So what about this Rosetta 2 deal?

If it’s anything like Rosetta 1, I’m thinking I hate it already :D

(meanwhile I just came from the Apple online store, btw. So I now have a dog in this fight, so to speak :) )

Does anyone know (yet) if you'll be to run Windows on M1 machines?
Yes, and the answer is no. Maybe someone will come up with a pure software-based emulation option... But it probably won't be very useful; you couldn't use it for gaming and if you wanted Office, there's a decent port native to Mac.

How does everyone feel about SoC being the standard for Pro machines, aside from claims of performance increase?

Wow, can’t believe they switched from expensive Intel chips to their own ARM chips and kept the price the same. The profit margin on these must be insane, even for Apple.
yes and no. They probably have pumped over a billion over the years into developing the M1. While that's currently sunk cost, that still should factor into their build costs

Fanless is pretty good. It's one of my favorite features of the 12" Macbook.
And one of my least. It was a thermal design failure which fried my logicboard, taking the soldered SSD with it to the grave.

Hopefully the power efficiency of the new chip means that won’t be an issue.

I just bought one. Let's see how it fares....disappointed that they didn't do the redesign, but it makes sense: COVID-19 severely delayed their plans.

Here is my takeaway on COVID-19's impact on Apple's products this year overall:
  • no ProMotion (120 Hz or High refresh rate) displays on the "Pro" model iPhones
  • no redesign on the AS Macs that were announced today
  • no 1080p cameras on the AS MacBooks because these laptops were already in the pipeline when COVID-19 hit, so they just couldn't disassemble the chassis, put in the new webcam and call it a day....they have to reengineer their entire chassis and I'm sure this is going to be the focus next year...BET ON IT!
Thoughts?

Ahh so the 12 inch MacBook returns with it's lack of fan... and a 13 inch screen... and a new name 😂
Not really. The biggest draw of the 12" Macbook was the small size and weight, this 13" Air is still the same size, shape and weight as the previous Air. It's exactly what it says on the tin, a successor to the previous MacBook Air, with Silicone and fanless design.

Sadly, this is true. However, for me at least, the lack of moving parts was very desirable. I can wait for the 12”, or similar to return, while in the meantime rough it with this. :D

It might hold me over. We shall see. I did think the previous Air wasn’t a particularly strong offering, although it was a big hit I think.

So the rumors of the 12-inch MacBook with ARM were all wrong? We’re not getting that?
My thoughts exactly, although I never thought that the rumours had any merit, it just didn't make sense for them to re-introduce the 12" at the exact same time as updating their current lineup to Silicone (although I was hoping that they would).

I'm still using a 2017 12" Macbook, and now I'm torn. The power of Silicone is really appealing, but it's still the 13" size and weight. I was really hoping that it would at least be a lower weight, such as 1.1kg, which I might be able to accept as a compromise. But can I sell my beloved 0.92kg machine for this?

Wondering whether to "move on", or hope that they bring out a <1kg machine next year?

18 Hour Battery Life ✔️
Improved Web Cam ✔️
Fanless ✔️
Magic Keyboard ✔️

As long as this laptop doesn't burn off my leg hair, I'm in. ✔️

I'm at that very crossroad, whether to move on from my 2017 12" Macbook, or hold out until next year in the hopes that they bring back a <1kg laptop.

I bought it. No worries. It would have been just a matter of time, as I was waiting for this, and expected it. I would have preferred the 12”, but that’s pie in the sky now.

You just might be waiting years. Absolutely no reason to think it will come back soon. Look at what happened to the 17”.

depressing :D

Just ordered a 16GB Air after hearing that it has the same screen as the Pro except less bright. Curious to see if it's an improvement over my 8GB early 2020 Pro. Worse comes to worse, it gets returned. Looks like a great machine.

There was never going to be a redesign. From reading these boards, they didn’t redesign during the last transition, so I took it as a given this time (and it was shown to be so).

No 1080p cameras... not sure, I need to check to see if there’s a physical limitation. The lid of a MacBook is thinner than an iPhone, so expecting an iPhone front camera (or worse, back camera bulge on the front) wasn’t going to happen. However, how thin are the competition’s lids? :)

For sure. I've just got the feeling though that next year will be the bezel year, where the 13" Air morphs into the shell (or thereabouts) of the 12" but with smaller bezels, so 13" screen in a < 1.1kg body. And the 13" Pro will fulfil its destiny and expand into the 14" Pro. Which will give a nice, clean lineup:

13" Macbook Air < 1.1kg
14" MacBook Pro 1.4kg
16" MacBook Pro 2.0kg

And each Macbook by that point will have clear, clean differences in size, weight, screen size, performance and price. Could be wrong, but that's my thinking.

I am quietly hoping for 12" and 14" Macbook (call it Air, SE, Max Pro Plus Lite Twentieth Anniversary Classic Edition, I don't care, I want a 14" screen + taper) next year.

What's there to hate? The first Rosetta ran great. PowerPC apps on Intel at decent speed. I'm running it now on Snow Leopard on a MacBook Pro 2010 for a couple of old apps. My guess that Rosetta 2 will be very fast Intel emulation.

Really? We shall see I guess. I will have mine next week. Should be interesting (to say the least) :D

But I must say that when Craig smiled that big grin and said “And all your favorite Intel apps can run on the NEW Rosetta 2!” I cringed a little. :D

Now they put it on my iPad and I will salute them! :apple:
