In the case of "I don't like the dock" or "I don't like the translucent menu bar", Apple should offer users the choice.

It's an individual preference.

While I like the translucent menu bar, it looks disgusting when paired with certain colours/patterns.

I don't mind the dock, but I'd welcome some more customisation features - like how they're improving stacks.

Please please pretty please fix the bittorent related KP in the airport driver on intel macs built in N.

I really really want to go back to using wireless for Azureus.

The bitrate required for DVD playback just isn't possible over Wireless connections.

Maybe not over 802.11b connections, but 802.11a, 802.11g and 802.11n connections would have no problem unless the connection was poor or saturated, and possibly caching within the AppleTV would help here.

DVD max bitrate is 10.08mbps. That's typically 6-8mbps of video and audio on top. I don't know if the AppleTV can actually decode that high a bitrate to be honest, if it can do 5mbps H.264 I imagine it should be able to do DVD, even in software given it has a 1GHz CPU.

However for streaming High Definition media from BluRay or HD-DVD drives? No way - too much bandwidth required (>40mbps in the specifications), and I somehow think a device that is specced for 5mbps H.264 would have issues with 30mbps H.264 anyway.

I've never anticipated an OS update as badly as this one! Even though Leopard is fairly solid for me, it looks like a lot of the little annoyances might get fixed this time around.

And a graphic driver update? Oh wow, maybe this will smooth things out for us poor integrated graphic folks.

Glow bubbles are fine :)
And if you the transparent menu bar bugs you so much, then maybe use one of the older wallpapers that came with OSX? Or edit them so they have a uniform stripe on top?

if you have less then perfect eyes then those little light blue bubbles on a light colored background are hard to see.

Apple should have allowed you the option to select a transparent menu bar or not from the get go, one should not have to edit something that Apple should have supplied the option to set, this should not be up to the user to do.

Apple is to closed minded about users maybe wanting their OS to look different then everyone else's, they should have the options to do so without having to resort to editing anything, but Apple has never gave the user the option to do so until 10.5.2 (maybe)

If you go to Discussions.apple.com you'll find all kinds of graphics card complaints including ATI Radeon 9600s and X800s, not to mention that almost all Nvidia cards have issues in Leopard too, especially with Powermac G4s.

Hopefully, this Leopard Graphics Update will fix all of these issues.

so far i haven't had a single issue out of my Geforce2 MX in my Digital audio, and to top it off Leopard is running on a 533mhz DA.

the only real issue i have seen on a AGP G4s is with a flashed Geforce 6x00 7x00 ( 4 - 8 minute boot freeze) and this is a issue with the heat sensor kext file in Leopard. when you remove the kext file it will work fine.

but that dont explain the GFX issues other been having like corrupt video, system lockups, or other video card related issues on intel or PPC systems with ATI or Nvidia video cards.

An Intel PIII 650 MHz decoded DVD's and divx 3.1 files just fine. The CPU used in Apple TVs is quite likely capable of displaying several DVDs at once. I just bought the cheapest DVD player I could find (40€) and it plays MPEG-4/AVC just fine (aka H.264). It would really surprise me if it had anything fancy under the hood...

From a technical standpoint there are some wireless solutions which would provide sufficient bandwith for streaming DVDs over the air, but as you said those solutions only work under conditions better than "poor". In my experience wireless performance is usually quite disappointing - I simply don't believe that DVD playback is possible over 802.11g under non-optimal conditions. 54 Mbit gross performance results in less than 10 Mbit net performance in reality...

But even if Apple would consider it an option, it's far more likely they will equip the next generation with DVD or HD drives. If they come up with the wireless solution which was proposed on this thread, people might wonder why they didn't buy a DVD-player in the first place.

Hard to imagine people (other than the legally blind) with worse eye sight than mine.

Well, yeah.

This and every other Leopard update until they fix the Kerberos/Open Directory/Active Directory problems. That is keeping me from deploying Leopard in my Mac Labs. I could care less about translucent/transparent menu bars and other 'stacks' options if I can't manage all the machines I have from my server.:mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad:

Please Apple give us a fix for this very important problem in the Education/Corporate environment!!! After that you can continue tinkering with the menubar!!!

