My thoughts as well. Oh Apple.

Other than that it looks sweet. Mine's only a few months old and i love it but apple have the ability to make me wish for more. But I'm stronger than that.

I'm stronger.

Yes I am.....

Yes you are....... NOT :D

It's because of their iTunes store. They want you to watch only their hd movies, tv shows etc

Then they should start to offer features like Blu-Rays and not less features, lower resolution, less sound options for the same price that you'd pay for the disk.

Oh well, I guess it's a Dell with Ubuntu for me.

And that's a perfectly valid choice. Ubuntu 10.04 is at least as usable and good looking as Mac OS X Snow Leopard, and it comes with everything that a consumer needs.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (Linux; U; Android 2.2; en-gb; Nexus One Build/FRF50) AppleWebKit/533.1 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0 Mobile Safari/533.1)

Now that is one sleek looking machine! Stunning.

Does this spell the end of the AppleTV as we know it??

Damn, I like this!

It's very obviously now part of the industrial design chic that Apple does so well and although some may complain about it's internal architecture, it's still no slouch. That 320M is a good card and the HDMI is icing on the cake.

However, it's really got me wondering where the AppleTV is headed now. Unless something very "Magical" comes out of Cupertino in the near future my next AppleTV is going to be a Mac Mini with something like Plex.

I have to agree with other comments. A good upgrade, but a little disappointing in a few areas.

Positives:
  • Of course it looks beautiful — it's Apple.
  • Built-in power supply is a big plus when you're trying to reduce clutter. (You never saw that power brick pictured in any of the old promo shots!)
  • HDMI is nice too. (I use an adapter cable currently with my home theatre setup.)

Negatives:
  • The price. (Personally, I would have accepted a larger box with a cheaper price tag.)
  • Still no Blue-ray. (Apple just has to understand that people still buy movies on disk. Withholding Blue-ray isn't going to switch us all to buying movies from the iTunes store.)
  • No front ports. (I know, ports at the front would be ugly, but a USB port at the front would make it a lot tidier to sync all those iGadgets. On our HT Mac mini, we have an iPod cable that just lives on this machine, so we're not forever fumbling around at the back of the machine, accidentally pulling out cables, etc.)

It sure looks Appleesque. That is a good thing.

It needs i3 processor, tho. especially for that price.

809,- Euros in germany. Yeah, Apple....thanks but no. Go milking people for money elsewhere.

If it hat blu-ray so it could be used as a media center....but like this.

And that's a perfectly valid choice. Ubuntu 10.04 is at least as usable and good looking as Mac OS X Snow Leopard, and it comes with everything that a consumer needs.

Useability and looks of Ubuntu is quite good but nowhere near OS X in my opinion. Open source development does not pull in one direction, everybody have their own opinion and spend time developing what they want. This is why Ubuntu or any Linux distro will never be the one-size-fits-all desktop.

Amazing that no one has mentioned the USB ports.

Apple are always said to be the ones that lead the industry and fit new things whilst others catch up from behind.

And yet they have fitted USB2 ports when everyone else is just starting to move over to USB3 with is massive speed increase.

Very odd thing to do for Apple.

Crap graphics chip, well, yes, that's normal or course :(

Love the design and the HDMI!

But the price is ridiculous, given the specs. I'll wait for a new iMac then after all.

UK £649 US $699 plus tx (say $750) at todays exchange rate that is £131 ($190) more the the US including tax.

After seeing the price of the iPhone 4 not a great day for us trying to buy Apple products. :(

Sorry but the above maths is wrong.

UK Price £649 less the VAT comes out at £552.34
£552.34 converts to $814.35 before tax
US price $699 before tax

That gives a difference of $115.35 which is roughly 17% difference. Now we normally pay about 7% extra in the UK as the additional cost of doing business here but the extra 10% is extracting the urine somewhat. Shame because it's a lovely machine and I was in the market for a Mini but no way at that price. Even with my education discount it's far far too expensive.

The server on the other hand is a really really nice bit of kit for the money.

At least the price tag tells us why it wasn't in the keynote last week. SJ doesn't like to get "booed".

yea but the 320m's not that great either. I guess mac's are never going to be the choice for gaming. I've tried on my new MBP 15 but I can spend the same sort of money and get a very high end gaming pc. Guess im stuck with a pc for gaming after all.

