You can't have your cake and eat it too

The Intel/Nvidia spat has reduced Apple to choose between OpenCL with a decent graphics processor or an underwhelming Intel IGP that doesn't support OpenCL.

I think the choice is obvious, but it has become apparent in this thread that not many people understand why it is this way.

Messed up pricing

I just priced a new Mac Mini as an alternative to the new iMac I was planning:
- Mini, 4gb memory, 320gb disk = €1024
- iMac, 4gb memory, 320gb disk = €1099

so for €75 extra I get a faster processor (3.0 vs 2.6ghz), a screen, a keyboard, and a mouse. The other difference is a GeForce 320M (Mini) vs GeForce 9400M (iMac); I think the latter is slower but don't know the relative speeds.

Step up to 8gb memory and the Mini becomes €1384 whereas the iMac is €1279.

What to do.

Apple Store back up in the US, nothing changed. (relative to when it went back down again, not to the first time around obviously haha).

Buy the iMac , of course :)

That's the Mac mini I always wanted to see!!! HDMI finally, cool new slim design, double of memory size, faster graphic card!! I couldn't ask for more from such a basic all around device!!!

If only...

If this only had blu-ray. Big bag of hurt my ars. I bought a mini two years ago and would have gladly bought a second if blu-ray was included. What a perfect media hub this would make. Add blu-ray to this device, replace front row with the Apple TV interface and then you have a box people would buy for their TV.

Media is the next frontier Steve, make the leap. No one is going to download HD movies for $5 bucks when Redbox give you the same product for $1. No one will buy an HD movie on ATV when storage and back up cost are so high. Come on, one more baby step. Your making enough money with the iPad and will I'm sure do the same with iPhone 4. Pay the licensing fee, it will only hurt a little while.

on second thought if you compare this with WinTel it's a nice price. At Best Buy the cheapest PC with a decent graphics chip other than integrated Intel is like $650. on HP.com it's $689 for a Pavilion PC with a 512MB graphics. Add in Windows 7 Ultimate to make the software easier to compare and it's $879.

What feature exactly are you missing in the included Win7 Home Premium version, that you need to buy the most expensive and complete Windows version out there to "make the software easier to compare"?

I think nobody should buy this thing for the specs ... the price is not even funny.
The only reason to look into byuing, is that you (or probably your wife/girlfriend) will not accept one of those blunt, huge and noisy PCs in the living room.

Please, all Europeans keep in mind that you have a VAT which goes into the price of your stuff before you buy. In the U.S. we have a much smaller sales tax which goes on after the quoted price.
VAT or no VAT, the new price still doesn't make any sense.

Old Mac Mini = 599 USD / 5995 SEK
New Mac Mini = 699 USD / 7995 SEK

USD vs SEK when the old Mini was released = 1 USD / 8.56 SEK
USD vs SEK when the new Mini was released = 1 USD / 7.87 SEK

Prices incl 25% VAT should've been:

Old Mac Mini = 6409 SEK (+416)
New Mac Mini = 6876 SEK (-1119)

Get it? The USD has dropped against the SEK since March 2009.
The new price is based on an imaginary USD that's worth almost 10 SEK, 20% over reality.

I was going to buy a mini, but the price has put me off, atleast here in norway, its quite alot of more expensive then the last model.

Also the price for the macbook is only 200 dollars more here in norway, so it seems weird.

I dont like where mac mini is priced at the moment, seems to expensive for a htpc, and bad speccs for a serious computer.

Mac Mini with Snow Leopard Server is an astounding value compared to the standard model. Disregard for the moment it includes the server version of the software, the storage upgrade is 2x500gb vs 320gb, the memory is 4gb vs 2gb, there is a processor bump and yes you loose the optical drive.

For you PC converts and newer Macheads who are still fixated on specs themselves, this is a no brainer!

Looks amazing, but I don't like that the price has gone up.. Hopefully we'll see imac upgrades aswell..

Yup getting one too later this summer. Just one question, since I don't have a computer monitor at home, will the HDMI port work out of the box ? as in can I do all the initial stuff just by plugging it to my TV ?

Its also good to know Apple is finally adopting an HDMI port, honestly it should have been available ages ago.. hoping to see it on the newer imacs aswell..

So because it happend for a very limited number of devices of a single model, it's suddenly "often" a bad thing?

I was using the Time Capsule power supply problem as a pertinent example since it's roughly the same size as the new mini, has a power supply that crapped out and it was far from 'very limited number'. I'm on my third.

I could have also used the early iMac G5 power supply problems, numerous PowerMac PSU failures, Airport Express power supplies going pop in less than two years (blown two personally), Airport Base Station PSUs, G4 era Cinema display PSUs...

Excuse me for being nervous about Apple's history of PSU failure but I don't think putting a PSU in such a small case with other hot components is such a good idea.

The good thing about the external brick is you can replace it easily without having to take your entire computer back to Apple and there's plenty of third party supplies available. If you're in a multi-Mini setup, you can use someone else's supply to get stuff off your Mini. With the new Mini, you're down for longer. In the Mini Server, this is a serious consideration if you're using it as intended. Having a spare external PSU means downtime in minutes when it goes bang instead of days.

I wonder what the Mac Mini colocation hosting companies will think of this new Mini?

Usually prices in the states do NOT include taxes, whereas the contrary happens for European prices (with VAT). That explains it and has been explained over and over again for years now. Hope it helps.

Then explain me why, for instance, Mac Book is 999$ in the US and still 999€ in Italy?

Awesome, next gen Mac mini. Only two things I don't like about it: obviously the higher price, and why couldn't the SDHC slot be in front, and maybe one USB port, too?

Wow, a device that cool with no public announcement and no effort to get it in front of the masses. Apple certainly knows where it wants the public to spend their money.
