I was thinking maybe I don't even need an upgrade right now. My PPC dual 2.0 is still working.. albeit not as quickly as would an Intel box. Then I thought, I could get a cheap PC to play some games on to tide me over. I can wait for Nehalem! Why not?!

I feel a lot better. If it comes out tomorrow I'll jump on it, sure, but I think the fever has finally abated. How many people waiting eagerly for these are 100% out of debt, I wonder, statistically. Sure I understand "needing" MPs for professional applications, but how many of us pro's that need them aren't just upgrading already competent machines.

Then again this all goes out the window the moment the store goes down.

I'm not eagerly awaiting the upgrade to buy one. But I am looking forward to see what Apple can do with this new set of chips. I am completely debt free. No mortgage, no car payments (Just paid cash for a 2007 Honda Civic for the wife), what I make, I put in the bank, investments, etc. I often wonder exactly what your question states, how much debt all these 'wishers' are going to put themselves in to buy whatever Super Mac Pro Apple comes up with. I've read most of the arguments for not buying and I totally understand/agree.

But as I sit at my MP watching it crunch databases and blow through my variable data/direct mail solutions, making money every minute, I read all these threads here and on other websites about these guys and girls waiting for the next Mac Pro and video card and I can't help but chuckle. If your bank opened it's safe and said, "come on in and get a free $5,000", are you going to wait to see if they offer $10,000? I don't think so. My bottom line is this: if you really have serious work to do, and it's going to make you money, buy what you need to get the job done today. Otherwise, you're just playing around...or spending money on something you can't really afford.

How do you know what we can or can not afford?
Do you know me? I am 61 and retired.
I run around in a totally paid for 2004 Lexus GX470.

Good for you. ;) No need to get upset. I was only responding to a statement earlier in the thread. So, if you're retired, what would you do with a new Mac Pro? Not trying to be crass, just a question.

I've been buying the best Mac computers since 1990, mostly towers.
Now I am being told (by some people on this forum) that the Mac Pro is a workstation computer; therefore, I really should not be using it.

A majority of people on this forum like to argue for the sake of it. I don't get why people get their panties in a bunch of what computer a person buys. They all run the same OS so what's the issue? None. That's the problem.

EDIT: Oh and the OP was 100% alright, 100% wrong.

Yes he's wrong but his/her source just gave another possible guess for all of us to be crazy about/ or not.

I'm 42 and it looks like we've got a little bit in common. I use:

Filemaker Pro
InDesign / XM Pie
Illustrator
MS Excel
Parallels

Aperture
Photoshop
iWeb

X-Plane (Absolutely love flying my P-38J)

Quickbooks and many others.

We seem to be in the same boat. I wasn't trying to upset anyone, just wondering.

Are you responsible for my junk mail?

Not to worry - no one in here will confuse you as a person with vision or ambition beyond your bank account.

I'm sure a lot of us in the MacPro forums are in the same boat. I'm 24 and I'm using Final Cut Studio 1, all the Adobe programs, some Pinnacle Apps, and any other production programs I am missing. Running all that crap on a G4 right now too. It's so painful. At my work we got the MacPros, but still. Can't wait to get my own, hopefully tomorrow, that way I can put my FCS2 on there. :)

Oh, and I am dying to play X-Plane. Can't wait for that too!

Ooh, dodgy territory, other people's finances :)

Personally, I'll be debt free once my 48 month agreements run out around May 2008. Never again. It's not like I couldn't manage (I've kept up every payment, with plenty left over for day to day spending) but if you analyse the absolute *total* amount you pay, you'll often find it's close to double the original price. Who wants to pay £3000+ for a £1700 Mac Pro, that's just insane!!

Two exceptions: car, house. When I decide to get them, and only because it'd take 3 years to save up for a car and 30 years to save up for a house. Other than that, no more debt for me thank you very much, I'll be saving up for my Mac Pro and other goodies! (Sure, I do want one eventually.)

Would a Mac Pro be necessary for me? Hell no. How many people make private purchases because they're "necessary"? Ask anyone whether their iPod is necessary. Or just about any female whether it's necessary to have 100 pairs of shoes. (The answer will be a resounding "Yes" but let's not go there).

Nah, usually we buy things for ourselves because we desire them. Sure, I could get away just fine with a 5 year old computer running Windows (*gag*) but given that I'm a massive "power user" who is always sat at the thing, I'd go for the most powerful and enjoyable machine I can justify. Right now it's the iMac (bought with cash) but I can easily see myself upgrading to a Mac Pro in the future.

That said, I'm betting most purchasers (with the exception of geeks, i.e. people on this forum including myself) are buying for business. Whether that's within a company, or if they're buying individually but going to make money out of it. Likely graphic designers etc.

I would say if you USE aperture alone, its worth having a Mac Pro...

I have a very new 24" iMac (as many options as possible) that gags on Aperture... Now, this is partly because I am working with very large RAW files (Canon 5D), but more because my graphics card sucks and I cannot upgrade. As you know Aperture relies heavily on the GPU... If you are using Aperture with jpgs from your powershot, it will work fine on the iMac.

I am able to do 80-90% what I need too on the iMac, which includes Final Cut Pro and Photoshop / Flash (although the performance of the wholes CS3 suite is another story for another thread).

Unless you have gobs of money laying around, its hard to justify the MacPro's total expense (tower, upgrades, monitor), unless it is a business tool...

I sat down and calculated the time I lost waiting on my iMac... it was somewhere between 10-20 mins a day. This may not sound like a lot, but add it up in a month... it could be upwards of 10 hours! Without divulging my hourly rates, that could mean a lot of cash.

my 2 cents

I'm holding out for a Tuesday announcement... usually Apple announces those the Thursday before, so here's hoping.

If no announcement by this week, then all hope seems lost till January.

I agree about Aperature.
I also work with high definition video editing using 10-bit uncompressed codecs.
Very, very cpu intensive.
Those can take forever to render.
