I also think its a bit cheeky to be criticising Microsoft for their advertising budget. Afterall, 'marketing' was one of the 6 aspects that Tim Cook, Chief Operating Officer, highlighted as contributing to Apple's success in the recent keynote to the new Macbooks and Macbook Pros

Marketing is not the same thing as advertising.

And if someone has invested some £10 000 in gear and Apple software that is over a year old and dependent on Firewire, what are they suppose to do now???? How about you actually read what the complaints are about instead of whinning about seeing threads about it, they do have a legitimate reason for being angry. Apple fans are very loyal and stunts like this is a real slap in the face.

Oh jeez - if you can afford to invest over £10K in gear then I can't believe you would even think about using a Macbook as opposed to a MacBook Pro - especially as the previous generation Macbook was so underpowered (certainly so in the graphics department)

Nothing is stopping you using the equipment you have already invested in - what are you complaining about ?

Mac with Boot Camp - "Hi - I'm a PC"

I'd like to see Justin Long say "Hi - I'm a PC too" and have John Hodgman do a spit take. Then go on to explain Boot Camp or Parallels. The only problem is that you still have to have a MS license so they still get the coin in their pocket. Just though it would be a good visual.

um...if what you do doesn't use the 3d part of the graphics card, there was almost no difference between the MB and the MBP. Slightly (barely) faster version of the same processor and a larger screen.

And more weight.

Some people want a SMALLER screen and LESS weight. Imagine that...Apple users wanting things smaller and lighter...and Apple refusing to provide what they want. The AIR is a failure with so many compromises it isn't worth bringing up, so don't bring it up. The AIR is a concept album that sticks steadfast to the concept, but forgets to be a decent listen in the process.

The new macbooks have a smaller screen than the MBP, no unnecessary graphics chip(you have to log out to change graphics cards?!?!?!?!?), the same unibody aluminum case, better battery life, and less weight, all with a slight processor de-clock and not much else in the way of handicaps. And then they arbitrarily cut off the FW port. If Apple is "moving away from Firewire" then why did they put one on the MBP? Seems like a contradiction to me...No, they just realized that most people would want the regular MB, even "pros" because the most asked for thing by pros is for a new 12" MBP...Apple knows what people want, but they can't get the margin they would like. How to keep people from leaving the MBP on the shelves in droves? Kill the FW port, that's how.

I like the ads still as they are funny, but Apple should be focusing more on why their OS and machines are "better".

After all, the new, greener notebook manufacturing process is pretty cool, but who the Hell is going to know about it that hasn't downloaded the video from Apple's website? If they're so hyped about it they should spend a bit of money getting that message out there imho

Do you have any IDEA how many Apple people and how many MORE PC people would laugh themselves silly over something like that? Suggesting that Vista doesn't need to be fixed to a universe that instinctively knows that it does?

Probably not that many given that it's fine.

Of course, if you can point out the major issues be my guest - there's a few bits and bobs to do (improving file transfer springs to mind) but nothing major.

But what do I know? I only use the OS.

Maybe Apple will actually tell us what OSX does better rather than Vista's perceived weaknesses in future ads. You never know.

Negative campaigning. If I were an investor, I would be asking serious questions as to why they're not advertising the benefits of OSX, instead of continuous pathetic jibes at Microsoft.

There is an ammount of arrogance and smugness that is measurable in megatons in these adverts - and it reflects the very worst of the Apple fanboy network. They need to shake free of it and extol the virtues of OSX to people who don't know what it is, rather than preaching to the converted with in-jokes and inter-marketting dept. squabbles.

Couldn't agree more

When consumers are shopping for a computer, few of them give jack **** about whether or not it is green. Advertising it would probably be money wasted. The only reason Apple touted it in the video is to get green organizations off their back and to stop negative press on the green matter. And if Apple was a truly green company, Steve Jobs wouldn't be encouraging FireWire users to chuck their old FireWire devices in favor of bastardized USB versions.

