New Mac Mini Finally Coming in October Alongside New iPads?

I would not be surprised if they drop the Mac mini. Apple will focus on becoming a handset/tablet company over the next 10 years. It's easy money for them.

I'm confused about this too. For me, 8 hours of encoding video won't put the fans over 2000RPM. I literally never hear my Mini unless I manually bump up the fan speed.

Owner for ~2 years who keeps their environment as quiet as possible.

Edit: I suppose I do hear the hard drive clicks sometimes.
Really, I just ran an overnight Compressor run. Prores 720p to H264 720p, 13 files in total, 7 hours of video. That fan was buzzing along at 5100 rpm all night.

Its about time, i would love this. But what about the credibility of this? It says that "macrumors have gotten words about apple that the mac mini will be released in october".

Do you guys think it's true?

From what I hear, it's just a rumor. Take it with a grain of salt. :D

Do not play with my emotions

This is literally the only thing I want Apple to do. Give me a new mac mini. MR do not play with my emotions. My family does not want to see me crying about disappointment regarding a computer. The only thing worse would be an updated mini in an upgrade proof super slim format.

Come on Apple. Once you unscrew iOS8, you're getting my money for an iP6 for my kid. I've got more $$ waiting for you if you'd only give daddy the mini he wants. Plus I'm old and I don't ask for much.

What would be cool is if they can make the Mac mini as big as the Apple TV. Just not as thin as some of the other things they've been making. Who knows, they may be headed down that path too.

I figured that's what the delay was probably tied to, and it requires Broadwell to do this, thus the delay. We shall see. Maybe a stopgap in the current form factor with late-model Haswells?

Please for the love of god have one with a dedicated GPU again.

Careful what you wish for... I had the first iteration, which touted a dedicated GPU ATI 9200 if I recall... running with a 1.42 Ghz PowerPC Processor.

But, Apple took shortcuts. They had purchased the cards, but at a discount, meaning ATI had disabled some functions on the cards. At least, that is what ATI told me when I had inquired to them about a driver update. Apple further took it a step by underclocking the graphics card.

So, relatively cool temperatures, but because of the underclocking, and outdated firmware/drivers, there were graphical anomalies on any resolution larger than 1024x768 using DVI.

Personally, for what it is, the latest graphics from Intel chipsets are a good step forward. Would I play 3D games on such a system? No, never. But for the simple stuff, video playback, it's good enough.

The timing of such an update would be a bit odd, as it is unclear what processors Apple would use in these machines. Next-generation Broadwell processors from Intel appropriate for the Mac mini are not scheduled to arrive until early next year, and the current Haswell processors are no longer cutting edge as Intel has been forced to prolong their shelf life due to continued delays with Broadwell.

Perhaps an opening salvo by putting an A8X in there instead?

I bought a mini like a month ago. I knew a new model was coming, but I didn't want want to wait just to find out that it would have non upgradeable memory or drives...

Why are you comparing a PC to a mobile device? Every desktop or laptop Apple has ever released has been configurable and/or upgradeable.

a bit taller, one GFX card, lesser versions of Xeon and I'd be 1st in line

No way. Then it's be too much of a competitor with the Mac pro. It's gotta stay more neutered. But I guess we can cross our fingers and keep wishing. I'd be in line for a graphically-capable Mac mini too.

Probably not. The Mac mini has never mimicked the Power Mac/Mac Pro design. Not saying it couldn't, but based on past designs, I'd say no.

I was talking about the announcement style, not the physical design. i.e. Tell everyone now, release later.

A Mac Pro design is unlikely, but you never know. The Mac Pro is taller than it is wide for cooling. The Airport Extreme is taller than it is wide for wifi signal forming. Both would benefit the Mini, and result is less desk area used. If they have the same shape, maybe the same look will follow. The flattened, dog bowl look doesn't seem quite so likely.

Oh, if only they'd forget their size fetish and redesign it so it could handle a decent desktop quad core CPU.

You might want to wait for the Mac Maxi. I mean, they kind of tipped their hand on their intentions when they named it the Mac Mini, didn't they?

It's kinda sad how the Mac Pro is currently the only surviving Mac with a desktop GPU.

----------

The MacPro reminded fully upgradable despite almost total doubt. We won't know until release it seems.

Lets leave the wild senseless guesses to the Analysts.

The GPUs in the new Mac Pro are not upgradeable.
