where are the specs!?!?! Why would apple announce a new ipod without telling people all the specs and new features to go with it??? Anyone else think that apple will make it available tomorrow for order on the website?

another thing, did macrumors find this article first? I'm pretty sure this was the case, but there are a few other websites out there trying to take the credit, and i think thats not fair! Can anyone varify this at all?

Because Apple has not announced yet. What we are experiencing now is a leak. They're always fun and interesting.

music not playlist

did anyone think it strange that in the pic the ipod first column begins with "music" and not "playlist." I think this means there are other things like "photo", "video", etc. What do you guys think??

macrumors was the first with the picture of the cover (big props go to mrdhammer) Then Newsweek shortly after officially leaked the image.

macrumors was also the first with the article (I posted the article after searching striclty be author and finding only one page of the three page story. Then the whole article surfaced on the front page of Newsweeks tech section, quite miracously. I have noticed one or two sites giving macrumors credit, but most say it wsa one of their posters. What a shame.

i know its a leak but the rumor from thinksecret said that apple was announcing it in a different medium, so if this is the announcement then there should be some specs in there somewhere, or at least a url to the apple ipod page that would have been updated by the time this hit the streets. The fact that there is a very brief sentence about the new release makes me wonder if there is more out their that isn't on the web yet, its like they are being very sneeky and letting us think we have found all of the article when in fact there is another one with the whole announcement on it.

Or maybe i'm just a bit crazy (i need to stop listening to the voices  )

My thinking exactly. The article as it stands is not about
a new iPod. Either there is another undiscovered article
that accompanies the "leaked" one, or an announcement
in some other form will happen entirely outside of the NewsWeek magazine.

heh....that makes sense, but it also doesnt make sense:
i was thinking, why would they change 'browse' to 'music,' and youre right, that if the new ipod would handle different kinds of media, that would make perfect sense!

but if that were so, why would they not show 'photo' or 'video' on the cover? seems like a perfect place to show off what the new ipod can do.

and the screen still isnt color, so i wouldnt bet on photo and especially not video.

Sony will end up killing Apple if this is the poor update for the iPod, seriously a click-wheel and bigger hard drive. Call it the end of the iPod if this is all they can 'Innovate', it is really sad honestly. Apple had another chance and it is now gone. Sony has it out for them with a vengance, longer battery life, video, tuner, etc... and who really cares about the proprietary format. One is just as bad as the other. Unless this update includes video or some other features, iPod is DEAD! Which is sad, I own a 1g and a 3g, and wil NOT upgrade to this if it is the 4g.

If the update is predictable from the the menu selection, the iPod has seen its hayday, Remember Steve Jobs has already made these mistakes about the market once, why wouldn't he make them again?

i think it is more likely that it was changed to say music for the purpose of the picture and we will never see that menu again. not everyone who picks up a newsweek will be familiar with the ipod so having the word music there, at the top highlighted explains eactly what he pod does a lot better than the word browse does.

No, that's a real feature. Summary from the NEwsweek article, since it keeps coming and going:

- "music" and "shuffle" on main menu
- click wheel
- multiple on-the-go playlists (used to be one)
- can delete songs from on-the-go lists (k3wl!)
- time compression for audiobooks (useful for music too? would be nice)
- 12 hour battery life - same-ish battery, better power manglement
- 20GB/$299, 40GB/$399, just the two sizes

Original iPod

I have the original iPod 5gb version with the physical scroll-wheel. Mine still works fine although the battery sometimes says it's full and then I use the backlight for a second or two the iPod turns off. When turned on it shows the little battery icon with the "!" symbol, then I charge it and it's fine.

I would like a new iPod but I don't need one, I have less than 5gb of music, and the iPod still works so I'm fine. I would like that cool camera media reader but I don't need it.

My old iPod is here to stay. :D

Who needs an AirTunes iPod?

most interesting thing would be airtunes enabled ipods - would be really rockin' if you sit on the toilet with the ipod in your hands changing the sound in the living room ... well i would buy one ... i want to do this toilet thing :)

I can already do that ... and so could you. Just get an "iTrip". Even better than AirTunes: Works with any radio/stereo in my house ... cars ... at the beach ... work ... anyplace there's a radio.

Highly recommended for any iPod (including Mini) owner. :)

It would be nice, but it wouldn't match their past behavior very well. Older models don't seem to get nice-to-have updates from new models, just nice-to-make-more money updates like support for peripherals and iTMS.

Where did that pic of the ipod with the lavender scroll wheel (red spirals in background) come from?

Maybe the new iPod will be available with different coloured scrollwheels? Very subtle, and keeps the rest of the iconic design.

Is that new scrollwheel a touchwheel, or a physical wheel? It looks more like a touchwheel to me!

It's obviously photoshop'd, but could the iPod screen on the pic with the blue gradient running through it, suggest the new iPods may indeed have colour screens?

I don't think so. The current display appears about the same blue when the backlight is on.

A $100 price drop on both models (40g & 20g) is very impressive!
It looks as if Apple might actually try to keep its marketshare

it sounds like thry're saving space in their price scheme for the 60gb drives they recently placed on order from toshiba.. that'll be the new 499

My money is on the 60gb coming out September 25th, after Cram & Jam ends.

Where to buy the 4G?

Any ideas on who the first e-tailer will be that has the 4G available--or will it be Apple direct initially?
