ipods (mac version) play all mp3s, aac, aiff, and wav files. i think the windows versions are missing a few formats.

you could use aiff files but as they are really big you might go through a battery charge faster 😕

For bad luck you can't beat this: my iPod <i>arrived</i> today. A 15g, that is. Before I opened the plastic, I called and asked if they're offering any kind of exchange package.

I was told I could get either a swap for a 20g one (just have to pay the shipping back), or $30 in payment protection. I chose the $30, since if I'd swapped it, I wouldn't have been able to get the education $200 rebate when bought with a mac.

It's only a third more space (20g)... ok, so that is quite a bit, but it's not the end of the world. I'm impressed they offered <i>anything</i> at all. I won't be losing sleep over it.

BTW, my ipod is nice. I'm liking the whole mac experience - things just happen. I plugged the iPod into my iBook, and while reading the manual to figure out how to transfer my music, I looked up and realised it had already started. Nice.

I will NOT buy another Pod, nor will I encourage ANYONE to buy one untill at least 2 is implemented (and not just for new Pods, if they don't cover at least 2G units, fugeddibouditt) and better both 1 and 2. Unless the person knows they will never try to walk, run, jog or do anything active while trying to listen to music.

Thanks PaulC, very interesting tidbit. My main reason for getting an iPod is because my use will be mostly stationary. However it's fairly enlightening as there was that thoguht "hmmm... I wonder if I can jog with it?" Still a great purchase, just don't jog it.

here's hoping. i get my new TiBook Monday, it would be peachy if i had my new 20GB iPod by then too.

NEW 40

The Apple store already called me yesterday so I spent last night fitting exactly 6552 160kbps MP3s onto my new 40gig for a total of 37.16gb. That's alot of music. Now if I play random, I shouldn't hear the same artist twice for several hours!

I think I'll probably wait at least two years when I need to upgrade my system, and hopefully the harddrive space of my uncompressed music collection will only represent a mere fraction of the hard drive sold stock on the iMac at that time. Before then, I'll simply suffer the lack of quality (although hard to tell most times when I have the iPod going and there's alot of background.) However, before then I still think that I would like to buy the uncompressed songs, this is the only reason I have yet to purchase any single album. If I'm gonna spend 9.99 for compressed albums, why not have the original sound quality off a CD for cheaper at my favorite used CD shop?

IBM has found a method of getting around some of the limitations that you are talking about by adding a layer of ruthenium to the hard drive platter. Also known as "pixie dust". The above device is one of the first, AFAIK, to use this method.

I'm guessing next summer/fall we'll see if not 80GB drives, 60GB or 70GB ones. We haven't hit the wall yet, and it seems like whenever we get close someone finds a way of poll vaulting it. The 80GB drives only came out last summer-fall so the timeframe for new drives isn’t that off. If we don’t see or hear about new drives by summer of 2004 then I’d start getting a bit worried.

iPod Question

By the way, anyone know why my computer won't recognize 2 ipods at once? When I first plugged my 40gig into the firewire port open, the 10gig I had already active on the desktop was taken off the desktop without me doing anything.

I don't thinks it's as bad as the original poster made it out to be. I was listening to mine while walking the other day for a few hours and there was nary a hiccup. I didn't jog or run so I can't vouch for that, but walking with it in your pocket is not a problem. I did have a bad 30gig that just got replaced that would lock up if you just looked at it wrong and finally just up and died, but the replacement had been rock solid.

well i've done some running with it... i've found no skipping... but i didn't run for hours and hours... i ran for about 20 mins with the ipod and nothing happened... so... yea...

I agree. With FW, it is so easy, fast and painless to sync selective playlists.

I know a bunch of PC using folks that would jump at a 10GB one for $199. The $299 is just too much in their minds.

Additionally, I would love to have a solid state iPod in 1 or 2 GB capacity. I must commute by train while wearing a suit. A thinner iPod would sure be nice -- especially one less than 3/8 inch. Now that would be nice.

I have an original 10GB one.

I walk, jog, run, ski, etc. with it. So far no problems after about 18 months.

Maybe I am just lucky. Knock on wood, so far so good! 🙂
