Newbie iTunes 7.4.3.1

Would I have any luck making ringtones with the new updated version of iTunes? I've been sitting here stressed out for about 2 hours. I just got my iPhone 2 wks ago.

The smoke has cleared, and iToner reigns supreme. Check it out. They recently updated it to support the 1.1.1 firmware, although the update is still in the testing phase.

Just read the compatibility statement before downloading it.

They should be releasing it soon.

If you're dead setting on getting something to work soon though... you might want to just buy one from iTunes.

Clearly we need a lawsuit against Ambrosia, since they are causing damages and are engaging in monopolistic business practices by not having a Windows version of iToner.

I should be able to use iToner on any OS I want =~(

having trouble getting iphone ringtones

i am having problems getting my itunes to find my m4r ringtones. i copy the original aac file, paste it in the same folder and open ringtones, and the ringtones are not there, i tried taking the m4r out and putting it back in my itunes library folder and it still is not there. am i doing something wrong? i used just a standard mp3 to aac converter to make the aac. thanks for any future help, im desparate!

Are there any free music editing programs so that I can edit songs for my free ringtones.

Not sure if someone has shared this, but like every other audio "distinction" in iTunes, "ringtones" are no different. They are AAC files with a special name. In this case, the extension is "M4R".

  1. To add a ringtone to your iPhone, using Windows Explorer or the Finder just duplicate and rename any AAC file to be "M4R", then double-click on it. This file will be added to your iTunes library automatically.
  2. Now, click on your iPhone in iTunes, and go to the ringtone section. You should now see your new ringtone. If you want to be sure about the sync, feel free to click "selected ringtones" and check off the file explicitly, though this shouldn't be required.
  3. Now SYNC your phone. You're Done!

This works on the PC, I'm still downloading the Mac version, but its the same principle. Sorry Ambrosia, Apple totally made your product iToner unnecessary as you gambled it might. Thanks for the week though. It was fun.

The first message in this thread refers to using iTunes 7.4.0 and IPhone 1.0.2 firmware (old information). If you have later versions, you have to use different instructions (in this thread or another thread, I forget where it's posted excactly).

The basic need for 1.1.1 firmware is that you need iTunes 1.4.0, Ringtonemaker and a Mac. I don't recall if they ever got ringtones working from XP with 1.1.1 yet.

Since this subject is of particular interest to me and it's the only hack I'm interested in, I spent hours trying to make the steps I've been reading about all over the internet work. I now feel dumb that it's so simple. It seems that some of the steps I'm reading elsewhere have left stuff out so I'm going over it one more time in the hopes that it will help others. I have a mac mini G4 PPC. As stated above, you need iTunes 7.4.0, I'm running 1.1.1 on my iPhone and you also need Make iPhone Ringtone.

1. Import your mp3 into iTunes (double click the file, wherever it is, so it plays and adds itself to the Library)
2. Right click that file in iTunes (or control click it) and convert to AAC (If your preferences aren't set to import AAC in iTunes then change that first. iTunes-Preferences-Advanced-Importing then choose import using AAC).
3. Find the new AAC file in the Finder: right-click the AAC file in your iTunes library and choose Show in Finder.
4. Right-click the file in the Finder and choose Get Info. Change the last letter in the file extension to r so that the file is renamed an m4r (formerly m4a). Confirm that you want to change to m4r when the window pops up. Keep your Finder window open.
5. Go back to your iTunes library and delete the AAC file from the library but make sure to KEEP THE FILE. Delete from your Library only.
6. Go back to the Finder window and double click the m4r file. It will open in iTunes, add itself to the Ringtone playlist and play.
7. Sync your iPhone. When you do, the ringtone will add itself to your sounds on the phone but if you choose it, it will not play and that's where the rest of this comes in.
8. Now in the Finder go to iTunes-iTunes Library-Ringtones and change that same m4r file back to m4a: right-click-Get Info and changing that last letter again.
9. Open Make iPhone Ringtone and drag that file from the Finder into the Make iPhone Ringtone window. It will open in iTunes, add itself to the Ringtone playlist and play. Your ringtone will be listed twice in both the Ringtone playlist and on the Sync list for your iPhone but it will only appear in the sounds on your phone once.
10. Sync your phone again. Go to sounds on your phone and choose the ringer, it should now play.

I hope this helps. :)

I understand and largely agree with your sentiments. :)

BTW, the hack posted above... it won't work all of the time. You'll see... :)

I was trying to get the song "There Was A Time" by Guns N' Roses on my iPhone to use as a ringer. I was able to get it on the phone, but then when someone called me I got no sound. Does anyone know why this might be?

Andrew is right!
I bought iToner....
HAPPY AS A CLAM!!!!
I have 83 ringtones now. Doing that many the hack way would BLOW.....
Blow time!!!!!
Great thing about iToner is that if you select a ringtone for a contact and accidently sync with another compputer-- losing all your ringtones-- when you re-sync with iToner the ringtones you selected for your contacts are remembered. There, that was confusing huh? I type good.:D

It's interesting.

This thread now lives on in infamy. I have at least 200 or more people still visiting my blog everyday from assorted links around the Internet, just to use a hack that no longer works. Meh. --And no one sticks around to read my delightful stories and anecdotes from life, how dare they?!?

Until I finally break down and update the original post like any responsible person would, I'll keep recommending people use the impeccably well designed iToner and looping back on this self-same moment in time to do this all over again..

It's interesting.

when i convert the extension to M4r everything works, it moves to ringtones until i try to sync it. then it tells me that the song can not be played on this iphone? any ideas

No Sound with Ringtone

Hi, I followed every step and was able to sync my custom ringtone onto my iphone. But when I play the ringtone there is nothing coming out of it. No sound. I made the length of the song shorter to about 30sec. What am I doing wrong?

Nothing. What you're doing simply no longer works. I've updated the first post of this thread to reflect the state of things appropriately. Hopefully that helps people avoid this cycle. EDIT: Bite my tongue. It's working again, see below.

Wow. I guess this now works again.
For reasons I do not begin to understand, the combination of iTunes 7.5 and the 1.1.2 iPhone once again allow you to add custom ringtones without fussing with property lists and special software. Take any m4a file, thirty-seconds or less (although some report success with tracks up to 40 seconds), rename it to m4r and double-click to add it to iTunes. The file appears in your ringtones and can be synched--I tested this out myself--to your iPhone.

So has Apple relented? Or is this a momentary lapse of oversight? Only time will tell.

Queue the people in the U.S. wondering why they haven't been able to download 1.1.2 yet. :)

Monday maybe.

Not Really Working...

So I followed all the rules, visited other sites for some other help and still nothing.

I've converted my AAC file to M4R and woohoo, it showed up on the Ringtones tab...but when I sync... I keep getting the message, "Name of Song" was not copied to iPhone because it cannot be played on this iPhone.

Anyone know what to do?:(

What iPhone firmware are you on? It only works for 1.1.2

I'm still using version 1.0.2 on my iphone since i'm not in the US and upgrading it will cause blocking... and I have the new 7.5 version of itunes... I guess this combination will not work for customizing ringtones? I'm having the same trouble of: getting the ring on the "ringtones library" of itunes, but not recognized in the "ringtones tab" of the iphone area... and after trying to sync, the error message "... song cannot be played on this iphone" appears... Is there a solution? Or I just gonna have to update the phone? Thanks.
