Rather than this weak update, how about an update to the Mac Mini?

I'm sure there are some Apple fans who'll spin this as such an innovative forward-thinking update but it's about as weak as it can get...must be something else getting upgraded that they haven't noticed yet (hoping).

Don't like the rMBP13?

I'd love one, but then I love my MBA. Price was the dividing aspect. When I got it the 13" rMBP was still its higher price, and for a university student well, thats a deciding factor!
I'm not planning on buying a rMBA, just excited to see it is all!

Throw a quad core in the 13" and I'd buy it instantly. When I have the money...

The Mid-2012 MacBook Pro Retina got a minor spec bump just like this in Early-2013 before Apple introduced the newer models with Intel Haswell, Thunderbolt 2 etc a few months later.

A few monthr later is the key. Intel release a new architecture almost any year, and an upgrade of that (usually some hunderd of ghz and maybe some more cache) about six month after that. Apple, as any other pc maker, usually release an update when a new architecture comes out and another when the architecture get the bump. It's how it's always been, if you buy a middle cycle release you can't be surprised the next one will come after six months and be major…this is for people that don't have a macbook air or need one now, that's to say 99% of computer buyers.

It's the usual mid cycle computer update that follows the Intel mid cycle CPU update, it always happen, always has happened in the computer industry. Intel release a new architecture, after six month give it a little bump, then another major one, it cyclical. What the alternative would be? Not upgrading at all to avoid an insignificant minority of niche forum readers to bitch about a thing so mundane? I think computers are made to be bought and used not to be talked about in forums, at least it's definitely the primary reason they exist.

Having just received my mid-2013 Macbook Air from Apple this past Friday, I don't see myself returning it to get the new one. But at least I had the option.

Exactly.

Though I can wish for the moon, at the very least I want to see a cpu bump with HD5000 or Iris, and AC1300 built-in. Don't have a good way to hardwire Gigabit in my new place, so I'm really looking for AC1300 to get close to as close to wire gigabit speeds as possible.
It's just so outdated I can get a PC 2 as powerful for £200 less - I get apple tax but this is how outdated it is

if it is just an incremental processor update with no ram/storage increases, i'll just pick up a refurb 2013. don't really need retina for something that will be ultra-portable. interested more in the weight and battery life. retina will probably set back both of those things.

DID YOU NOTICE THE NEW CATEGORIES!!!!!!

it's stuff like this you know wouldn't happen with Steve Jobs alive.

YES FOLKS THE NEW CATEGORIES WE WILL GET THIS YEAR IS A BUMP FROM 1.3 1.4 HASEWELL AND NEW CHEAP iMacs in June...

Aaaarghhhhhhhhh!

It isnt unheard of that Apple gets first access to advanced Intel parts. They've done it before and even done it with Toshiba's 1.8-inch HDD.

It's a production change, and not really an update at all. Intel has stopped production of the 1.3GHz in favor of the 1.4GHz, and so Apple is switching to it as the new base processor. They did this in early 2013, 5 months after the original rMBP was released. It probably won't even get a mention (or maybe the online store website will have a "New" or "Updated" badge for a few weeks, but that's it.

Don't like the rMBP13?

The following words were "all jokes aside".

There's a lot of terrible sarcasm going on in this thread that no ones picking up on.

I've decided that you can't possibly be serious.

Their first product update of 2014! What a joke.

No Touch screen again: Oh well Apple saves me money again. Will see if the iPad pro has a key board and track pad. Will wait and see, doubt that will ever happen either.

If Surface 3 get a 4:3 screen I am so there.

Trick question? It's a spec bump. What's wrong with that?
It just isn't a bump. That's what's wrong with it. All the specs stay the same, only the release date gets updated. Unless they change something with the pricing scheme, this is virtually the same offer as before. So I'll take the production issue explanation over it's just a minor spec bump. Because it isn't.

Apple does minor spec bumps for multiple reasons. I listed two possible ones.

1) Current supplies are strained
2) Cost of supplies reduced, allowing for Apple to provide better components while maintaining the same price for the consumer

Not the way apple works. They don't give what customers want, they force you up the food chain to get what you want. Max power in a 13"? Certainly not, you have to start $500 higher to even think about power.

Was thinking more wishing for it/in 4 years, but yeah I've noticed within reason.

I understand the difference is very very minor, but if you could spare half an hour of your time if might be worth it in the future. You would simply have to go in and do an exchange without much hassle, you are within the return period

Isn't Apple at the mercy of Intel's processor roadmap? I wonder when/if Apple will start making its own desktop/laptop processors?

Yep currently they are at the mercy of Intel. I'm sure the A7 can run a laptop or desktop. I'm sure a even more refined A8 or A9 will most likely make their way to the MacBook airs.

The Whiners are Out in Full Force

If you don't like this upgrade don't buy it. Wait until an Air to your liking is released.
