How is your new Mac Pro running?

Yes, but the general consensus is this bump up in speed isn't going to change things significantly.

If it gets published that it does have to be matched pairs in quads and quads have to be the same manufacturer, I'll add 2x2GB OWC more, take out the stock 2x1GB and sell them to OWC to use against a future Ram upgrade.

........ :(

I think you are missing the point. There is a difference in the way the memory Dimms come shipped from Apple in the pre-2008 as opposed to the early 2008 Mac Pro models.

1..Pre-2008 Mac Pros--the 2 Dimms are in Riser A, slots 1 and 2
2..Early 2008 Mac Pros- one Dimm in Riser A, slot 1, and one Dimm in Riser B, slot 1. Early 2008 dimms do not come shipped in matched pairs on the same riser.

Anybody care to explain the difference?

This is actually my biggest issue with Apple over the last few years. We have 2 stores in Austin, both with pretty heinous parking situations, and here I am with a dolly going through a freaking mall with my gigantic computer. And they don't even help me get it back out.

And don't get me started on genius bar appointments. "Genius". Ugh.

I love my computers but damn their service situations!

I think its assonine that Apple would force someone to bring their Mac Pro into the store to replace an optical drive, especially when that user is willing and capable of installing an optical drive him/herself. If I were in that situation I would have made a genius appointment, and then showed up at the appointed time with my Mac Pro receipt in one hand and the optical drive in the other. ;)

Regarding with sleep/restart problems, I have a feeling that it might have to do with the graphics card. I have a PC that freezes or restarts upon waking up. But don't take my word for it. I'm still waiting for my Mac pro with the Nvidia card.

Anyone else having significant problems? I've been reading more and more complaints about the early 2008 MPs.

My replacement is da bomb. Geekbench scores are off the chart, spanks my previous version 2.66 and my returned single cpu 2.8. This thing is smooth as butter. :D

The only other problem I'm having (and it's not a *huge* issue, but I'd really rather do it this way....) is that for some reason when I launch Garageband and I have any MIDI devices connected (that includes my Line6 Toneport (using Gearbox software as a software-based amp for my guitar) or if I have my new M-Audio keyboard plugged in, Garageband slows to a crawl...on MY machine, no less (I had a thread about it in the Audio section, but not many replies...)

Ableton Live actually works without a hitch, but there's 2 major things I don't like about it....

1. It's a LOT more complicated to use than Garageband, and
2. Garageband offers a LOT more of the MIDI sounds that I'm looking for when I use the keyboard.

I looked online, and it appears that other people are using Toneports with Garageband just fine...I just can't figure out what's wrong. I tried calling Applecare, but that was before I ever figured out why the program was running slowly, and all they did was have me reinstall it...*sigh*

Mac Pro Problems

I have been having problems with the computer freezing. The mouse can move around but all the programs are frozen. Had to do a force boot.
This is starting to be a big pain. I have like most others been waiting for this Pro for a long time, went with the standard graphic card because I could not wait for another 5 to 6 weeks. You would think a $5,000 plus computer would work, maybe I should have waited for another year.

What hard drive option did you get btw? The stock 320 or did you upgrade?

midi loop?

The only other problem I'm having (and it's not a *huge* issue, but I'd really rather do it this way....) is that for some reason when I launch Garageband and I have any MIDI devices connected (that includes my Line6 Toneport (using Gearbox software as a software-based amp for my guitar) or if I have my new M-Audio keyboard plugged in, Garageband slows to a crawl...

You may have thought of this already, but are you sure you don't have a midi loop going? This will bring any software to it's knees.

Nope, I'm actually pretty new to using MIDI to record on the computer, so I wouldn't have any idea how to check for that.

Basically what I've noticed are a few things...

• Depending which USB port (back or front) my Toneport guitar MIDI controller is plugged into, Garageband may be quick at the opening screen....otherwise it's slow as hell when you actually go create a project or use magic garageband.

My old M-Audio keyboard (49e, plugged in the front) didn't cause Garageband any grief, but now my new M-Audio (same exact type of connection...USB cable, also sending MIDI signal) 61es makes Garageband go slow too.

None of these things happen with Ableton Live Lite 6.0, but again, I think it's a lot harder to use for the basic stuff I'll be using my equipment for, and I don't get nearly as many instrument choices either.

One other thing (maybe other Mac Pro users can check this for me) - When Applecare had me reinstall GB from that 2nd install DVD, the GB choice was greyed out along with one or two others (I think iMovie or iDVD), so the only way to actually select it was to select all then unselect the stuff you don't want. Can some others check if that's the case on their DVDs too? If mine is different, maybe my copy of GB is messed up....

Thanks!

Record a few notes in a midi track, check the track to see if you have duplicate notes. If your midi is looping you'll see doubles or more of the same note.

Good luck.

Got mine last week, only small problem was that it shipped with 667mhz ram instead or 800mhz, They said a couple went out that way, & are sending the correct 800mhz ram tuesday. Was also missing the 2nd Optical drive & Airport card, They are sending those also.
Machine is fine with the slower ram, no lockups or anything like that.

New Mac Pro Chokes on Sound Track Pro

I've been using STP for over two years. I've always thought it was a bit buggy, and I generally make an effort to close other programs while using it and not to give it too many (e.g., more than one) command at a time. Used with caution on my old G5 it worked pretty well. I was doing my first edit of an audio file tonight on my new Mac Pro and had several freezing issues. In one, the screen started flickering like crazy -- something I've never seen before. Otherwise a couple other freezes were just what's typically reported: the mouse can move around but nothing works and the machine requires rebooting.

I think the problem may be an exaggeration of an existing STP instability, and my guess is that if I'm even more careful to let the machine process each command fully before moving to the next that it'll be OK. At least, once I started following that protocol I didn't have any more problems, but that doesn't necessarily mean anything.

Still, this is a pretty poor evaluation of what should be a professional bit of software on a professional machine.

Otherwise my new Mac Pro (2.8, 10 Gigs of ram) seems to work fine. And it's plenty speedy!

At this point with approx 20% of people reporting problems, I think I'll wait another couple of weeks and purchase a refurb when they are available and hopefully they will be perfect units. That and I can get the dual quad instead of a single quad. Well, maybe....

22% seems "unacceptably" high for problem machines, doesn't it?

Is there any history of polls like this for the first gen Mac Pro, G5, G4, G3?

i'd just like to reiterate that this isn't any sort of scientific/accurate sampling of MP owners for a variety of reasons....(those that have models that are working fine are less likely to post on forums, etc)

i'm sure that the number of machines w/ problems aren't actually 20%...

having said that, mine is occasionally having the sleep issue, and as someone in a prior post in this thread asked, does anyone have any ideas as to rather this is a hardware or 10.5.1 issue?

i 'spose i should just call apple and see what they say...

The computers been great. But the keyboard died within 24 hours.. Went to the Apple store and they gave me a replacement

Anybody else want to chime in on this non-scientific but interesting poll...?
I wonder how many 8800 MPs are having problems.

Just a quick update, the problem I was having with Garageband (4.1.1) is because this version of GB is incompatible with the Bose Companion 5 speaker system I have. They say downgrading to 4.0 would fix it, but my computer came with GB 4.1.1 preinstalled.

So once Apple provides another GB update, I'll be all set!
