If nothing else changed besides the capacity, its a pretty lame update... well, least it doesn't make my 30 gig look so bad :)

It's pretty sad...The top-of-the-line iPod now has double, yes DOUBLE, the hard disk capacity of my G4.

Woohoo!

Now if only you could boot OS X from it...?

You can, but most people agree it's a bad idea due to the wear it puts on the drive.

I bought my 15 gig from Apple a couple of weeks ago, and I suppose I ought to be annoyed... but no, I paid $329 for it as a "refurbished" unit. The interesting part is it came in a retail box, unlike some of the other Apple refurbs I've bought which arrived in plain-wrap packaging. This confirms what I've always suspected -- that some of the products Apple sells as "refurbs" are in fact new overstocked units.

They should have moved the 10 GB to $199 and kept the 30 GB.

Then the pricing could be

10=199
20=299
30=399
40=499

I agree. It would be nice to see these options. I think the only reason why they don't offer this is they are affraid it will canabalize other iPod sales. By this I mean, if they offered the 10GB for $199 they would lose out on the being able to sell it for $299, plus also lose on all the other models except for the 40GB. Has Apple ever heard of VOLUME sales? At $199 the 10GB would fly off the shelves resulting in more future buyers.

On a sidenote, it's interesting that AsTheAppleTurns has such good sources, they always seem to be pulling these accurate predictions out of nowhere, when they do deign to dabble in the rumor black arts. :)

No freaking kidding! They act all "we are not a rumor site" and go around making quips at Jobs and Ive, and then they turn around and post some "recklessly unconfirmed" rumor. "recklessly unconfirmed" my foot. :rolleyes:

You hear me, Jack? :D

Refurbs from what I understand are "anything that comes off the factory line and doesn't go straight to your door. So if I bought two computers, but returned one without opening it, it becomes a refurb. That very thing happened to me about four years ago when Gateway screwed up my order and sent me two of the same machine. When I returned it, I was told it would be a refurb. Maybe someone just bought your iPod but returned it for whatever reason.

Could be, but I've notice this timing at the Apple store before. I strongly suspect that Apple sometimes sells new products as refurbs when they're trying to clear out stock for one reason or another -- in this case, right before a replacement product is released. It makes perfect sense if you think about it. The special deals section of the Apple Store might be another good place for the rumor-followers to watch.

sniff, sniff. I just bought a 15GB from the Aspen Grove CO store two weeks ago. I almost bought the bigger one, but it was a bit too much for me. I'm glad the upgrade was capacity only!

I also just purchased the 15GB model - received it last Tuesday. Although I'm a little upset (20GB is only $30 more at the Apple Canada store) I don't think I'd ever fill up even the 15GB model. Plus I wanted to make sure I got in on the educational rebate offer.

I'm wondering about the iPod firmware though. The Apple support page lists version 2.0.1 as the latest update, but when I looked at the "About" on my iPod, it says the version is 2.0.2. Could this mean that the newer iPods have support for the new peripherals that are supposedly coming out?

Hmmm..... Something to think about.

<- Wants a 40 GB iPod now

Funny, in Canada, the education price for the 10 GB iPod dropped about $17, but there is no educational discount on the 20 and 40 versions. There was for the 15 and 30s...

Well it would be nice to be able to record sounds if you're into that sort of thing. I use a portable DAT player.. however they sell for about $800.00... Macs are great for music. :D

Maybe not. I was giving the guy in the cube next to me a hard time about carrying notebooks full of CDs in each day. I told him to just get an iPod or something like it. He then told me that he had about 1200 CDs (my ~360 took up about 18gig so he'd probably need about 60gig). Now I give him a hard time that he could have bought a new car, funded his kid's college fund, etc. instead of buying 1200 CDs. He might be able to fit it on one of the bigger creative labs, but he wouldn't have any room to grow. He wants to go that way eventually but he's looking for at least 80gig before he even thinks about it.

