The RAM is built inside the Apple Silicon M1 chip. There is no RAM expansion as there is no eternal RAM outside the M1 Chip. Should make for much faster RAM access speeds. You either order a Mac Mini with 8GB or 16GB of RAM inside the M1 Chip.
What does that have to do with the size of applications and the amount of RAM they may need? Now I may have missed this, but did Apple just make Mac OS take up one third the RAM, and every third party piece of software also do the same for its footprint and for the content it uses and creates?

If that didn’t happen then being limited to 16GB of RAM especially if the intergrated GPU is going to share that is a problem for certain situations which was not a limiting factor before.

Same RAM options as before for the base models. You can still get more RAM with more expensive, non-AS models.

I think we need to take the performance with a grain of salt. While on paper this looks good, it is a still a long road for ARM powered Laptops. Once we get the software behind it fully then we can see the full potential of what is happening here.

While I am excited, i'm also very cautious. I'll save my reservations once we get some real world data.

A few weeks ago, few expected to see any AS until next year. Now people are upset that there's some available sooner, but it's not the highest-end stuff. That will likely still come next year as expected.
Far from true, Apple themselves confirmed they would start by the end of this year.
Not the point. They have started from very basic and removed 2 ports from the mini (one example), and the Pro even if it's replacing the "basic 2 port, single fan" 13inch, 2 ports on a new Pro machine is ridiculous. Not to mention whatever drawback they have with limiting the RAM on all models to 16GB where they would almost certainly have more options using their own SoC for RAM. It's an artificial limitation.
I said on another comment that it's basically saying our own new product is not as good as the Intel product they are wanting it to replace

I have an early 2015 13 at the moment. The trade in value is a little over $300. I'm sure I could get more if I sold it locally....maybe....

Bottom line is that I really don't need it just to say I own Apple Silicon.

And yet after no announcement in October few still expected it.

You can still get the Mini with four ports, just not yet with AS that way.

You'd have to explain why it's ridiculous to replace a 2-port base model 13" with a 2-port base model. They sell a lot of those base models to people who use them for professional purposes.

Only the AS models are limited to 16GB RAM, also true of the former base 13". Only you could know why you think the chips that would accept more RAM are ready now but just being artificially held back.

No, it's not like they're saying their product isn't as good as Intel. It's like they're saying the opposite, but you aren't listening.

Exactly, they finally went up to a 64GB limit in the 2018 model and now it’s back down to 16GB limit. Seems like they are trying to push people to wait for the AS iMac when that arrives.

I have no idea why you keep on mentioning the non Apple Silicon models, this thread is about the new Apple Silicon machines and looking forward, and at least in terms of the Mac mini this is a step backwards.

The point is that you can still get more RAM if you need it, including for the Mini. The new, cheaper AS Mini isn't supposed to replace the higher-RAM options. It's cheaper for a reason. Looking forward you can expect AS that will accommodate more RAM too, naturally.

Again with the talking about the older model, that is a mute point. No one who needs the extra RAM but doesn’t have the money for a Mac Pro or even a iMac or has a space issue or other reason for a small machine wants to have to pick between the last gen 2 year old model with less performance but with more RAM or the brand new model with a lot more performance but limited to 16GB of RAM, that’s a crap situation. It’s either a technology limitation that they couldn’t fix in time or it’s a artificial limitation to make people pay more, or cost and they couldn’t hit the numbers they wanted, whatever the reason it’s a downgrade and that sucks.

Yes, still talking about it because it's still available, if you really need a Mini with more RAM. No one will make you choose between those options, if neither suits you, though. For you it will be like this update didn't happen, and you'll have to wait. Others will find the new cheaper, faster, more limited Mini just what they wanted.

I wonder how that will work when playing a youtube video. An iPhone and iPad can play a Youtube video with no fan but many computers start spinning their fans at max RPM once you start playing a video which is quite mind boggling..
Yeah it will be interesting to see the reviews. I wonder if there also might be an option to turn the fan off on the MBP.

iPads can actually take a surprising amount of beating. I can't count the number of accidental drops and dings my iPad Air 2 and iPad mini 4 have seen. They are, after all, designed for a wide variety of age groups, and that includes small kids.

I've seen enough broken screens to not give it a try with my iPad, but I do trust your word.
I just won't give a drop check :)

Yeah but who’d want to pay apples up charges for what 32gb ram or more would cost with an entry level chip. At same time I wouldn’t buy a mini with intel either.

For the situation right now with software headaches I’m good with 600 something for base model. This isn’t something I’m looking to max out or future protect but just want to have access to AS and see how it goes.

Indeed, we don't want to drop our devices...

You're also correct about the displays. They aren't shatterproof. All we seem to know is that "arsenic-free display glass" is used. Some people have speculated that Gorilla Glass is used, but apparently that's not something that Apple advertises, either.

A lot of bickering here. Might be wise to realize these releases are the coffee shop line of computers for Apple (even with a Pro moniker on one). Most of you will need to wait for the $2000 machines to be happy (happier?). These are low end.

They also represent over 90% of all macs sold in last 12 months. Just these entry level devices. Not bad choices to start with to start the transition.
