What about travel? I don't want to download movies I can only see on my laptop when I have a dvd of the same movie. I'm not gonna buy a apple tv on top of all this other hardware.

Exactly! Plus what if you have dial up or a slower internet connection? You expected download a 3 hour movie just like that? I'm sure you dont want to carry around an external drive just adds more weight and even more time at the check in line at the airport.

Dude, what dont you understand? Third time - buy the external drive. Did you and your 40 year old friends think the macbook air was a step forwards? or a step backwards?

Dude, why dont you calm down and read my post a few posts up.

you children need to understand something, and thats blu-ray is over a year old, its not going away anytime soon. you need to know that apple wont just stop doing things to please you like take over the world with no external media  they need to pretain to where the word is at this moment. and the word isnt quite ready for external media...

There were probably people saying "calm down children, SACDs aren't even a year old yet," too. My father is pretty into having the best stuff first. Bought an HDTV early, bought a DVD player fast, got the good surround sound for Jurassic Park. Same goes for broadband, got it ASAP. Couldn't care less about Blu Ray. Same thing goes for me. I don't care. I don't want it. I don't need it, which is, I'm sure, the way that most people feel. The fact of the matter is, that all the people who are buying DVDs right now are plenty happy with them. The average viewer isn't going to notice any compression artifacts. Nor do they care that much about uncompressed audio. The hardcore mentality for quality about movies that seems to surround the new formats is not going to reach the average consumer. I'm a huge music fanatic, and I couldn't make myself care about SACDs, and I'm crazy about sound quality. People will settle for good enough, and that's what DVDs and CDs have proven to be.

As a newbie i think you need to learn how these forums work. DO NOT make personal attacks unless your ready with a flame shield. Also some of the most tech savy people ive ever met are in there 50's forget 40's. Lemme guess, your a 19 year old "dude" who thinks 40 is "old"? Hate to break it to you, but 40 is barely middle age in this day and age.

Youd do well to learn to actually respect your elders.

if your such a sound buff then blu-ray is for you. as it has better sound.

pople said the same when DVD came out give it time, blu-ray will make its way to the top.

you really dont need a computer, you really dont need a dvd player. you dnt need all these fancy things. SACDS? english please!

I'm working on that here on the forums

I really love it when you guys treat apple like god and think they will take over the electronics and media indrestery.

Yes, I'm a fan of apple., but i'm not obsessed with them.

if you are on dialup - i'd say its definitely in your best interest to buy the external drive, it'll save you plenty of time - So you'll have more time to hunt for dinosaurs, saber-toothed tigers, and build fires.

As for the other dude that thought my comment regarding 40 year olds was inflammatory - that was not its intention... it seemed likely that the person i was speaking with was referring to everyone else as children. As you may have noticed, my alias is StatiK76 (the year I was born) ... making me 32.

my mistake, but it did appear that you were making an uncalled for attack on those of us who are in their 40's.

im 17 btw:eek:

my apologies.

I have verizion Fios. (AKA Fiber optic internet) but unlike yu, I think of others out there.

If your 32, then you should really tone it down and act your age. and quit telling people what to d/what to get. ;)

I too can foresee Blu-Ray, DVD and CD's going away for good.
The next storage medium is going to be Flash Based.:)

The way I see it, the next BIG media thing will be wireless to a portable storage device a with the iPod Touch concept.

...missing the point much?

Good enough is good enough. Why would I replace my entire collection for better sound? As for people saying that about DVD, I don't remember any of that. The quality jump was incredibly obvious. I mostly remember "I haven't got one yet, I'm waiting for the price to go down". The Blu Ray buzz seems to be who cares?

Sure I don't need a computer. Nor a DVD player. However, maybe you haven't been outside in a while, but our whole lives are based around an economy which produces. And in that economy, we have choices. Thus far, consumers have said no to Blu Ray. Apple isn't going to say yes to it, and they aren't going to be the company that brings it to the forefront of everything. Simply put, it's bad business. Blu Ray needs to perform before Apple takes the risk. They can afford the risk, but why? Something like a Blu Ray player would be an easy add on BTO option in the future. Apple will let Sony and the other companies take the liability. This is how Apple has gotten to where they are today. Smart business.

BTW:
for your edited comment: Super Audio Compact Discs. Not too up to scratch on your knowledge of formats and failed ones for your praises of Blu Ray.

[/QUOTE]

im not really sure how that could be confusing.