Nobody beats Apple in design. Johny Ive is a LEGEND!

Hope their hardware department could just wake up.

The Mac Mini is not supposed to be a gaming machine. Although I agree with you on the higher-end laptops. 15"/17" MacBook Pros should have a much better option.

Back on topic- this is a flipping awesome update! :D

nice update...glad i waited. now to find a nice 46" tv to complement it...

This is so stupid. Sure the new design is very impressive, but the mini's major problem has always been its high price, and now they've just made it even more unaffordable- $699! (£649!!)

Entry level mac, my ass. I'd be ten times happier if they dropped the price to $499 and made the savings by using a plastic enclosure. Comparatively spec'd Dell computers start at under $300! On offer today at $639 you can get a small form-factor Dell with windows 7, a Quad Core Intel Core 2, 6 GB of RAM and a 750GB HDD!

I don't know who Apple designed and priced this machine for, other than Apple fans. Nobody else is going to buy it.

i3 vs. core 2 duo = NOT THAT BIG OF A DIFFERENCE ANYWAYS! I would much rather have the 320m than the intel IGP which is UTTERLY SLOW! I had the 17" i7 2.66ghz macbook pro and while I used the intel IGP it was MUCH slower than the 9400m from my mac mini.

I returned the mac mini and picked up the 2.4GHz, 4GB RAM, 320m nvidia 13" macbook pro for $999 at microcenter (this deal is looking better everyday!).

But the new mac mini does look sleek and I know that the 320m isnt as good as the dedicated gpus for video games BUT the 320m is a VERY powerful GPU especially for an integrated one! It pretty much performs on par with the 9600m gt from the previous generation macbook pros and that is a dedicated card!

Now I can run all my 12gb+ mkv files via plex without it losing any frames or stuttering in fast moving or demanding scenes like it did on the previous generation mac mini with the nvidia 9400m. Since the new mac mini has the same specs as the 13" base macbook pro with the 320m card, it should have no problems at all with anything you throw at it!

Trust me, I just came from the 17" i7 2.66GHz macbook pro and comparing it to the 13" macbook pro with the 320m, I dont notice any difference while using OSX. Even with 9 spaces and vmware fusion running, the animation is buttery smooth and fluid with no choppiness from the plex player as well running in dual monitor mode! Now this mac mini is going to be VERY impressive.

The only part that angers me is why couldnt apple released this mac mini a week ago?? I could have bought this (which would still be $400) less after the student discount as the 13" mbp that I just bought while being able to drive 2x 23" monitors would have been sweet.

I do love my 13" macbook pro but now I'm contemplating on buying this mac mini as my htpc as I'm getting tired of connecting and disconnecting my macbook pro from my hdtv. But then again, I do agree with most people here that the price is pretty high for an htpc.

Has Apple posted an update to the new mac mini's warranty online? I am anxious to see if they have finally nixed the user-serviceable HDD swap or not...

I just want to make sure that I have this right. The new Mini:

- Finally has the $1 worth of parts involved in a SD card slot, but they put it on the wrong end of the machine.

- Takes what was "The mot affordable Mac Ever" up to an all time high entry point of $700, right in the middle of a worldwide recession.

I just don't know what to say other than wow, what a rip off. Oh wait! it comes in a unibody case! But you know what - I could care less. Using a unibody case on a desktop serves no practical purpose except raising the cost of the unit, and therefore the price. I would rather that apple announced that it is now an all plastic case, but the price is back to $500. Now that would have been a real improvement.

I had really hoped that Apple would have had something for those of us who are not rich this time. Oh well, I guess it's a Dell with Ubuntu for me.

Then this was never marketed towards you in the first place. Apple isn't looking to dominate the market with cheap alternatives. None of this should be news to you.

Why is the SD card input on the back?

For aesthetic reasons. How often do you use it anyway? Why not put all the ports on the front in that case?

Sexy!

Good access panel, (I remember having to buy a spatula to open up my old G4 mini) and an internal power brick! HDMI is a welcome addition too.

The size and capability shift this into the market of "what the Apple TV should be" letting the Apple TV become this cloud based dongle we're all hearing so much about. If the PS3 in my house wasnt such a good media streamer, I would definatley be buying one to put under my TV!
