Pricing for 3.33x6 upgrade from base quad core?

I can't find anything that lists prices for the various processor upgrades. Options are in a popup window at http://www.apple.com/macpro/specs.html, but no prices (and if you follow the link to configure at the Apple Store, you only get the old models).

I'm thinking the sweet spot for price/performance for me might be the 3.33x6 single processor ... assuming it's a bit less pricey than the base octo. But I don't see any prices yet.

Well as the three Xeon 3000 processors have the same list price as the three previous ones you can expect to be paying $1,200 for that upgrade. Maybe more, maybe less, but I'd guess in the $1000-$1400 range.

Well shoot, glad that wait is over.

You know what: I'm underwhelmed. I think I'm gonna stick with my 2010 MBP and use the money on a new camera and maybe one of those new Mini's as a home server/secondary computer (much more efficient than spending the same money on a second processor).

I am glad they are still supporting DVI monitors. I'm sure that was a hard call for Apple, which tries so hard to throw out older standards. Good call Apple.

A 6 core plus extra ram, plus a 5870 plus a SSD. Could be looking at a $6k box.

Pretty much what a lot of us expected I guess.
Feel a bit left out in the cold here in the UK, we don't even get 'Coming August' just coming soon. And no indication of 12 core price, just 4 and 8.

Had a guestimate of the UK prices. My current 8 core cost £2,798.00 its $3599.00 The Current 3.33 Quad with 8Gb ram and ATI card is £3288.99 or $4149.00. Therefor its a factor of roughly 1.27 dollars to pounds.

So:

Quad-core starting at $2499 / 1.27 = £1967. UK site says: Quad-core starting at £1999.

8-core starting at $3499 / 1.27 = £2755. UK site says: 8-core starting at £2799.

12-core starting at $4999 / 1.27 = £3936 so £3999 then?

Do we know what the std RAM spec is, still 6GB for the 8 core?

At $600 for the 256GB model, yeah I'd think so.

I don't think 256 is large enough for the main drive. I hate to start farming apps onto a different drive to conserve space. These SSD prices really need to start falling.

The Aussie prices seem a bit... what the?

Quad @ $3499 ('09 @ $3599)
Octo @ $4799 ('09 @ $4899)
12 @ $4899

Mistake or something? Hope not.. cause there would be no reason to buy a 12 core system then!

Holy crap those are expensive computer. My hackintosh cost me < 1,000 and while my i7-930 isn't a XEON processor, I didn't spend 2,500.

For that price I was hoping for more of an improvement in features, i.e., e-sata, usb 3.0, more drive bays. My sub-grand hackintosh has these.

I don't see apple moving too many of the 12 core models, not at 5,000 but then those are probably more geared to those specialized users that are willing to spend big bugs for a 12 core beast.

Would it really have killed Apple to put a couple more usb ports on the back? Seriously, 3?

Thanks for that, expected by someone with a Google Android avatar on a Mac site. Always have to stir up drama, do you really think we care about your "Hackintosh" and how much you spent?

not as disapointing as the 09 update, but still not the big bang i hoped for. 3gb ram, no usb 3, pricing (especially for europe)... :(

In Germany they've put up the already horrendous value Quad Core another €100. Oh well. At least more 2008s should wing their way onto eBay as their AppleCares expire.

Yeah it seems like the 2008 Mac Pro was (and still is) the best bang for the buck machine so far.

I think their resale value just went up even more.

Graphics cards

Here's hoping the new Radeons will be available separately, and that they'll work in Mac Pro 1,1.

Only the 5870 seems lame specially when the 6000 series are coming out in the next 2 months.

Yea, I have to agree here. At least we could expect the 5970. I guess the 5870 is the only one AMD has that supports DisplayPort - The stupid standard Apple decided to bet on just to try to fool everyone that is superior anything else on the planet.

In a normal world gfx card decision is easy - Just get the cheapest card included and get the best card from your closest PC store friend, well. Not if your buying a mac... There you have to stick with whatever you get and keep it for 3 years or more until you get a new mac.. No drivers, not even proper PCI support.

//Still running my 2006 Mac Pro and its feels like sitting in a 1971 Plymouth Duster 340.....

I guess you could start building hackintosh'es in your garage and just take a ride to hollywood and connives them that they are stupid if they use macpro's for rendering those 1B USD movies... Good luck!