Or does it suprise you that a teenager can actual respect those older than him, and not see those at age 40 as "old"?:p

EDIT: a I see it was my use of "us". By us I meant the MR community, whom i see as equals (cept for a few trolls on here)

Still WAY too soon to get rid of optical media

MBA seems to be giving a glimpse to Apples future

It was the first to start Apples thin trend then the ipods became thin and maybe the mb and mb pro will too.

First to have the multitouch before the macbook pro

So looking at the MBA we may not have optical drives in the next mb and mb pro.

If they get rid of optical drives it will be a DISASTER for them. I realize that many of us nerds have long since started our migration from optical media but it is still a MASSIVELY UTILIZED DISTRIBUTION METHOD. There is NO WAY that apple will drop optical drives in the next year. If they do it now they are making a BIG mistake.

agreed. While we all know that optical is on its way out, theres no way apple will get rid of it this revision, and most likely not at the next. Id expect it to be gone anywhere from 4-6 years from now.

Please God Let This Be True

October 14th must be the day, it just makes sense. The more i think of it... also makes sense to merge the line 13,15,17.

Oh I REALLY hope you are right. I've been wanting a 13" MBP for a while. If they combine the two lines they will FINALLY bring discrete graphics to all of their laptops (right?). Hopefully they will find a way to accommodate different graphics cards for people with varying levels of needs for graphics performance(Or at least not hamper those who wish to have powerful mobile video editing stations.)

I don't agree with comradesnarky. I think that Blu-ray has pretty much proven itself. Sure the voracity with which it is overtaking the market is timid compared to DVD it is still gaining marketshare week after week. We're getting to the point where the price difference between a DVD player and a Blu-ray player is small enough to make people want to jump on board. Once there are blu ray players under $100.00 I think you'll see a pretty dramatic rise in market penetration (I bet we'll see those prices within a year).

Blu-ray has already "been accepted". I don't think that Apple would be going out on much of a limb if they threw in some Blu-ray drives, in fact I think they are WAY overdue. Apple is supposed to be a market leader. For them not to support Blu-ray is starting to become ridiculous.

4-6 YEARS?! Oh geeze ... i think thats way too long. You have to remember, 6 years ago we didnt even have the capability to feasibly replace a CD (capacity) with a solid state device ... I may be wrong, but in 2002 the largest memory cards we had were 256meg (and they were bloody expensive) ... the speed in which solid state is being adopted is far greater than what blue ray is being adopted by the general public.

I hope you're wrong. (not to knock you of course.... ) .. As for respecting your elders - haha ... dont sweat it. im offended you think im an elder ... take it easy! haha - later ..

LOL, last time I made my statements i said optical had 3 years and people gave me so much crap about it. That is why i extended it a good amount in this post.

I cant beleive someone actually agrees with me

I think 4-6 is too long. More like 2-4. Of course I'm no expert. Your reference to historical prices / capacity seem to indicate that we are move slightly faster than that.

Perhaps they need to slowly phase them out by having the optical drive as optional in place of something else or nothing at all.

edit:wasn't that what companies did to phase out the floppy?

I have the official scoop everyone

They are all Mac Minis and headless mini towers to accompany the new H-IPS Apple Cinema Display's

You heard it here, from me! Who got it from this guy my friend's cousin's nephew's school teacher's boyfriend's uncle heard it from.

Within the next four years, I will probably not buy a computer without an optical drive and neither will most consumers. No one burns/uses CD's anymore. It's pointless, and we got iPods and iTunes for stuff like that. Installing software, CD's are always going to be around for a decent time period, and even for old programs you have to run in Boot Camp that require a disc. All of my games do require a DVD for use as well.

If someone goes into the Apple Store and says "Where and I put in my DVD's" or "I need a drive for my games" and the Specialist responds that you can pay to rent them on iTunes or visit the App store for some fun on your iPod Touch, they may have just lost a customer.

This is my first post! Yay! Well I have this idea (and it may or may not have been said before), but I'll try to be as clear as possible to what I want to say.

I think that the Brick is a multipurpose tech hub. Things this could have could include:

VGA ports
USB ports
CD/DVD/(blueray?) drive/burner
Wifi extender
Time Capsule-like device
And various other ports

So I think apple may do away with CD drives in their laptops. They might ship with them, but I think most people don't use them that much. The Brick could be the place where you use the drive if you need it.

So with the lack of a disc drive in the laptop, having the computers the same size, they could put better/more stuff in it. Better battery life, bigger hard drive, better cooling system, etc.

Or this could just be wishful thinking on my part. I just want a new MBP. My ibook G4 is looking old. And I bought spore galactic edition (because it is limited time only) and all I have to do is buy a mac that can play it. lol I'm dying to play spore.
