The Menu bar is at the top. Tell me which one is easier to read.

Well... alright I can see what your issue is NOW... that sure is one trippy backround image... I guess if you are usin a background image like that, it can be annoying. SO now i understand what the issue is.

My question is, how can you use a background image like that all day? Even if menu bar wasnt transparent i still couldn't stand looking at it for long periods of times, and im generally not sensitive to headaches.

P.S thank you for showing me such an obvious example of how it is a problem

To me, the issue isn't the translucent menu bar. It's the translucent windows and palates and menus. Sometimes the foremost window/menu is completely unreadable because of interference from background. And it really doesn't add anything to the experience; knowing what's behind a window doesn't help me because I can't click on it or drag to it or otherwise interact with it. And if I really want to see what's there, just one click of expose will do it. Stacks are similarly useless. It's analogous to having a stack of papers on my desk unlabeled, vs. having them in a manila folder with a label. Icons have gone to the crapper as well - hard to tell the applications folder from the documents folder from the movies folder. This is a complete departure from the standard set around OS8 where folders didn't have to look like folders any more, you could have a treble clef for your music files and a dollar sign for your financial files. These are serious gui design flaws, and someone needs to admit they goofed and go back to a more standard convention.

iTunes and more ...

I sure hope this will fix my itunes problem, i start itunes up and then i have to leave it alone for 5 minutes otherwise it will go in to does not respond, if i do touch the mac while its starting even other apps will freeze like ichat and finder, grrr bring it on and make it good please

I just want to know when they are either going to make the downloads folder and any other user added 'stack folder' icons static or at least make them editable. Most of this other cosmetic stuff is not a bother for me.

I've got only one problem, which I hope will be fixed with 10.5.2!
When I open up the lid of my 2,2 MBP to wake up from sleep mode the screen sometimes stays black... This is SO annoying!
Please Apple fix this!

2) Blue orbs for indicating when applications are open... well for starters theres a program i downloaded, it allowed me to adjust stuff like the dock color (notice MY dock is black which btw looks amazingly sharp) but anyways i find those blue orbs as easy to see as the triangles were in Tiger.. then again i never had difficulties telling of a program was open...
Do I have enhanced vision over everyone else in the world or something?

The default "Aurora" wallpaper has stars that look like orbs. Imagine a wallpaper featuring just stars. It could get confusing if these stars ended up behind the dock.

You also used a dark modified dock in your example. Hardly the best example to use to prove orb visibility in extreme cases. The default dock out of the box looks like this: http://arstechnica.com/reviews/os/mac-os-x-10-5.ars/4

By the way, whether you think menu translucency affects readability, you'd think that for pure aesthetic reasons, they should at least allow you to disable it. I may love the "Aqua Graphite" wallpaper, but not the shade of the blue that the translucent menu bar takes on with that image.

Anyone out there know if they'll be updating iSync and/or adding additional profiles in 10.5.2?

Who cares about updating iSync? I want it FIXED first. Currently (10.5.1) iXync cannot sync address book - only ical - and cannot even reflect changes made to address book groups. No fun at all. I'm hoping 10.5.2 will let me sync my mobile phone again.

ok

how bout you guys hurry up on this update an stop posting update news for all of the hype of BS>

How about a list of bug fixes for 10.5.2 Server? Obviously, the dock is not a priority for the server version. Any word on them fixing the AFP issue? I have clients that want Leopard Server for iCal Server, etc..

Agreed.

The bugs in leopard client are bad, but the AFP (and others) bugs in Leopard server are a disgrace.

Apple needs to get their act together on quality.

Anyway, we tried Leopard Server on a test computer and it was just way too buggy. We really would like to cut over too, but Apple needs a serious bug fix for the server...

Fingers crossed...

OS X.5.1- bugs

I have to say that OS X.5 hit me with a couple painful bugs that I, in the past, never came to expect from Apple. The most crippling one was the continuos dropping of wireless connectivity when using certain third party wireless hubs. The second painful bug was the inability to print to my new Epson printer via my (Snow) AirPort Extreme. These two bugs wasted many hours futilely attempting to debug the issues before discovering that they were somewhat known bugs. I'm comforted that they are supposed to be fixed in this update, it can't be soon enough.

As for the people defending the transparent menu bar, if you want to use it that's your prerogative. It is heavily background dependent though, and saying that the problem is with the user is pathetically fanboyish and myopic, allowing user choice should have always been an option and Apple is doing the right thing to do so.

Posted by flyinmac: Yes, they were. Just like every other business decision they've made for the last 3 years, their one and only thought was: "Oooh, Pretty"

the wallpapers, but especially that menu-bar isn't pretty, isn't functional, isn't consistent. it's only different, and lame.
:)

I couldn't agree more, and have you seen the horrendous bug in which Software Update Service on 10.5.1 server re-caches ALL the updates every 12 hours. We're talking about 7-10GB of updates being re-downloaded from Apple twice a day....that makes an impact on the network...

Thankfully no. We never had SUS running long enough to see that. I got Leopard Server installed on a test machine with Netboot/NetInstall working and then focused on the AD/OD stuff and found out how many problems there were with it. Then we just put it aside till that is fixed and left our Tiger server running. We really want to go to Leopard to use the new Wiki/blog services (blojsom in Tiger is awful to administer) and the iCal server. Maybe by the end of Feb. we can have Leopard server where it should be for a production environment.

Waiting is ok for some clients, but I have others that recently bought or are needing to buy the new XServes. I don't want to have them go out and buy copies of Tiger Server for their new servers when Leopard is already included. They need to just fix things.
