just bought one last week but it hasn't been delivered yet...do you think i could be getting one of these instead?

If they would just throw in an eSATA port, it could be the perfect fileserver, HTPC, etc etc...
It already has SATA, I fail to see why they don't just add an eSATA port. Expanding lots of storage capacity via FW800 or USB2.0 is either slow or expensive.

Please remember that some people were just in the market for a cheap mac.
It is also good to remember that Apple isn't in the market for cheap PCs.
While the small form factor may be a great feature for some .. for others - arguably the majorit - it is not much of a feature, aka doesn't justify the higher pricepoint.
It is included. It is part of the price. The rest is subjective.
It is not like there is a comparable mac computer with similar specs, yet bigger formfactor for less money .. the mini was the only choice available and that got pretty much cut.
T.
I would say the iMac... But again, people basically want a cheaper Mac. They like the design, they like MacOS, but don't want to pay for it :)

Total rip off in the UK. :(

€799 in Ireland too.

Sorry but for that price I can pick up an excellent condition iMac 24" with 2 years remaining AppleCare....

Not too sure at that price where the mini now figures in any scheme of things (marketwise). €649 yes, €799 ouch.
It looks great, but you can't get by forever on 'looks alone'....

And again comparing pricing. (ok I know you don't have to buy the extra's but if you did)...

There are also those who are in the market for a not-too-expensive, SFF mac. I was really looking forward to getting a mac mini, but honestly, there's no way I'm forking out 800€ for a HTPC with a 320 GB disk.

Oh, well, I'll just get a Shuttle XS35 and run XBMC instead of Plex :p

Mac Mini (2,4 Ghz, 2GB SDRAM) + Wireless keyboard + Magic Mouse + Apple Cinema Display = 1765,99€
iMac = 1102,00€
What is your point here?
I answered this:
"I bet the computer you are talking about is at least 15x bigger"
to this:
I want a Macmini, but not for any price. For a thousand euros I can get a quad core PC, with 24" screen and 1.5 TB harddisk and still have change.:

Indeed.

If you're in the market for a new monitor, wait for the iMac updates.

Sadly, for those of us that don't like all-in-ones or glossy screens, that's not a solution to the kick in the nuts Apple has just dealt us with the Mac Mini price hike.

Otherwise, you're out of luck. There's no Mac Medium that uses 3.5" hard drives, can use a Core i5, and a discrete GPU.

Another factor in the cost is that Intel isn't dropping the prices of their CPUs, and has a high markup on the lower wattage variants. I'm sure Apple could trim $100 off by using a dual core Pentium at a lower speed, but they wouldn't lower themselves to that.

...or to using a larger enclosure it seems capable of using cheaper more power hungry components.

It's great that they're apparently thinking about the environment and giving people the lowest powered computers made of the greenest materials but unless they're going to make them cheaper, they aren't going to have much of a dent on the mass market.

My first (intel) Mac mini investment was a no-brainer ... real value for money. Upgrading CPU and memory was "do-able" to keep up with leopard and growing media libraries.

Obvious things missing from this version:
value for money
blu-ray
a strategy for the product

I now understand why Steve didn't even present this to the crowds last week as his "...one more thing".

Hope they don't screw up the next gen AppleTV

yea but the 320m's not that great either. I guess mac's are never going to be the choice for gaming. I've tried on my new MBP 15 but I can spend the same sort of money and get a very high end gaming pc. Guess im stuck with a pc for gaming after all.

Nobody beats Apple in design. Johny Ive is a LEGEND!

Hope their hardware department could just wake up.

This is irrelevant to my statement.

Right, which was the oddest thing ever. Apart from being an odd number, too. The smallest Mac had more USB ports than any other Mac, including the Mac Pro. Removing one of them = A) mathematical coherence, and B) justice. ;)

My 2009 mac pro has 5 USB ports. 3 on the back, 2 on the front.

I believe the success with iPhone and iPad has gone to their heads.
What are they smoking when the prices are determined ?

from a meeting at Apple:
- "dude, how much should we charge for the new mini?"
- "tihi, lalala, doobee....." apple guy falls over in the hazy board room.
- "U OK ?"
- "eeehh... yeah, all the way to the bank, WOOOHOOOO!!!"

sizzling sound as the funny stuff is being inhaled ... again
and again
and again
and again
and again
and again
and again
and again

Same here in Germany. They raised ALL prices and new MacMini is 809 Euro!!! WTF. Not a option any more... For that money you get an much better spec'd Notebook...

To make it clear:
700 USD = 570 Euro

809 Euro = 990 USD

Remember that the prices shown in the US store exclude taxes (because of the different tax rates in different States), while the prices in european stores include taxes!

Could someone explain to me how Apple is calculating the prices in Europe? In the US, the mini costs $699 which is approximately €570, lets say €600. When you add the VAT of 19% the price becomes €714. In Germany, we have to pay some €10 to €15 for "Urheberrechtsabgabe", so the total price would be €730. How does Apple come up with €809?

I wonder how well this will run Final Cut Studio 3. Any ideas?

If you're using consumer HD cameras or an SLR with USB I/O I'm sure it will be fine if you are delivering digitally and not to tape. Otherwise your I/O needs will probably overwhelm the single FW port.

Fantastic new little machine, and I think I'm slowly becoming immune to Apples pricing structure.

But to full realise its potential as a set top box replacement, it needs a Blu....

... blooming good revision of its Front Row software.

The improvements to this product in no way justify a $100 price hike. Apple is the only company in the world who would even consider raising their price on a device like this in a terrible worldwide economy.

No chance at that price. It was only two years ago that I was buying a MacBook for around that.

Everything else is near perfect. I love that it's so much shorter than the previous model. But not at that price.

I was expecting the a drop of £100 this time around, since it had crept up so much over the last few years.

It is also good to remember that Apple isn't in the market for cheap PCs.
Well, they kind of were with the mini ..

It is included. It is part of the price. The rest is subjective.
Right .. still it explains why people feel the price is to high .. subjectively (is that even a word?).

I would say the iMac... But again, people basically want a cheaper Mac. They like the design, they like MacOS, but don't want to pay for it :)
I think most people are fine paying a premium for the design and the OS. What people get upset about is the inclusion of a useless feature that has a large impact on the pricetag. Again "useless" being a subjective feeling.

I don't say it was a bad choice for Apple to go that way .. their business model seems to work great for them. I say it was a bad choice to go that way for a lot of customers.

Wirelessly posted (Nokia N70-3 Ireland-Opera: Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 3_0 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/528.18 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0 Mobile/7A341 Safari/528.16)

I want one of these...so beautiful.

Already got an iPhone 4 + ipad on the list though :(

This + Plex...mmmmm

Why is the iMac so cheap?

Why is the Mac Mini so expensive?

It´s like you have to pay lot of extra for not wanting/needing a display. Basically with iMacs you get the display for free!

What´s the logic here?
