For aesthetic reasons. How often do you use it anyway? Why not put all the ports on the front in that case?

You are being annoyingly hyperbolic. The SD slot serves so little purpose on the back that it could have been left out entirely. I don't really need to answer that second question do I, since no one asked for that.

Apple, the self-proclaimed leader in form COMBINED WITH function, should have designed nice looking front ports.

Sweet, I knew it would happen but where was the party? not one word from Jobs? Darn apple is all into its pads and phones but this is good.

That's often a bad thing with Apple products though. A prime example is the Time Capsule which craps out in about 18 months and it's always because of the extra heat generated by the internal power supply.

So because it happend for a very limited number of devices of a single model, it's suddenly "often" a bad thing? 🙄

With electronic distribution via iTunes, the Mac will never have bluray. Apple looks at the optical drive as a whole as obsolete, much less a format they have already replaced.

Well that's clearly what they're thinking but they're wrong - especially if they want to push this beast as a media centre PC.

Digital download might be the future, but if you want good 1080p video then either blu-ray or warez'd copies of blu rays are the present. And so people have the choice between inferior itunes downloads, warez, or buying one of those Dell boxes that also go under the TV, include blu-ray and cost about the same as the new mini.

Dilemma

I want to replace my 2 year old Mini (2.0ghz, 2gb memory, 950 IGP) to run Aperture and occasional gaming. I was waiting for an iMac refresh but this will fit better on my desk and work out cheaper .... will the graphics be enough?

As for the SD slot: putting on the back is practically useless, I will end up running a USB cable to a card reader at the front for easy access, which doesn't look so good. The SD slot on my daughters MBP looks pretty good so I do not see an aesthetic issue with putting it on the front, either below the optical drive slot or even have the two slots side by side (remember this is over an inch wider than the old one).

So... why exactly are they introducing HDMI now that the 1.3 standard is essentially all but at the 15 minute mark? Are they trying to make subsequent models that will include the 1.4 standard all the more appealing by creating a more established caste system between the machines?

Advertising NVIDIA GeForce 320M graphics with "It brings more pixel-pushing power to the latest 3D games and graphics-intensive applications" is quite a lie.

What Notebookcheck says about NVIDIA GeForce 320M:
"Older and less demanding games should run in high details fluently. Modern and demanding games like Crysis or NFS Shift should only run in low detail settings"

hmm, steam works just fine, I don't need the highest details, and since anything more than 30 fps is pure marketing, it will probably be fine. Remember the Wii that everyone bitched and complained about the graphics quality.... And yes, while good graphics specs are nice, playing team fortress on a 60 inch plasma would rock at 1080P...

I've been waiting for this, although the price jump is higher than I was expecting...probably still buy one though.

Apple Store is down again so maybe something else is coming to join this?

If you don't need (or can't achieve) the highest settings, something is telling me that 1080p playback on a 60 incher isn't exactly what you're going to be getting...

Hmmm HDMI

Very sleek looking, have to say. Now what is apple going to pull out of its hat for new displays?

Any noticeable difference between 2.40GHz vs 2.66GHz? Please?

2.40GHz ships in 24hrs
2.66GHz (BTO option) ships in 4 days

At best it will be about 10% faster for CPU-bound tasks, less advantage for tasks which depend on the cache, memory or hard disk.

The extra speed is useful if you are doing things like video conversion or photo processing which need lots of CPU, but for more general use you aren't likely to notice. I never noticed much difference between my 2 GHz Mac Mini and 2.2 GHz MacBook Pro (both Core 2 Duo).

I had the mac mini with the nvidia 9400m and now a macbook pro with the 320m and its not a slightly better integrated card, its a HUGE upgrade. Trust me now my 9 spaces doesnt stutter anymore and plex player can play 12gb + bluray mkv files buttery smooth with no trouble whatsoever.

It's always a question of what you are comparing. Going from a snail to a racing snail might be a huge upgrade from the POV of the snail. But not if you have an ant in the race. An ant that's only 20-30 USD more expensive than the racing snail and has practically no disadvantages.

Great, now every computer Apple produces has more GPU power than the base-line Mac Pro. Just great.

And we wait.

unless mac pros start to become all the rage amongst soccer moms, senseless yuppies and teens, i think we'll be waiting a long time. gotta sell those iPadzZzZz.

It's probably an upgrade for the iMac because the configuration page of the iMac was offline since this morning.

If you compare the specs of the Mini and of the Macbook then your attitude about laptops might change. In other words, a Mini is a laptop without the screen, battery, and keyboard.

That's true, but the real problem I have with laptops is the battery life (and therefore need for a power supply). I need a portable computer while on the road, but I don't need to whip it out in a cafe or anything like that. So the battery just extra bulk and weight. That's why a laptop is too much of a compromise for me.

With the mini, there's no power supply to carry (in fact, that power cable is so universal, if you forget it you just have to find one from a post-1980s boombox or better- ever forget your macbook power supply and need to drop $100 for a new one?). And with the iPad, there's your input and output in a lightweight case with a long battery life. If I did need to use it in a cafe, I could access the mini via vnc from there too, with longer use and much greater portability.

Blu-ray is a negative in and of itself even though it's great for a home theater. I'm sure someone will say that there are Blu-ray players for under $100. Great, but I doubt anyone can find a 9.5mm ultra-slim slot-loading BRD for under $600. It's not just about iTS, it's about the lack of available drives for the products Apple sells. One can argue they don't have to go so thin, but that's telling Apple to change it's core nature, which is a foolish argument against any company.

Apple wants to steer people into the digital distribution with its iTunes store. If not for that, Apple would have persued Blu-ray long ago. Wouldn't be any technical obsticles, etc. Those arguments are just wrong.

HOLD IT, NOW WAIT A MINUTE.

US Store : 699,- dollars
NL Store : 799,- euro's

What the hell Apple... thats not fair!

Love the new look but the price is not gonna cut it for me.
The last model was 599,- euro's and 599,- dollars.

THATS 200,- euro's more (about 230,- dollars more)