Additionally the extra capacity might not be about music, it makes a nice small portable drive. At 40gig you've got room for a little over 3 hours of DV video, lots of room for textures, and large 3D files, etc, whatever you want to tote around.
True.... I have 600 cd's in my collection and if you average about 7 songs per cd, which I think is a conservative number, you'd end up with 4200 songs.... I will eventually put all my music into my Mac and then the iPod. Plus my sister has about the same amount of music, but we listen to completely different stuff, so I'm sure I'll connect to her Mac at some point and dl some of her tunes; which I'd never buy the CD's. That would come to about 8,000 songs. Then I have some friends with Macs and that will only grow.

I don't think it's illegal to share music as I've just mentioned with friends.... Only when you share it with the masses. I don't use any file sharing progams.

I'm glad other people are posting this comment, it is sad that the 40 GB iPod holds more than many of our current hard drives, myself included.

Hey, trust me-- I'm as surprised as you are.

Now I wish I had listened to the guy when he also said "iMac speed bump of some proportion." D'oh!

In a word, no.

This is cool the iPods and iMacs got updated. The iMac should have a better GPU-like a Geforce 5650 with 128MB on the high end model (or better, if they can stick it in there somehow), but it's still good to keep things semi-modern.

BUT...where the heck are the PowerBooks? The iMacs and even the iPods have been updated TWICE since the PowerBooks were updated! What's going on?!?

I'm wondering too if the new iPods qualify for that educational "buy a bundle" deal. The rebate hasn't been changed to reflect it, but I'd assume they still qualify. Otherwise only the 10GB model would work for it, and I doubt Apple wants to limit people to buying their cheapest model.

apple sucks

I just got my 30gb two weeks ago. Now there's a 40gb?

Same thing happened with my iMac. A few months after I bought it, they come out with a 17" version...and an OS upgrade!

I like my Mac. I like my iPod. I'm just pissed off that Apple can't upgrade the things that need it, like the 15" pb.

Nope, they the 40 gig is the same size/weight as the 30, and the 20 is the same size as the 10/15

This is really cool, but as earlier poster have said, still too expensive. What would be nice, though I don't know if possible, would be if Apple just cut the current prices on the iPods in half. I wouldn't at all mind spending $250 on a 40 GB iPod. $500 though? I just can't afford it.

Still, go Apple! Blow em' out of the water!

Close but no Banana. I need something well over 40GB. My current music collection consist of 43GB of MP3’s. If anything I would want to be eyeing an 80GB iPod.

Really quick question: Does the iPod handle mixed codecs well? Example. I transfer my collection over to it and then start downloading tracks off of ITMS. Will the mixed types play nice together?

*slams head into keyboard over and over and over again*

*sighs* If Apple doesn't have the CPU's to install in a 15" PowerBook there isn't a whole heck of a lot they can do is there? Cut them some slack. When Moto gets its crap in gear then you'll have your PowerBook.

The fear of caibalizing sales is what is keeping people with the original 5 Gigers from buying new ones. I don't listen to all my music. I've set up my playlists to only carry songs with a play count and have another playlist that has any song that I've added in the last three months that has not been played. I don't NEED to get a new one. However, for $199, I would have jumped off the fence and bought a new one. I may jump after that refurb 10 Giger though. I have a workout strap that I love and wouldn't really want to get a new one.

There will be two types of consumers: the ones looking for cheap and the ones looking for biggest/baddest. The iPod is out there! It's all over the place. I see a different person with one everyday! These people aren't going to cheap out and buy the 10 Gig if their 2nd gen 20 gig is full. They'll probably go get the 40 Gig. Having a cheap bottom line model will keep people upgrading. Hell they almost had me...

DOH!

Oh, well, I have had my 30 for 3 months, I was really hoping at the time they would do 10/20/40, like the original ratios of 5/10/20. When Apple only put out 30 I got it anyway, but I have about 45gb of mp3s, not including any of my albums or cassettes I want to endcode.

Maybe I can give my wife the 30 and get a 40 :cool: That would handle all my stuff.

And for the RIAA - screw off, I bought them all. :p
