Could this "placeholder" imply new shipments of an existing product, or is it about something definitely new?

...an Apple doesn't offer any financing options on its computers. Ho well, if you need financing, you're probably buying well above your means anyway.

futureshop is the kind of store you go to when you don't know anything about computers...

http://www.futureshop.ca

it's the same exact thing like best buy but different colors... canadian colors! ( canada is usa, just don't tease them with the facts, they get fierce )

anyways... yes they are reliable for a source... it's just... you don't step in that place unless you are 40+ and your small kid asked for a computer, once he receives it, he whines about the celeron and gateway/e-machine brand ;]

It pretty much definitely means new sku's since the inventory database (at least for best buy) only keeps one sku for each product through its life cycle, so...

new sku's = new products :)

And I think you can be fairly sure that Future Shop does things the same way as BB and other retailers.

How about a Blu-Ray drive at least as a BTO option? It's getting kind of embarrassing now. What shall we call it? SuperDrive Extreme? SuperDrive Blu?

BluDrive?

I don't really care about blu-ray. What I need is fresh Air...

Since it doesn't hold the physical place, only a virtual one for the abstract idea that's the model of laptop, I'd say definitely new ;).

next tuesday 30th Sep!

what is the Product Transition this quarter? where is the margin drop to 30%

In one day how many new macbooks apple can sell?

profits accounted for this or next quarter if the sell on 30th sep and ship it on october?

new mac with out apple event? more questions than answers!!!

White aluminum and black aluminum?

1 air, 2 mb, 3 mbp.

I think having a revised air is needed. Either replace current or have two models? It has a niche. Sony just released their carbon fiber, sub 3 pound. I think thin, light, portable will be a continuing trend.

You have the macbook pros for the go anywhere A/V jocks. Macbooks for everyone else, and the air for the elitists.

Definitely 3 MB's and 3 MBP's. No Air, because they wouldn't redesign a product which isn't even one year old.

Macbook
13 inch
13 inch
15 inch

MacBook Pro
15 inch
15 inch
17 inch

That would be more realistic, wouldn't it?

But I am wondering what the tech specs could be... Anyone? Hope the lowest MacBook gets standard 2 GB of memory.

The last 2 are guesses, but the first 4 seem likely, to me:

SKU#1 The MB line will be simplified due to the dropping of the color difference and universal adoption of superdrives. One 13" model ~$1000, more or less.

SKU#2 The air will get a minor bump in speed to deal with complaints and a minor price drop to fit in between the MB and MBPRO.

SKU#'s3&4 A 15" and 17" MBPRO.

SKU#5 The "Brick". I suspect a home server to replace the Mini (and maybe even the appleTV) and add functionality to...

SKU#6 A ~$500-600 netbook. A stripped down 9" laptop with almost nothing but a microphone port, WiFi, and 8GB flash. Light and portable, but stripped of enough extras to not be a head-to-head competitor for the Air. Really dependent on the "Brick" for serious storage, optical drive, USB and FW, but capable of surfing and basic computing tasks on the road.

maybe with the "placeholder" deal in the inventory... they already have macbook and MBP spots still in the inventory, they are just updated and redesigned... maybe the 6 spots actually mean 2 new products with the common 3 different price/performance levels.....but i'm just rambling i completley think its just the MB & MBP revamps.

I think the product transition was supposed to be the cheaper nanos (4/8GB for 129/149) but because of the 16GB zune causing Apple to put out the 16GB nano, and removing the low margin 4GB 129 nano, its not an issue anymore.

SKU = unique identifier for a product, so they scan the barcode and then know what object to charge you for.

I'm thinking:

1. MBA gets a small HD bump, maybe a processor bump. Nothing big.

2. MB gets a new design, faster processors ( + maybe bigger HDs + more RAM ). Maybe a small price drop?

3. MBP redesign, speed bumps and small HD increases.

(one MBA, down to two base MBs, and three MBPs.)

Here's hoping the event comes soon!

ding ding, we have a winner! This makes the most sense. MBP fully HD ( screen, blu-ray, etc. )

I think this is the correct analysis. The MB and MBP have historically had 3 base models available for sale for the past few revisions.
