel instead)
7. No earpiece
8. No electronic compass
9. Higher flash sizes available
10. Longer battery life
11. Slimmer
12. Worse (no-IPS) display? (I personally doubt that)
13. No vibration motor (would be my guess from what i've seen)

edit: Can't comment on higher RAM resources, but iPhone 4 and touch 4G have the same RAM size afaik.

So for $40 a month I could get unlimited data from virgin, use the touch as a phone, and have it vibrate when a call comes in?

:D Awesome!

I've been contemplating this very idea for some time now. I could get rid of my straight talk phone ($45/mo unlimited everything) purchase the Virgin Mobile Mifi Router ($140 mifi router & $40/mo unlimited data). I could then VOIP calls and sms messages anywhere I go.

My concerns are:

4 hour battery life and 40 hour standby time for the mifi. I'm not sure this will get me through the day without multiple charges.

The mifi will have to go everywhere I go if I am going to make and receive calls which means I will have two devices in my pocket, which I already do...cell phone and touch.

If the mifi had a low power option that could periodically sync up to iPod touch to provide internet access for notifications and such I'd be sold, but I'm not sure 4 hours is going to cut it for my type of use.

The question is that it will be function for new ipod touch in reality? Or apple just lock it up for saving to next future? I am not sure but I will test if it will be really happened after buying. Anyway it is a good news that Apple continue to create revolutionary of technology to ubiquitous gadget.

It's a real shame that Apple appear therefore to have gimped the capability on the new Touch.

And I'm sure you'd be amazed With the picture quality of high-end cameraphones from Sony Ericsson and Nokia etc, not evenemang the latest iPone can compare to the image quality of those.

YES, IT DOES, go to the apple website and look at the accessibility section for the iPod Touch : http://www.apple.com/ipodtouch/features/accessibility.html

IT SAYS IT HAS VIBRATING ALERTS! Why are people debating this?

Because you want as many people as possible to buy 230$ things and 600$ things (and 499$+ iPad things) to increase the number of people using FaceTime and iOS so that they become the de facto standards of mobile computing/communications.

..."So that they make more money" seems more obvious to me :)

Dear Comrade:

Here in capitalist world, two things mean same.

IT SAYS IT HAS VIBRATING ALERTS!
First of all, I know that it's been stated on Apple's website. But typos and false information can happen, so I'm just in doubt as someone tries to give proof for this which imho is not. In my (admittedly rather short) EE experience there is no vibration motor shown in the picture posted on the front side. I tried to find it to tell people where it in my opinion was but I couldn't. I'm looking forward to iFixit's teardown that shows me what I may have overlooked.
After all, I see no reason for shouting. My opinion won't change anything as yours will not. I won't even be a little bit sad if I'm proven wrong in a few days. Just my two cents.