I couldn't agree more, and have you seen the horrendous bug in which Software Update Service on 10.5.1 server re-caches ALL the updates every 12 hours. We're talking about 7-10GB of updates being re-downloaded from Apple twice a day....that makes an impact on the network...

WD MyBook thingamajig. I guess that must be it! I'll still check it out when the new seed gets released, if not I'll use another drive.

My WD MyBook was screwed up from the start with Time Machine. No matter what I did, I could not get a complete TM backup. I bought a Maxtor drive and it went right through without a single problem.

I have a mybook USB hard disk that seems to work fine with time machine. The only real problem with it is that it is sometimes not recognized on boot/resume from sleep. This though happens on windows as well (before I made it a TM disc).

We're all waiting for this update. I think I'll get my retail disc once they stamp the 10.5.2 or later ones.

Sorry if this is an obvious question, but how do we know when the retail disc is updated? I've been waiting to get Leopard, but am wondering if I should wait longer, and if so, whether waiting makes any difference in the long run. Just less hassles out of the gate?

They usually update the packaging to reflect the updated version.

Here's a picture of my retail box version of Tiger 10.4.3

A DVD player certainly wouldn't be anything as fancy as any kind of general purpose CPU such as an x86 chip. It would have a chip dedicated to hardware decoding of DVD CODECs. That's all a DVD player needs to do.

A general purpose CPU is required for the ATV because it's running a full preemptive multitasking OS.

Reading these posts is getting me to thinking...

You apple fans are difficult to please OR borderline blind.

Im gonna give my opinion on some things i been hearing and i'd love to know why it is that im not having any of these problems?

1) Can't read menu bar dur to transparency... wtf? are you serious? FOR starters the transparency is EXTREMELY subtle, heck i can only tell its transparent when im looking for it.. heres a screenshot, maybe my version of leopard if different?

Alright, see that screenshot i took that seconds ago... now your HONESTLY tellin me you cant EASILY read the text on that menu bar? I purposely picked a pictures of history menu cause that one has lots of text.
Please someone tell me what everyones problem is... i HONESTLY don't understand...

2) Blue orbs for indicating when applications are open... well for starters theres a program i downloaded, it allowed me to adjust stuff like the dock color (notice MY dock is black which btw looks amazingly sharp) but anyways i find those blue orbs as easy to see as the triangles were in Tiger.. then again i never had difficulties telling of a program was open...
Do I have enhanced vision over everyone else in the world or something?

3) Issues with programs crashing?... maybe it's cause i have a fairly high end laptop. It's a 2.0Ghz core 2 duo, 2Gb of RAM... maybe that extra ram really helps leopard run well...
ONLY program i've had randomly crash is safari, and that is only when im closing a safari window and that window has flash video running in it, in THIS case, it still only occurs about 1/5 of the time

I hate to sound like one of those Apple fanboys who will defend ANY crap apple throws at us, but... I honestly don't see what the problems are.. leopard has been perfect for me, and considering i USED to use Panther before i got this new laptop Leopard has been a HUGe i mean HUGE step up from panther, i loved OS X panther... and now I have leopard and there isn't words for how much i love leopard.

joke all ya want, but truth is i agree. i see no need for 10.5.2 ... Im perfectly happy with 10.5.1, jeese even 10.5.0 has been good to me

I understand it's not perfect for everyone, and i understand nothing is truly perfect... im just saying my personal experiences have been perfect with the odd hiccup.

Whihc is AMAZING when compared to lets say something like Vista.

10.5.2 Server

How about a list of bug fixes for 10.5.2 Server? Obviously, the dock is not a priority for the server version. Any word on them fixing the AFP issue? I have clients that want Leopard Server for iCal Server, etc..

The Menu bar is at the top. Tell me which one is easier to read.

The only thing I want fixed is the lag that's apparent when you have the background set to change. It seems that whenever the background changes, everything is laggy (inluding the dock). It's very annoying. I have noticed this on two MBPs with the same specs (2.2 C2D, 2 gigs of RAM, 8600m GT 128 meg, 15").
