You can virtualize some versions of Linux but there's no x86 extension on the chip, so Windows is not an option.I didn't hear anything about virtualization... Is it in there?

I hope you were kidding with that comment.I'm going to miss the Fan : Now we won't know if the Mac is working hard or not.
I was surprised by that as well. I imagine Apple’s R&D cost for the M1 is big. I guess they will make up for it with other skews.Wow, can’t believe they switched from expensive Intel chips to their own ARM chips and kept the price the same. The profit margin on these must be insane, even for Apple.
Yes, and the answer is no. Maybe someone will come up with a pure software-based emulation option... But it probably won't be very useful; you couldn't use it for gaming and if you wanted Office, there's a decent port native to Mac.Does anyone know (yet) if you'll be to run Windows on M1 machines?
No fan! Awesome
yes and no. They probably have pumped over a billion over the years into developing the M1. While that's currently sunk cost, that still should factor into their build costsWow, can’t believe they switched from expensive Intel chips to their own ARM chips and kept the price the same. And one of my least. It was a thermal design failure which fried my logicboard, taking the soldered SSD with it to the grave.Fanless is pretty good. It's one of my favorite features of the 12" Macbook.
Not really. The biggest draw of the 12" Macbook was the small size and weight, this 13" Air is still the same size, shape and weight as the previous Air. It's exactly what it says on the tin, a successor to the previous MacBook Air, with Silicone and fanless design.Ahh so the 12 inch MacBook returns with it's lack of fan... and a 13 inch screen... and a new name 😂
Get the Pro, then.No fan no sale
Jk
Sadly, this is true. However, for me at least, the lack of moving parts was very desirable. I can wait for the 12”, or similar to return, while in the meantime rough it with this. Not really. My thoughts exactly, although I never thought that the rumours had any merit, it just didn't make sense for them to re-introduce the 12" at the exact same time as updating their current lineup to Silicone (although I was hoping that they would). So the rumors of the 12-inch MacBook with ARM were all wrong? We’re not getting that?
I'm at that very crossroad, whether to move on from my 2017 12" Macbook, or hold out until next year in the hopes that they bring back a <1kg laptop.Sadly, this is true. It might hold me over.
I bought it. No worries. It would have been just a matter of time, as I was waiting for this, and expected it. I would have preferred the 12”, but that’s pie in the sky now.I'm at that very crossroad, whether to move on from my 2017 12" Macbook, or hold out until next year in the hopes that they bring back a <1kg laptop.
There was never going to be a redesign. From reading these boards, they didn’t redesign during the last transition, so I took it as a given this time (and it was shown to be so).
- no redesign on the AS Macs that were announced today
- no 1080p cameras on the AS MacBooks because these laptops were already in the pipeline when COVID-19 hit, so they just couldn't disassemble the chassis, put in the new webcam and call it a day....they have to reengineer their entire chassis and I'm sure this is going to be the focus next year...BET ON IT!
For sure. I've just got the feeling though that next year will be the bezel year, where the 13" Air morphs into the shell (or thereabouts) of the 12" but with smaller bezels, so 13" screen in a < 1.1kg body. And the 13" Pro will fulfil its destiny and expand into the 14" Pro. Which will give a nice, clean lineup:I bought it. No worries. You just might be waiting years. Absolutely no reason to think it will come back soon. Look at the 17”.

What's there to hate? The first Rosetta ran great. PowerPC apps on Intel at decent speed. I'm running it now on Snow Leopard on a MacBook Pro 2010 for a couple of old apps. My guess that Rosetta 2 will be very fast Intel emulation. So what about this Rosetta 2 deal?
If it’s anything like Rosetta 1, I’m thinking I hate it already
(meanwhile I just came from the Apple online store, btw. So I now have a dog in this fight, so to speak)
