The right way to look at the 11.6" macbook air is in comparison to the ipad. If looked at it that way, the new 11.6" air is definitely a great device.

If compared to the ultraportable market, it's missing quite a few things, starting with battery life. As I suspected, using it in the store, at full brightness, just surfing, one can expect about 3 hours of battery life.

This is absolutely in line with other Apple laptops in which one should multiply the claimed battery life by about 0.6

$1000 for 3 hours of battery life is not going to cut it for me. But for $500 it would. It's not clear to me that per pound, the macbook air ekes out more minutes than the competition.

i am going to sell my ipad tomorrow from launch day, found a guy i will sell my 32 wifi with applecare to for 485.00 recoup some of the damage.

i thought about doing this but i realize i use the ipad for games and just browsing on the go without having to pull out a laptop, so for me it worked out.

So much for "ships within 24hrs"...ordered my 11.6 base stock Friday around 5:30 pm and it's status is still "not yet shipped"...anybody else?

What's added in 10.6.5?

Ps: if you order the MBA the shipping is "within 24 hours" if you get the 4GB version changes to "1-3 businness days".

I ordered mine the morning after the announcement around 10AM and its not shipped yet. I guess within Tuesday it probably will. Est delivery 29th-1st.

Same as me... Slightly disappointed :(

Local Apple store didn't have any available to play with/ check out the difference in real estate until after Lunchtime Thursday, and even yesterday were not prominent in store.

(11.6" / 128GB / 4GB)

I went to Regent the day of after the announcement and they didn't have any, then I went to my university and ordered there with 14% discount.

While it arrives I have to get rid of my MacBook which luckyly a friend of mine is buying it off me, and I have to sell my iPad as well. I need money, I spent a lot in iToys these months.

Just noticed something else when the battery gets near 2.00 hours takes forever to lose battery.

No, it will be love at first sight.

If I ever get to see it-lol!
Just got off the phone with Apple and they agreed to upgrade the shipping free of charge since it should have shipped out already. The customer service rep said that it's scheduled to ship out tomorrow from within the US, not China, and should be delivered Weds...sure hope so!
Just curious how many here are shipping, or have shipped, from the US...? I noticed when I placed the order that there was the option to ship overnight which normally isn't offered when it's coming from China.

So Pathetic

ordered a maxed out 13inch air about an hour after the keynote and i keep checking like every 4 hours to see if it has shipped.

Purchased online in Singapore, was given a timeframe of 2 weeks. But still, cant help myself from checking. I never usually get excited about tech, but for some reason, waiting for apple tech gets me all impatient! Really jealous about the folks who've already got their custom macbook air.

Ive had so many cool gadgets delivered and sometimes even waited a week or so to open the dang things, but with apple products im just knawing fist just waiting for it to come.

On a side note, the 256G flash upgrade is impressive and cheap compared to usual SSD upgrades.. 256G equals 4x64G chips on the flash drive card. Im willing to bet that the next iphone will definitely come with an option of 64G. Would be awesome.

On a side note,, never understood why people dont max out their products.. yes its more expensive, But you have already decided to buy an apple product so your all clearly prepared to pay a premium, so why not go the whole hog?.. It would always be at the back of my mind that i had the change to get 4G ram, larger HD but i didnt..

Because many people actually value and know quality vs. need vs. money. I buy Apple products because I like the quality, and I know that's going to cost me. But I look at what I'm going to do with the machine and I also look at what I can add myself. With the MBA, I maxed mine out because of what I will use it for and the fact that I can't do it after I purchase.

But why the heck would I max out a Mac Pro of RAM, SSD drives with RAID 0, etc. if I'm not doing video editing or an iMac if I'm buying it for my kids?

I'm willing to spend if it makes sense, but I'm not going to throw money away just because I'm buying an Apple product.

Spot-on! And the funny part is so many people order the base model, and say "I have the money to order more, but this is all I need" ...

Funny how human nature works.... those same people are the ones complaining when Apple does a quiet refresh and drops the lowest model making their model obsolete after 3 months.

If you're buying a computer, you may as well either delay your buying cycle to get a better hardware config... from both usability and resale points of view you're better off.

I too love Apple some thing i max out others i keep stock, for me 64K storage is enough but 2G of ram was not.

Talk about falling for marketing hype! You've been convinced you should spend as much as you possibly can maxing out a computer just because you're buying a new computer. You're going to max out a Mac Pro or an iMac not know if you're going to even come close to taking advantage of the power?

You are definitely an ideal Apple customer!

The route it normally does is, it goes from China to Hong Kong, Hong Kong to Alaska, Alaska to Memphis, Memphis to a place close by you, then closer, and then on van for delivery. And it needs to clear customs in Anchorage.

The last Apple Computer I ordered I placed it at 5PM on Thursday, It shipped from Hong Kong at 6:30 PM, made that whole trip and was on my doorstep in Fort Lauderdale Florida at 5PM the next day.

I was amazed with that... I did not know it was possible. must have been a fluke... I'm still waiting on my BTO 4GB 11.6 to ship :(

You should really read what I say and not read into it what you want to see. I never said max it out. Buying a computer in 2010\2011 with 2GB of Ram and 64GB of Drive Storage is not a wise investment. That was out-dated back in 2009, and you're putting money into that config now?

There are very few people who would disagree that 4GB is the standard for current computing needs (no matter how basic). The mere fact that an iPhone holds 32 GB and the sync would wipe half your drive alone, is evidence of that.

I never stated to max out a config. But I'm simply stating that by always buying entry model in computers, you'll always be one generation behind in the model you own. So if you go with a mid-line, you may have the "low end offering" in 6 months, but you'll at least still have a current model and not be obsolete.

Yeah I ordered a iMac BTO and it shipped in 1-3 days just like it said. My MB Air didn't ship yet and it's passed the 1-3 days. I guess I should have realized it's a pre-order, not a built-to-order. Oh well, this one didn't have the option to buy in-store so I just have to wait it out :-(

Now that's a fair statement. We agree on something! :) You said 'spot on' to the other poster who's first statement was that he was surprised that people don't just max out their machines, so I did do a bit of assuming on your statement.

Yes, people do need to evaluate their needs and thing a little ahead of the game rather than getting excited and just buying the basic thing. Kind of like the upgrade price on memory of an iOS device. But some also will never fill the space so don't spend for it. Of course, this is what keeps the 2nd hand market going! :)
