I hope I get paid for this. :p

First of all, Apple Daily is a Hong Kong newspaper, though it's quoting reports from Taiwan sources...

Apple Daily also has a Taiwanese version. They kind of look alike (standard corporate designs), so it can be confusing at times.

I can see 1900x1200 on a 17", though I still think that's the highest usable resolution with the way OS X currently operates. But 1900x1200 on a 15"? That just won't happen with this update, or for a long time.

Any just why not? As I said, there are many 15" laptop screens with 1900x1200 resolution. For those of us with great eyes - with a hankering for getting the most out of our screen-real-estate, the current res offered is a pitiful shortfall which has needed fixing for years.

That just won't happen with this update, or for a long time. The most you could expect now is 1680x1050 on a 15". And I'd be surprised if Apple does that with this update.

This reminds me of something. There was a time a couple of years ago when cell phones in Japan had become so small (because it was technically feasable and "cool" to have the smallest cell phone) that they became hard to use because the peoples hands and fingers didnt become smaller. Eventually the newer cell phones became a tad biger again.
While it may be feasable to put a full HD screen in a 13 or 15inch monitor, our human eyes can only see so much. And Apple knows that!

Given that the 17" MacBook Pro has 1920x1200, there's no DPI reason why the 15" can't have 1680x1050 and the 13" can't have 1440x900.

Why not give an option for those who want the extra resolution, like what the 17" MBP used to have? Maybe even have the default resolution as a higher one and give a lower one as BTO.

Didn't they just release a new Macbook last October?

are you effin' mothertruckin' serious? What am I supposed to say? I just want to fart on people like you

I salute macbook pros and order them to fire at will on iPads.

"Our human eyes can only see so much, and Apple knows that?" Total BS.

The Dell Studio15 has optional 1080P (1900x1200) resolution. Take a look at how smooth the text is, how much information you can fit into one window. My eyesight is razor sharp, why should I be penalized by your poor eyesight?

We're splitting hairs, but the point is that other laptop manufacturers are producing 15" laptop displays with 1900x1200 resolution - so should Apple, especially for a so-called "pro" machine. Working with Photoshop and Final Cut Pro on a daily basis, the higher resolution would be a dream come true.

This rumor better be true!

I really hope this rumor is true! I've been waiting for this damn update for months now. I can't take it anymore. :(

Well, even thought they are MacBook "Pros" Apple does focus on the mainstream user. The removal of the express card slot in exchange for an SD card slot is evidence of that. So do you really thing Apple is going to make a 15" 1920x1200 MBP? It's just not going to happen.

Again, what is your reasoning for this? Other non-pro manufacturers like Dell have a 1080P display in their wares, Apple should as well. Anyone who works in pro media knows the benefits to having a high-res display. Apple needs to keep up with its competitors and up the specs to (at a bare minimum) meet what Dell is producing. The same can be applied to the internal optical drives - they're slow and antiquated.

I think you are exactly right. The removal of the ExpressCard slot was a huge statement.

I think Apple has shown that it considers the 17" MBP as the real pro production laptop due to the express card slot and screen resolution. The 15" is treated more like a mainstream laptop.

I'm not saying they shouldn't do it. I think for all the reasons you stated they should make a higher resolution 15" MBP as a custom order. I just think their track record on the 13" and 15" MBP speaks for itself which is why they won't.

...they should make a higher resolution 15" MBP as a custom order.
This is all we ask for. I really, really don't want to have to sacrifice the portability of a 15" package for a higher res screen, when I could have both.

Is it just me or is a 248GB SSD seem a little fishy? I was aware that SSD sizes were based on powers of 8. Shouldn't it be 256GB? or do they mean formatted capacity?

Not really - multiples of 8 often, but not powers. Look at Newegg's lineup:

Capacity
  • 8GB power of 8
  • 16GB factor of 8
  • 24GB factor of 8
  • 30GB neither
  • 32GB factor of 8
  • 40GB neither
  • 48GB factor of 8
  • 60GB neither
  • 64GB power of 8
  • 80GB factor of 8
  • 100GB neither
  • 120GB factor of 8
  • 128GB factor of 8
  • 160GB factor of 8
  • 200GB factor of 8
  • 250GB neither
  • 256GB factor of 8
  • 500GB neither
  • 512GB power of 8
  • 1TB factor of 8

Note that, like other storage, SSDs use the international standard definitions of GB - the Intel 160 GB disk is 160,041,885,696 bytes, or 149.1 GiB.

The "binary gigabyte", or "GiB" is what is often and incorrectly called "formatted capacity". 149.1 GiB is the same size as 160 GB - the only issue with "formatting" is how the OS decides to display the number.

And, by the way, doesn't Apple OSX 10.6 display a 160 GB disk as 160 GB, not 149 GiB?

another month, another rumor...

this headline is getting suspiciously familiar: "New MacBook, MacBook Pro, and MacBook Air Models Scheduled for Launch This Month?"

i wonder if the macrumors guys have a cron set up to generate a macbook pro refresh post at the beginning of each month until it comes out...

i mean, eventually the rumor will become true and then all of the rumor generators will say, "see? we told you so!"

Patience

They are busy porting the iPhone OS to the MacBooks. Once that is done, you no longer will need to worry about where you should go to buy software, you no longer will need to worry about which peripherals you want to attach to it and so on so forth :p

Developers can rejoice too - all their apps can now be sold on the laptops with just a recompile! (0.99$ iPhone/iPod, $10 iPad and $39.99 Laptop version)

Yay! Revolutionary computing!

Ok - I am just pissed off that a) We have no choice of i5 MBP in Apr 2010 and b) OS X is stagnating - 10.6.3 has not fixed any existing bugs for me but has brought new ones (PPTP VPN refuses to disconnect/reconnect) and then I still don't have TRIM support. How bad is that given SSDs with TRIM firmware are common now a days?

Yeah, my 250 GB drive is "249.72 GB."

Yep - 0.28 GB (280 MB) is reasonable overhead due to formatting - roughly a tenth of a percent.

250 GB is reported in binary GB as 232.8 GiB, which leads people to incorrectly believe that they lost 17 GB to formatting.

Similarly, a Seagate 1TB disk of mine is 1,000,204,861,952 bytes. Windows incorrectly reports this as 931.51 GiB, making it look like I lost 68 GB to "formatting". In truth, the usable space on the formatted volume is 1000.202 GB - about 3 MB were "lost" to formatting.

Since the laptop fanboys always spam the Macpro rumor threads with spam about notebooks, I'd like to take this opportunity to say:

MAC PRO UPDATE PLEASE. There has been exactly ONE update in the last 27 months. Gimme a break.

Haha, YES! I totally agree. Of course, all the products need an update, but it hasn't even been a year for the MacBook Pros and people are complaining. It has been well over a year since the last Mac Pro update.
