US Store : 699,- dollars
NL Store : 799,- euro's

What the hell Apple... thats not fair!

Love the new look but the price is not gonna cut it for me.
The last model was 599,- euro's and 599,- dollars.

Taxes, taxes and taxes.

At best it will be about 10% faster for CPU-bound tasks, less advantage for tasks which depend on the cache, memory or hard disk.

The extra speed is useful if you are doing things like video conversion or photo processing which need lots of CPU, but for more general use you aren't likely to notice. I never noticed much difference between my 2 GHz Mac Mini and 2.2 GHz MacBook Pro (both Core 2 Duo).

Thanks. For heavy computing/rendering/encoding, I've got my Mac Pro. This new mini will replace my AppleTV and if I'm using it for media, will I notice a difference in say playing huge 1080p mkv files?

Bear in mind that the US site is not advertised with tax as their taxing system varies across from state to state. A while back I also thought the same, but if you add tax to the US prices it should be close to the local prices in the Netherlands.

We can hope.

All things considered, £649 is the most ridiculous pricing I've seen from Apple.

Assuming that VAT in the UK is 18%, this equates to £117 the government draws. This means the mac mini is £523, or roughly $771. It's $72 more expensive but I think that is reasonable if you take the difference in commodity prices between the US and UK.

No Content = HDMI fail

All be it a lovely machine, no HD Content (other than a couple of TV shows) in the UK in iTunes Store, no UK Netflix and NO BLU-RAY...

please give UK some HD Content and i will be – the AppleTV and iPad have it!

So count it out then! What number did you get?

It's obvious who's the douche here. The GPU is fine to play casual games and even high bitrate 1080p movies.
Honestly even the old 9400m is good enough for your movie watching needs.
The inclusion of dedicated GPU will result in more heat and power requirement.

Nobody is a douche for simply stating facts.
It's not "good enough" if you can get a three times faster GPU for a very small price increase. Instead we get a very high price increase and still no decent GPU. Integrated GPUs are and have always been a necessity in the mobile space, where power consumption is everything, but this is not a laptop. By the way, more heat and power requirements didn't stop Apple from putting a dedicated GPU in an Apple TV, of all devices!

Starting at 799 euro... they must be kidding. 699 dollars + 20% VAT makes 684 euro!
Though I must say that I spent 899 for my mini back in 2006.

I think that he's saying that the prices before were:

$599 in the US without sales tax
€599 in the NL with VAT

Now, the prices are:

$699 in the US without tax
€799 in the NL with VAT

So the US goes up $100 (plus tax), and the NL goes up €200 (incl.tax).

Currently, $100 = €82, so why the difference in the relative increase in price?

Not defending apple here, I absolutely agree with you, but I just calculated the price difference between the US and UK and it's $72. I'll repeat that if you take the difference in commodity prices between the two countries it would be reasonable, i.e. an average cup of coffee in the US may cost $2 while in the UK may cost £2.

edit: oh, I was looking at the previous model pricing. Since they increased the pricing linearly (though twice the figure in the NL) the difference would be a bit larger...

Sales tax is only going to add $50-60 to the price in the US. The real bitch is VAT in Europe, for which there is no US equivalent (see also: why the US is in debt to China). So you're looking at $750 in the US and $850 in Europe, 100 of which goes to supporting the various socialist economies which protect against foreign imports by generating revenue to line bureaucrats' pockets. Don't blame Apple.

Tax in the Netherlands is still the same so help me here

Are you saying the tax in America got 115,- dollars higher? (100,- euro's)

MacMini V's MacBook

Just sayin' those pricepoints are kinda too close, but then all Apple structure seems to be just that little bit extra for a bit more – repeat to fade...

Yeah but by that analogy the £ and $ amounts should be the same...?

Why don't you look at the 13" MBP internals on iFixit and report back to us on exactly where a dGPU and additional fan could possibly go, since that also uses the C2D+320M combo.

Why the silly hypebole?
Are you really comparing a Mini to a LAPTOP to make your point? Jeez. Cognitive dissonance at its best.
Edit: Let me point out that a MBP consists of 50% battery, which more than makes up for the internal PSU.

But even if I pick up that nonsense:
Maybe you should take a look at the internals of a 15" MBP, which isn't any bigger in size than a Mini. There's the GPU! See!

In a more realistic approach, I could argue that no one, including you, would have cared even the slightest amount of shred if the case were 0.3" higher for a better cooling system and the power consumption 10-15W higher under GPU load. You'd be raving how good the Mini is as a gaming machine now. And that it would all make perfect sense with Steam on the Mac and all...

VAT is 17.5%, so £649 without VAT would be ~£535.425

535.425 GBP = 790.379 USD, versus 699 USD

So even with VAT taken out, how is that extra margin justified? The costs of operation argument doesn't cut it. Every country outside of the US seems to be seeing large hikes compared to the US price.

I agree it looks great, HDMI is good to see too and it's fantastic that they're continuing to produce the mini, BUT no blu-ray (even as a CTO) using the C2D and 320M (descibed as "next-generation NVIDIA GeForce 320M" on the website) is not good at all, especially with the price increase!

They'll have to do better, my current Mac mini sitting under my TV running PLEX is safe, this update is not compelling enough based on the above.

VAT or no VAT, the price is still too high. It should not cost $690 in US and it should absolutely not cost close to $1000 i Sweden. It's much too much in all markets.