Great post! Though unfortunately, it's probably wasted on 80% of this threads respondents.

Brilliant

Apple's ads are always right on the money. It has to be fun to be a copywriter on that project.

These are becoming unpleasantly reminiscent of the political advertising we are being accosted with this election season. And I hate to say it, but Apple seems to be the one that is "going negative". The original Apple series was cute and only mildly negative (they used the negativity to make a positive comparison point for the Mac), but these rebuttal ads are going over the top, IMO. Who cares how much MS spends on ads-- they have 50 bajillion dollars in the bank. The MS ads have been nothing but positive. Boo, Apple, from this (usual) fanboy.

One lousy port missing and people go crazy ....

I love how people act like the Firewire port is the single *most* critical part of a notebook purchasing decision, all of a sudden. If Apple hadn't left it off of one *consumer focused* lower-end laptop of theirs (despite it still being on EVERY other machine they sell right now), you'd barely even hear any talk about it.

The larger screen, alone, is a GREAT reason to upgrade to a Macbook Pro. People wouldn't be leaving them on shelves in droves, as long as they offer 2 more inches of screen space on a better-quality display, while still offering a form-factor thinner than almost all the direct competitors. If you "don't use the 3D part of the graphics card", you're probably not very much of a "power user" either. You have to consider, the OS itself even uses the 3D acceleration to an extent, and will only use more with the next release. Faster video is a good thing for almost anybody -- not just "hard core gamers".

As has *always* been the case, too, Macbooks don't include ExpressCard slots, while MB Pros do. That's analogous to iMacs not having expansion card slots, while Mac Pros do. Consumers don't care.... Pro users do.

The difference in size and weight between the Macbook Pro and regular Macbook is fairly insignificant. The same people I see complaining about these laptop "weight issues" will toss needless books, spare chargers, and other extras in their bag right afterwards that weigh more than whole notebook. It makes no sense, really....

I found the Microsoft ads pretty effective at first, but as they kept playing them so often, started to realize that 1) the "PC" main dude is very unlikable. 2) the casting of the rest of the commercial, especially the hip young folk, reminds me a lot of the early Zune ads and something just seems wrong...

I feel like the "I'm a Mac" commercials have been getting kind of old... and not so funny anymore... but "Bean Counter" is a breath of fresh air! I love it, very creative.

What really bugs me is that as soon as Microsoft aired their recent ads, many Mac users dismissed them, quite verbally, saying they did sweet FA to actually advertise their products. Well, as soon as Apple do exactly the same (and to an even lesser degree I might add), they are all hailed as 'funny' and 'great' and 'better than Microsoft could have ever achieved'. It's for these reason why I sometimes hate being associated with Mac users.

[IRONY]Hey all you videographers b*tching about Firewire (or lack thereof), just tell your camcorders that it's not like FW is the most critical part of a camcorder and to get over it, like the man says.

JEEZ.[/IRONY]

Obviously you're not an investor. These ads work. Period.

To the average consumer, anything technical computer details would go straight over their head. Apple is about hiding the complexity. The general consumer just need to know that a Mac is better, not why. "How to" commercials for a Mac are probably coming, but it's still too early. Think about the new trackpad, that has potential.

P.S. It's OS X, not OSX.... and I hope you don't call that oh-ess-ex.

As an avid Mac user and geek I find them all hilarious. On the other hand, as an investor who wants that market share to grow more, I would like to see Apple focus more on the "Off the air" kind of ads, the ones that focus on why to switch.

Actually the adds that tell people why to switch are the get a mac adds. They let people know what WINDOWS really is like, what state their in, and mac tells people in the adds why mac is, just so much BETTER, the ease of use, the virus free and crash free operating systems, and so on.

(So i don't get fifty quotes on this, macs do get viruses and crash, but not nearly as often as a PC! Thank You!)

Exactly! People already know that Macs can point and click. They need to know they solve the frustration problems.
