Solution!

Hey everybody,
Like many of you I have had my share of problem in the ringtone department, all is not lost however. I am using Windows by the way.

My set up:
---------------------------------------------
iTunes 7.5
iPhone 1.1.2
That's all you need....oh wait you need your song too (Don't!!!)
---------------------------------------------

Here's what I have been doing, and it has worked every time (at least the last 10 time I have tried).

First get your song, trim it to less than 30 seconds. My 30 second song was always in mp3. Now open this file with itunes, and convert it aac.

The aac file should be directly underneath (it was for me) the original file (in iTunes). Right click on the converted file (they both will have the same name) and click on get info. A new box should come up, now on the bottom you should see the path, right click on that path and click "show in windows explorer"

Now you should see you file, it should have a .m4a extension. Zip this file. Now go back to itunes and delete both of your files, the original song and the converted song.

Go back to windows explorer, and unzip the zipped file. Now change the name from m4a to m4r. All lowercase.

Double click click on the m4r file, and iTunes should pop with your ringtone should appear under the well, the Ringtone tab.

I am going to skip the steps for the sync part (if you need that, let me know)

Now sync! You should be good to go, if not, let us know!

Good luck and have a great day!

Will this Windows method correct the "everything works fine, but the ringtone won't actually play" error? In other words, I convert. I rename. I sync. It shows up on the iphone under the custom tab. I select it. Silence. If the phone rings only vibrate. It plays in iTunes. It sounds great. It's less than 30 seconds. Everything works perfect EXCEPT once it gets put on the phone, it goes silent. The stock ringtones still work, so something isn't right. Any ideas?????

Can you please tell us which version of iTunes you are using, and which iPhone firmware version you are using?

Oh, sorry. I'm using all the latest versions. iTunes 7.5, iPhone 1.1.2. Vista. (yeah yeah, it's a work deal...)

I am assuming you are unable to see the extension of your file.

Here's what you do:

Open Windows Explorer. Click on Tools-->Folder Options--> Click on the View Tab --> Now look for a check box with the text "Hide extensions for known file types" --> Uncheck this check box and click apply

You should now be able to see the file extensions.

Hope that helps. Have a good one.

but when you do this you have a ringtone that is the full song right? not just the part of the song???

but when you do this you have a ringtone that is the full song right? not just the part of the song???

Unfortunately at the moment, the limit is set at 30 seconds . Although some have said there are higher limits - around 40 seconds or so, I have maxed out at 30 seconds.

I used iToner and it worked great for me, I mean how many rintones do you need to add over a 30 day free period, and what the heck if you want to ad more at a layter date is 15 buck going to break the bank with a 500 bucks phone??????

Why should people pay for it, when it can be done for free?

converting ringtones

I have a PC. I know this is a mac forum but I was wondering if I could get some help. I have windows vista and I don't know the process I have to go through to convert MP3 into M4R which I think is the formate needed for iphone ring tones. If anyone does can they go into detail and how I go about this process. Step by step. Thanks.

ringtones

is there a step by step yet for windows ?

jeff

if ur ringtones r not syncing follow this, if u r trying to put ring tones on ur iphone but the same song is showing up loads of times and it only plays that song as well follow this.

i have read a lot of threads and came up with a lot of errors, here is how it worked for me.

the best way to put ringtones on jailbroken 1.1.3 iphone and latest itunes do the following:

1.find the song and use windows movie maker to cut it under 30seconds.
2.save it as a movie file to ur desktop. it will say wma at the end of it, with a windows media player sign.
3.open itunes and drag file into music folder. this will ask u if u want to chage to AAC click yes.
4.then drag file back to desk top once converted.
5.click on the file to re-name, the extension will say e.g- billyjean.m4a, change this to billyjean(m4r). the symbol will then say ringtone on it.
6.drag this file back into the ringtone section of the library where it will save.
7. go to ur iphone IMPO--**make sure the manually sort out my account is unchecked, or else this will not work.****8. go to ringtones on the tab at the top, ur ringtones will appear here, the sync them all.
finished: now all ur tones should appear on ur iphone.

changing extensions on windows

i might be slow, but how exactly do u change the extension on the file

Windows Explorer
The first thing to do is open Windows Explorer (or My Computer) and view the file you wish to change.

At this stage you might notice that your file does not appear to have an extension. This is probably because you have Windows set to hide extension names. Go to Tools > Folder Options, then click the View tab. Uncheck the box titled "Hide extensions for known file types".

Click OK. Now you should be able to see the file extensions for all files. Right-click the file name and select Rename.

all you have to do is convert file to aac first using itunes, drag it back to desktop, the file extension will say (m4a) just rename to (m4r) you are just chaging the name not the file.

hope this helpd

that is what is supposed to happen.

the file is supposed to become .m4a

you then just change this m4a to m4r then drag this into your ringtones library folder in itunes.

make sure you uncheck manage my own folders on the iphone summary page, then jus sync the tone and there you go. if you have any more troubles let me know. if you need a proper step by step jus email me ill try step by step.

I can't sync ringtones to my iphone

I followed the above instructions and got ringtones in my itunes library and they will not sync to the iphone. When I drag them directly to the iphone logo on itunes, they copy ok. However, all the custom ringtones on the phone itself are the same song! Has anyone seen this problem?

iphone 1.1.2
