Yea, I don't know if we'll see anodized aluminum MacBooks, so the need for 3 SKUs might go away, and we'll simply be left with aluminum at two separate price points (2.26/2GB/120/SD $899 and 2.4/2GB/250/SD $1099) and BTO options from there. The MBAir will probably slot in at $1499 and MBPs start at $1799.

I still see 3 SKUs for MBPs - two 15s and a 17.

No. Not buying one either.

I see.

Well, I find it far-fetched to think they'd can a product that's so promising.
It's the best combination of hardware/ Design/ OS in a laptop out there IMHO.

Of course it can use some tweaking but that's coming for sure with REV B.

I can't wait to see it.

Perhaps because there is no need to have 3 MacBooks or 3 MacBook Pros. This would help with promoting the MBA. What do you think?

I'm thinking perhaps they'll might get rid of the base model of the MacBook Pro.

Although I don't think it makes sense to start making the consumer choices smaller (even though the product line is quite large) as the company gets larger and market-share grows etc.

I think the air self-promotes tbh. Hype is a good thing!:p

I can absolutely guarantee new Mac Book Pro's will be released soon.

My work provided me with a new laptop and after a 6 month fight I finally got the new MBP this week. (I couldn't delay and hope for a new model).

So I fully expect to see new models announced while I'm still loading software on my new "old" 2.4 GHz.

Why 3 + 3? I think it is a revised MBA, 2 MacBooks and 3 MacBook Pros.
That's possible. I mentioned in another thread that the black MacBook is basically the midrange white MacBook with a bigger HD (which is available as a BTO on the white anyway). So with the MacBooks going aluminum (and most likely a unified color scheme), I can see only two models. They would be probably $300 or so apart, with major differences including the CPU (2.27/2.4 GHz) and hard drive.

The low-end MacBook will probably still have a Combo drive.

*ducks and runs*

Another possibility is that the MacBook Pro has two models, and the MacBook has three. This could mean that the MacBook moves up in the high end (*crosses fingers for higher resolution and discrete GPU*) and the MacBook Pro loses its low-end. The other outcome is that there will be two "regular" MacBooks with 1366*768, SuperDrive, etc. and one "cheap" MacBook, which, much like the $1199 iMac, goes down in features from the $1099 MacBook, such as 1280*720 and Combo Drive. In that case, I'd expect the MacBook Pro to move down slightly in the high-end.

WOOOWWW, I'm from Québec, the french part of Canada, and all I can say is: VERY RELIABLE!
I hope you're reliable! ;)

Ok, their warranties suck, but it's not the subject that keeps our attention. :D
They will when you all return all the defective Rev. A models. :p

again: the aluminium MBs will absorb the MBA market completely. the MBA is a substandard MB lacking the optical drive - once you have aluminium MBs (much flatter than the plastic ones when released), the MBA will have become obsolete.

no, there won't be price drops on the MBA - that would prevent apple from breaking even.

I agree. I don't think it's dead, but it could use some updates. I think the MB and MBP are more overdue than the MBA though...

The MBA, to me, is not something I'd consider buying. It doesn't fit my needs at all, but I can see the appeal. It's light and ultraportable, plus a good-sized screen. It's a very nice machine, but not something I'm looking to buy. I'm just worried it's hindering the MB from getting lighter, just like the MBP hinders the MB from getting better specs. Also, the MB hinders the MBA from getting better specs. Apple needs to rethink their line a bit.

Yeah when the entire mac range is sporting blu ray the entry level macbook will still have a combo drive because not everyone needs the latest and greatest :p

Too much choice is not a good thing: look at Dell and Sony, it is simply ridiculous.

True, the base 15" MBP could do but then again same could be said for the top MB.

Your laptop is looking forward to being euthanized? My 12" 867Mhz powerbook is still going strong and hates the fact that I'm thinking of replacing her!

Mine too, which is why I never say anything in front of her. But I think she's starting to wonder why I spend so much time on the new-macbook-pro-related threads on Macrumors. And I know she's noticed me looking extra longingly at the Macbook Pro page on Apple.com.

I guess we're just kidding ourselves if we think the magic is still there. We still have fun, though. Sigh.

Not everyone wants/ needs an optical drive on their laptop. Just saying. The MBA isn't going anywhere.

It's a pretty good bet that this is MBs and MBPs which is sort of unfortunate. I don't think the laptops are suffering from a lack of updates the way the rest of the line-up is, most of which has been ignored outright (hello Mini and Cinema displays) or given halfhearted updates that seemed like afterthoughts (hello iMacs and MPs.)

I'd love it if the rumors were true that Apple was going to simplify the laptop line-up and make 3 or 4 models with no differentiation between consumer and pro. That would leave 2 other slots for something more interesting, perhaps an expansion of the Mini into "high end" models. But I doubt it.

So I'm predicting MB/MBP updated to look more like the Air with a few token spec bumps, no price drops and a possible elimination of the matte screen option.

Wake me when it's over.

Right on except the processors on macbooks, i think 2.26 standard and 2.5 or .6 option with the macbook pro spec bumpzors

Yeah. Even more likely they might get rid of one of the macbooks if they go aluminum too.
The powerbooks used to be perfect, one model of each: 12", 15" and 17"
Although a 12" today would just eat into the Air's sales.

I understand. One should indeed buy the computer which fits best the needs/ budget for it and let others have their own.

And if they merge, I bet the resulting "MacBook" will be more like the MacBook than the MacBook Pro.

Maybe they should shrink the air to maybe 12 inch or have a smaller footprint, i mean it has no optical drive so why not get the most out of the portability angle and make it smaller.
