So mcuh for waiting for the updated version. I'm off now to try to find an old Macmini in the shop. €799 for an entry level Mac? Have Apple gone totally nuts? If they had put 4 GB RAM and a 500 GB harddisk as standard but with these two added options the price is €979. I want a Macmini, but not for any price. For a thousand euros I can get a quad core PC, with 24" screen and 1.5 TB harddisk and still have change.

Computers should get cheaper and have more power, Apple is trying to rewrite the rules

not to mention that they're pushing it as an HTPC...

It will make a great HTPC. Throw XMBX/BOXEE on it = AWESOME
However, for me $699 is a bit to expensive for an HTPC,

If I was to use it as my daily machine, after upgrading the ram, adding a keyboard, mouse, remote. I might as well just get an iMac

I like the old design better. I hate Apple's cold ass black and alum design right now. BRING BACK WHITE POLY! And the price increase and rather useless SD card are kind of disappointing.

But, still makes me wonder if I should ditch the Macbook I wanna get and go with an iPad/Mini attack.

keep an eye on the refurb page, they might dump the old ones up there for a few hundred bucks cheaper.

Well that's clearly what they're thinking but they're wrong - especially if they want to push this beast as a media centre PC.

Digital download might be the future, but if you want good 1080p video then either blu-ray or warez'd copies of blu rays are the present. And so people have the choice between inferior itunes downloads, warez, or buying one of those Dell boxes that also go under the TV, include blu-ray and cost about the same as the new mini.

Itunes HD Video can't compete in its current format. They compress the heck out of it. :(

Its seems Apple is pushing this new Mac Mini as a Media Center for all us geeks, while they are preparing the upcomming AppleTV for everybody else.

I expect Front Row on the Mac Mini will be unified/replaced with AppleTV's interface once its released this fall.

MacMini = full featured nettop computer = geeks
AppleTV = iOS/A4, streaming content = everyone else

that's what i'm thinking. wife and I have work issued laptops and except for my light gaming they only do the internet. the price of MacBook Pro's is ridiculous. for the same price you can get a mini and an ipad that you can also take anywhere

I bet the computer you are talking about is at least 15x bigger.

I made this picture almost two years ago to predict what the MacMini update looks like, It's kinda close to the new one now!

some of us have perfectly working monitors and i prefer Microsoft's keyboards and mice. the Apple ones are the cheapest crap you can buy. nice hardware but crappy accessories.

at work i got a nice MS wireless mouse where the batteries recharge so i don't have to keep on replacing them

I'd love to get one but it's a bit expensive. I really like that it has a built in power supply!

Just went to the website, tricked it out to the max incl. apple care and the numeric keyboard:

$ 1,647

As somebody wrote already, better value in a MPB, especially if you go to the refurb store.

So, waiting another 3/4 months, although it's almost so perfect that a refresh will not come for quite some time.

Gorgeous, gorgeous, want one, but not at this price and it better have blue ray on the next update.

Please remember that some people were just in the market for a cheap mac. While the small form factor may be a great feature for some .. for others - arguably the majorit - it is not much of a feature, aka doesn't justify the higher pricepoint.
It is not like there is a comparable mac computer with similar specs, yet bigger formfactor for less money .. the mini was the only choice available and that got pretty much cut.

That's funny, as just this month my PC magazine reviewed the 1st USB3 external drives. Amazingly fast.

As I say it's odd, as Apple are normally the one who take the LEAP with new connectors/speeds and others (PC World) may eventually catch up.

Seems strange to not to fit the latest on a brand new model, that's all.

Im not talking about HDDs. Im talking about actual motherboard support.

At the moment there's no native support, whatsoever. USB3 on the enthusiast boards are using a separate NEC chip.

Mac Mini (2,4 Ghz, 2GB SDRAM) + Wireless keyboard + Magic Mouse + Apple Cinema Display = 1765,99€

iMac = 1102,00€

Oh, but maybe the point is that you can carry the Mac Mini...

Then:

Mac Mini (2,4 Ghz, 2GB SDRAM) + 2x Wireless keyboard + 2x Magic Mouse + 2x Apple Cinema Display = 2752,99€

2x iMac = 2204,00€

Mac Mini with Snow Leopard Server is an astounding value compared to the standard model. Disregard for the moment it includes the server version of the software, the storage upgrade is 2x500gb vs 320gb, the memory is 4gb vs 2gb, there is a processor bump and yes you loose the optical drive.
On my home (aka work) network I have two work machines plus a Mac Mini plugged into the TV (Front Row + Apple Remote). All these computers use the same central storage, a 2TB NAS drive.

I've been thinking about replacing the Mini and NAS drive with a Mini Server, but I'd have to add external firewire storage since the internal 1TB is not enough. Considering my setup, wouldn't I do just as fine with a standard Mac Mini with a 2TB firewire drive attached? I mean, what does the Server version offer apart from the (redundant) larger storage capacity? It's not like I need the inter-office features like intranet iChat. All I need is a shared directory or two. Does the Server version even have Front Row (weird request but like I said, it would double as my multimedia hub)?

the Apple ones are the cheapest crap you can buy.

And Microsoft's keyboards aren't?

I can't tell you how many times I've had the N key stop working on a Microsoft Keyboard. Yes its always the N key. On the cheapo $20 one, on their Ergonomic one, On their Gamer one.

Guess what, this Apple Keyboard is still working.....
